Kalyves and Almyrida
About 25 minutes southeast of Chania lie the two coastal towns of Kalyves (brown sand beach) and Almyrida (gray sand-and-gravel beach). These Cretan vacation spots offer affordable stays, and except during the height of summer, things here are still quite laid-back. There are plenty of cafés and restaurants to stop at near the beach.
Although the hinterland of both towns is already heavily dotted with vacation villas, there are hardly any large hotel complexes here. We personally really liked the atmosphere in Kalyves, with its crystal-clear river in the village center and the beautiful sandy beach offering views of the Akrotiri Peninsula.

Chersonisou (also known as Hersonissos or Chersonissos) has become the driving force behind international tourism in Crete in recent years. The town consists of an upper and lower village. The latter, Limenas Chersonisou, has transformed from an unassuming fishing village into a bustling small town with many bars and souvenir shops.
