Kalimera & Welcome to our Greece blog
We’re glad you’re here – and with you on our very personal heart project. We are Thomas & Elisabeth (Tom & Ella for short), travel journalists, authors, parents, dropouts with a return ticket – and above all, two people with one great love: Greece.
Our shared story began in 2009 – and even then, our first trip together took us to the island of Kos. We stepped off the plane, felt the warm sea air, smelled salt, pine, and thyme – and knew immediately: Here we have arrived. In a country that felt familiar from the very beginning.
Since then, Greece has captivated us. We have already traveled to over 50 islands – from popular classics to small, almost untouched islets where life still sways to the leisurely rhythm of the waves. Every time the plane lands or our Suzuki crosses the border, it feels a bit like coming home.
From an office job to a trip around the world – and on to Greece
We both originally come from the Leipzig and Dresden area, studied business administration together, and then worked for many years in southwest Germany between Karlsruhe and Heilbronn – Ella in purchasing and marketing, Tom in logistics. The jobs were solid and well-paid, life structured – but at some point, it felt like our inner compass was pointing in a new direction.
At the beginning of 2017, the time had come: We both quit our jobs, sold almost everything we owned, and went on a trip around the world. Half a year across South America, Australia, Asia, and New Zealand – full of impressions, changes in perspective, and encounters – but most of all, we were drawn back to Greece.
Back in Germany, it was clear: We wanted to reorient our lives – and do what truly fulfills us. Travel. Write. Photograph. Tell stories. And all this about a country we love.
Greece Moments – our declaration of love for Greece
Since the beginning of 2018, we have been working independently as travel journalists and bloggers, members of the German Association of Specialist Journalists, authors of six self-published travel guides, and authors of the ADAC Travel Guide Kos from Gräfe und Unzer Verlag.
In 2019, our Greece blog, Greece Moments, was created out of love, passion, and the desire to share this special attitude to life with others. What began as a small project is now our professional home: With over 300,000 readers a month, we are thrilled by the many people who share their enthusiasm for Greece with us.
Our daughter has been joining us on our research trips for several years now – and loves the country just as much as we do: the sea, the cats, the food, and the warmth of the (very child-loving!) people.
What you’ll find here
Greece Moments is not a classic information site, but an invitation to experience Greece with us – honest, personal, and full of emotion. We’ll take you to unknown islands, to quaint taverns, along dusty donkey paths, and through fragrant orange groves. You’ll find authentic travel reports, practical tips, island-hopping routes, mainland highlights, personal recommendations we’ve tested ourselves, and above all: inspiration.
And the best part? Our journey is far from over.
You may have already read about us in…
In addition to our blog and our books, our journalistic articles have also appeared in, among others:
We welcome every message, every comment, and every constructive feedback. Your stories, tips, or questions bring this blog to life.
So: Come with us on a journey through the blue and white paradise, get a taste of Greek joie de vivre – and who knows, maybe we’ll see each other on one of the islands. With a cool freddo by the sea. In a cozy taverna with a glass of wine. Or on one of the many monopati between thyme bushes and maquis.
