Kalimera & Welcome to our Greece blog

We’re glad you’re here, and glad to have you along on a project that means the world to us. We are Thomas & Elisabeth (Tom & Ella for short), travel journalists, authors, parents, two people who walked away from the nine-to-five with a return ticket in their pocket, and above all two people with one great love: Greece.

Our shared story began in 2009, and even that very first trip together took us to the island of Kos. We stepped off the plane, felt the warm sea air, breathed in salt, pine and thyme, and knew straight away: this is where we belong. In a country that felt familiar from the very first moment.

Greece hasn’t let go of us since. We’ve travelled to more than 50 islands by now, from the popular classics to tiny, almost untouched islets where life still sways to the leisurely rhythm of the waves. Every time the plane touches down or our Suzuki crosses the border, it feels a little like coming home.

From an office job to a trip around the world and on to Greece

We both originally come from the Leipzig and Dresden area in Germany, studied business administration together and then spent many years working in south-west Germany between Karlsruhe and Heilbronn, Ella in purchasing and marketing, Tom in logistics. The jobs were solid and well paid, life was structured, but at some point it felt as though our inner compass was pointing somewhere else entirely.

In early 2017 we finally did it. We both handed in our notice, sold almost everything we owned and set off around the world. Half a year across South America, Australia, Asia and New Zealand, full of impressions, encounters and moments that shifted how we saw things. But most of all, we were drawn back to Greece.

Back in Germany one thing was clear: we wanted to rebuild our lives around what actually fulfils us. Travel. Write. Photograph. Tell stories. And all of it about a country we love.

Greece Moments, our declaration of love for Greece

Since the beginning of 2018 we have been working freelance as travel journalists and bloggers, members of the German Association of Professional Journalists, authors of six self-published travel guides and authors of the ADAC Travel Guide Kos, published by Gräfe und Unzer.

In 2019 our Greece blog Greece Moments was born out of love, passion and the wish to share that feeling with other people. What started as a small side project is now our professional home. With over 300,000 readers a month, we’re constantly amazed by how many people share our love for Greece.

Our daughter has been coming along on our research trips for several years now, and she loves the country every bit as much as we do: the sea, the cats, the food and the warmth of the (very child-friendly!) people.
