On Greece’s largest island, choosing among the many vacation spots in Crete is often a difficult decision. First-time visitors to Greece, in particular, often ask themselves: Where exactly in Crete should I go? North or south, and where are the most beautiful beachfront resorts?

The northern coast of Crete, in particular, has enjoyed immense popularity for decades. From Chania in the west to Sitia in the east, countless resorts await sun-seeking vacationers.

Where to go in Crete?

Crete has something to offer for every taste. The regions around Chania and Rethymnon in the west are particularly popular. There are also many hotels near the capital, Heraklion, in the north. In the east, Elounda attracts visitors with its luxurious beach hotels, and Agios Nikolaos with its Côte d’Azur flair. All-inclusive fans will find the best vacation spots in Crete in Malia, Chersonissos, or Georgioupolis.

The south of Crete is still considered a quiet destination. If you’re not a fan of large hotel complexes and all-inclusive resorts, you’ll find cozy Cretan vacation spots away from the crowds between Paleochora and Myrtos in the south, as well as in the west near Kissamos and in the east near Sitia.

Crete seaside resorts for individualists:

  • Paleochora
  • Agia Galini
  • Plakias
  • Matala and Kalamaki
  • Lentas
  • Myrtos
  • Panormos
  • Kissamos
  • Sitia and Mochlos

Thanks to Crete’s two airports—Heraklion (HER) in the center and Chania (CHQ) in the west—transfer times to most vacation destinations are reasonable. Only for eastern Crete do you need to plan for longer travel times to your hotel. Tips for affordable flights can be found in our article: Flights to Greece

Chania, as the administrative center of the Western Crete region and its surrounding settlements, has become the most popular vacation destination on Crete in recent years. For city lovers, Chania offers everything the heart desires, from picturesque old town streets to fine restaurants and trendy bars, to great shopping opportunities.

Hotels in Chania City

Some of Crete’s best hotels are located in the old town of Chania. Some of these are centuries-old Venetian villas that have been meticulously restored, offering a unique—albeit somewhat expensive—way to stay in Crete within their elegant rooms.

Cretan Renaissance

A new 5-star hotel featuring a restaurant and exceptionally designed rooms right on the Venetian harbor, complete with a stunning view of the city. You can find great deals on Booking.com*:

➲ Book the Cretan Renaissance*

Casa Delfino Hotel

A sophisticated 4-star hotel with stylish rooms and suites, some with views of the Venetian harbor. Excellent breakfast and friendly staff. Great deals and booking on Booking.com*:

Daratsos and Galatas

The coastal towns of Kato Daratsos and Kato Galatas are located immediately west of Chania’s new town and are particularly popular with vacationers for their beautiful Cretan beaches with golden-brown sand (including Agii Apostoli and Glaros). Just one kilometer inland lie the old villages with their traditional taverns.

Agia Marina Resort

Just 5 km further west of Kato Daratsos lies the resort of Agia Marina. Numerous Crete hotels and vacation resorts have sprung up along the sandy beach of the same name, interspersed with many restaurants and beach bars. Sun loungers stand side by side, offering views of the uninhabited islet of Agii Theodori.

→ Recommended hotels in Agia Marina on Booking.com*: The Theodore Boutique Hotel*, Vergina Beach Hotel*

Platanias Resort

To the west, Platanias borders Agia Marina, though the golden sandy beach gives way to a gray beach of sand and gravel. The long stretch of coastline consists solely of a row of hotels, resorts, and restaurants. Only the old village of Pano Platanias, built on a rocky outcrop, offers a touch of Greek charm.

→ Recommended hotels in Platanias on Booking.com*: Athina Suites Platanias*, Minoa Palace Resort & Spa (Check24)*

Kalyves and Almyrida

About 25 minutes southeast of Chania lie the two coastal towns of Kalyves (brown sand beach) and Almyrida (gray sand-and-gravel beach). These Cretan vacation spots offer affordable stays, and except during the height of summer, things here are still quite laid-back. There are plenty of cafés and restaurants to stop at near the beach.

Almyrida Kreta Ferienorte Urlaub Griechenland

Although the hinterland of both towns is already heavily dotted with vacation villas, there are hardly any large hotel complexes here. We personally really liked the atmosphere in Kalyves, with its crystal-clear river in the village center and the beautiful sandy beach offering views of the Akrotiri Peninsula.

Chersonisou (also known as Hersonissos or Chersonissos) has become the driving force behind international tourism in Crete in recent years. The town consists of an upper and lower village. The latter, Limenas Chersonisou, has transformed from an unassuming fishing village into a bustling small town with many bars and souvenir shops.

Hersonissos is geared toward mass tourism; those seeking peace and relaxation are in the wrong place here. Some of the buildings have been built up to four stories high, and the narrow stretch of beach is packed with umbrellas. Only the old harbor, including the Ag. Paraskevi Church, and the upper village of Ano Hersonissos still exude a certain charm. Click on the GetYourGuide* link to view guided tours departing from Hersonissos:

Hotels in Chersonisou (Hersonissos)

From Anissaras in the north of Chersonisos to just before the resort town of Stalida, there is a suitable hotel for virtually every vacation budget. The focus is undoubtedly on package tours, and many all-inclusive resorts have also settled here. The town proper, including its traffic-calmed waterfront promenade, begins at the port of Chersonissos.

💡 Vacation Alternatives to Hersonissos: If you don’t mind being a bit further from the beach, we highly recommend the villages of Ano Hersonissos, Piskopiano, and Koutouloufari. The latter two, in particular, aren’t too crowded yet and offer trendy cafés and quaint taverns. On Booking.com*, you’ll also find lovely vacation rentals and cozy hotels away from the hustle and bustle by the sea.

Along with Chania, Rethymno is one of the most scenic places in Crete thanks to its charming old town and historic harbor. The long stretch of light-sand coastline to the east has made settlements like Perivolia, Adelianos, and Kampos some of the most popular vacation spots in Crete.

The Cretan resort towns of Stalida and Malia are located east of Limenas Chersonisou. Tourism has existed in the region since the 1960s. The reason for this is the fine sandy beach, which is unfortunately now littered with countless umbrellas. In the summer, the Stalida waterfront promenade and Dimokratias Street in Malia turn into veritable party districts. Those seeking peace and quiet should choose a hotel on the outskirts of town.

FAQs about Crete Holiday Destinations

Which resort in Crete is the best?

It depends on your preferences: Chania for culture and city vibes, Georgioupoli for families with its golden sandy beach, and Rethymno for the mix of old town and beach. We love Chania and the surrounding towns of Kalyves and Almyrida—the perfect combination of relaxation, authenticity, and good infrastructure!

Where should you stay for your first time in Crete?

The Chania region is ideal: short transfer times from the airport, gorgeous beaches, and the best starting point for exploring western Crete. Affordable hotels in the hinterland start at just €50 per night during the off-season. Rethymno is more centrally located for all of Crete, but a bit further from the airports. Elounda or Agios Nikolaos are recommended if you’re looking for luxury, wellness, and turquoise-blue bays, though the journey takes over an hour!

Which hotels in Crete are recommended?

Our favorite hotels are: Cretan Renaissance (5-star, Chania, Venetian harbor), Rimondi Boutique Hotel (Rethymno, Old Town, Venetian style), Mythos Palace Resort (Georgioupoli, kid-friendly), and Happy Cretan Suites (Agia Pelagia, stunning sea views). During the off-season, you can save up to 40% in Crete. So it’s worth being flexible when traveling to Crete.

Is Crete good for families with children?

Absolutely yes! Georgioupoli, Almyrida, Stegna, and Agathi Beach are particularly child-friendly, with shallow sandy beaches, calm waters, and family-run taverns. Our hotel recommendations: the Mythos Palace Resort in Georgioupoli or the Grecotel Creta Palace in Platanes.

Where in Crete is it less touristy?

Southern Crete is authentic: Paleochora, Plakias, Matala, Myrtos, and Lentas—hardly any large hotels, but plenty of local taverns and cheerful locals. In the east, Sitia and Mochlos offer a peaceful retreat. In the west lies Kissamos, a small town for individualists and those seeking tranquility who want to experience the real Greece.

Which resort in Crete has the most beautiful beaches?

The Chania region stands out with Balos, Elafonisi, and the Akrotiri beaches. Georgioupoli boasts a kilometer-long golden sandy beach. Elounda delights with turquoise-blue lagoons. For natural beaches, we recommend the south near Paleochora and Matala. The regions with the most beautiful beaches are definitely Georgioupoli and the Chania coast!

Do you need a car in Crete?

Yes, absolutely! Crete is huge, and the most beautiful beaches, mountain villages, and sights are located away from the tourist resorts. While bus connections are available, they aren’t always reliable. With a rental car, you’ll have flexibility and can discover hidden coves and gorges like the Samariá Gorge, as well as authentic taverns. Starting at €30 per day on Check24, Billiger-Mietwagen & Co.

When is the best time to visit Crete?

May/June and September/October are perfect: temperatures are pleasant (23–28 °C), there are fewer tourists, and hotel prices are lower. July and August get really hot (up to 40 °C), and places like Hersonissos, Malia, or Elounda are completely overcrowded. April and November are great for hiking and cultural excursions, though many hotels are closed.
