Reader reviews of our Crete travel guide

“Thank you so much for this great travel guide! I received the e-book a few days before it was published, as my vacation was already in the starting blocks. Now we are in Crete and we are absolutely thrilled with the e-book. Beautiful photos, detailed descriptions of the tours, and great tips for restaurants and cafés. You've done a really great job. Best wishes from Kissamos, Maria”

"Hello Tom & Ella, we returned from Crete at the end of last week and I would like to give you some brief feedback. Purchasing your e-book was really worthwhile for us. We did the tours you suggested (some with modifications) and also did Tour 10 (Apokoronas region). And of course we went to Chania (several times). In our opinion, the e-book is very well put together and took almost all of the work out of planning our trips. This allowed us to concentrate fully on “doing” in this case. So, thank you again, and we will definitely recommend the e-book if anyone in our family, circle of friends, or acquaintances is planning a vacation in (western) Crete."

"Hello from Austria! We are back from our vacation in western Crete and are still totally impressed by this beautiful part of Crete. We had already seen a lot of Crete during our three previous stays, and western Crete was the only part we hadn't visited yet. With the help of your book and the suggested tours, it was easy for us to master the individual stages and get to know this part of Crete. It was wonderful! Every single day trip was a highlight. Your detailed and very well-researched descriptions were a great help to us. Everything was accurate, whether it was the total length, walking time, duration of the tour, or the sights. Thank you very much for the lovingly compiled book. We will definitely recommend it to others and will certainly download the corresponding book for our Milos/Sifnos/Serifos trip. Efcharisto and Yassu!"

FAQ Travel Guide Crete

Important questions and answers about the Crete Guide

Do I absolutely need a rental car for the Crete tours?

With the exception of a few tours (including the Chania walking tour), a rental car is required for almost all of the day trips described. A car is necessary to reach the more remote parts of the island. More information on rental cars and traffic can be found here: Rental cars in Greece

Are maps included in the Crete travel guide?

For each excursion, there is a rough overview map showing the individual stops and larger towns. To ensure reliable navigation for your day trip, we have created maps for you using Google Maps, which you can access via a link or QR code.

Can I get everywhere in Crete with a rental car?

The main roads on Crete are paved and therefore easily navigable. The trip to Balos partly involves driving on gravel roads, for which an off-road vehicle is recommended. Relevant information can be found in the respective chapter.

Are the most important sights included in the Crete travel guide?

All of the important sights in western Crete have been included in the travel guide. These include the administrative capital of Chania, the lagoons of Balos and Elafonisi, the Samaria Gorge, and coastal towns worth visiting such as Paleochora, Loutro, and Frangokastello.

Is Crete easy to explore by rental car?

With a few exceptions, the roads on Crete are in moderate condition. The multi-lane island highway is the fastest connection from east to west and is therefore very busy. On side roads, however, you will usually encounter only a few other vehicles. Nevertheless, you should always drive with foresight in order to recognize potential hazards (e.g., goats on the road) in good time.

How much money should I budget for the Crete tours?

Many of the day trips take you to beautiful places and wild nature and are therefore free of charge. Some historical sites charge a small entrance fee. Admission prices and opening hours are noted in the respective chapters.

Can I also do the Crete tours by bus?

Although the bus network in Crete is relatively well developed, apart from Tour #1 (Chania), it is not possible to take any other tours by bus, as the individual connections are not flexible enough. It is therefore advisable to rent a car, even if it is only for a few days of your vacation.

Do I also need a regular travel guide for Crete?

Our travel guide for Western Crete is not a complete replacement for a comprehensive travel guide. It takes care of your trip planning and provides basic information about the island from A to Z. In the Lonely Planet travel guide about Crete, you will find further helpful information about history, and the country and its people.

Can I do the tours in the Crete travel guide with kids?

All day trips are also suitable for children. Of course, the individual fitness level of the kids must be taken into account. However, we do not recommend the hikes to the larger island mountains for children under 12 years of age.

Are there also tours that can be done in bad weather?

Crete is located in the sun-drenched southern Aegean Sea, where it hardly rains from May to September. In case of bad weather, you can visit the museums, wineries, breweries, and olive oil producers described in the travel guide.

When will the Crete travel guide be available as a printed book?

A printed version of our travel guide is available regularly—but only while supplies last. Sign up for our newsletter and we will inform you about the delivery date. Alternatively, our e-book is available for immediate download at any time. It can be read as a PDF file on almost all devices.
