Yes, together with Santorini, Mykonos has the highest prices of all the Greek islands. A salad here easily costs 15 euros, tzatziki 9 or 10 euros, roughly double what you'd pay on other Cycladic islands. Restaurants in Chora are the most expensive, it gets cheaper in Ano Mera or in tavernas away from the tourist centres. If you want to save money, travel in the shoulder season and eat outside Mykonos Town.

Chora impresses with white houses with colourful wooden balconies, the Little Venice district with its iconic houses right on the water, and the six windmills that serve as a landmark at the edge of the village. The vibrant nightlife also makes Mykonos unique, along with idyllic beaches like Paradise Beach and its proximity to the ancient island of Delos. Mykonos is Greece's party island with an international jet-set flair, but also extremely crowded.

That depends on your taste. Santorini has the spectacular caldera with Oia and Fira, more dramatic and romantic. Mykonos has more picturesque lanes, better beaches and more nightlife. Santorini is more photogenic for weddings and honeymoons, Mykonos is livelier for partying. Both islands are completely packed and expensive in summer, ideally you visit both and plan a bit more time for Santorini.

Absolutely. Mykonos is the epitome of mass tourism in Greece. Even in May there's already plenty of hustle and bustle, with crowded lanes and daily traffic chaos around Chora. In July and August the island bursts at the seams with cruise ship tourists. For lovers of authentic Greece, Mykonos in high summer is best avoided.

Two to three days are enough for the main sights like Chora, Little Venice, the windmills and Delos. With beaches, Ano Mera, the wineries and the north included, four to five days are ideal, especially in the shoulder season. In high summer, four days can feel stressful because of the crowds, but for party people three to four days are just right.

April/May and October are ideal: fewer tourists, cheaper hotel prices and pleasant temperatures between 23 and 28°C. July and August are high season, when the small island gets extremely crowded, expensive and at times stressful for sightseeing.

Our top 3 are the calm, unspoiled Agios Sostis Beach, the long, turquoise Elia Beach, which also has a nudist area, and the picturesque, relaxed Agia Anna Beach in the south. Paradise Beach is Mykonos' party strip and, in our opinion, extremely overrated. Fokos Beach and Panormos are also lovely and far less crowded.

A rental car or scooter is ideal for exploring secluded beaches and the inland areas. Chora itself is pedestrianised and best explored on foot. Buses run regularly to the larger towns and popular beaches, but for the north and more remote corners you'll definitely need your own vehicle.
