Crete is the largest Greek island, with over 1,000 km of coastline, mountains reaching up to 2,500 m, and a history of settlement dating back nearly 10,000 years. The many archaeological sites, dream beaches, and natural treasures make Crete one of Europe’s most popular vacation destinations.

Crete is considered a true treasure trove of Greece, and there is countless things to discover in every direction. Tom & Ella

We spent several months on the island ourselves and personally visited all the attractions of Crete listed below. So we know from firsthand experience what’s truly worth seeing, what was overcrowded, and what we could have skipped.

For each highlight, we’ve listed quieter alternatives, because in the summer, many of Crete’s top attractions are unfortunately very crowded. With our map, you can find all the locations at a glance.

Crete Attractions in the West

#1 Chania Old Town

For us, Chania is one of the most beautiful cities in Greece and an absolute must-see on any visit to Crete. The island’s second-largest city still bears the mark of its former rulers: Venetian palaces, Ottoman mosques, and narrow alleys where centuries of history overlap.

The heart of the city is the Venetian harbor with its 16th-century Egyptian lighthouse. At sunset, the harbor is one of the most beautiful photo spots in all of Greece.

Chania Kreta Stadtrundgang Hafen Reisetipps Urlaub
Venetian Harbor: Postcard view of Chania

Colorful bougainvillea climbs up the vibrant house facades along the cobblestone alleys. Small boutiques, goldsmiths, and traditional taverns line the labyrinth of alleys. In the evening, Sifaka Street is the place to be: this is where the nightlife thrives, where locals and vacationers sit shoulder to shoulder.

📍 Location of Chania: Northwest coast of Crete, approx. 140 km from Heraklion

🚗 Getting to Chania: By rental car or bus from Heraklion (approx. 2 hours) | Parking available outside the Old Town, e.g., at Porta Sabbionara

💡 Our tip for Chania: Plan a day trip to Chania during the week. On Fridays and Saturdays, the Old Town becomes a massive crowd, and on Sundays, some shops are closed. Start early in the morning, and you’ll have the alleys almost to yourself. If you stay overnight, you’ll experience the best part: the quiet evening hours, when the day-trippers are long gone.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Chania Tours*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Chania: If Chania feels too crowded, head about an hour east to Rethymno. This smaller sister city boasts an equally charming old town, the imposing Fortezza fortress, and a more relaxed atmosphere that’s generally a bit less crowded.

#2 Balos Lagoon

For us, Balos Lagoon is one of the most spectacular spots not only in Crete, but in all of Greece. We drove early in the morning along the bumpy gravel road to the Gramvousa Peninsula.

Our little daughter was still asleep when Tom walked up a trail to the cliff by himself. When he came back, he just said, “Ella, you have to see this!” And he was right. The incredibly turquoise water, the almost white sand, and the offshore island—this scenery simply blows you away.

Balos Kreta Ausflug Tipps Anreise Urlaub
Balos Lagoon on Crete

The journey there is arduous: 7 km of gravel road (four-wheel drive recommended!), followed by a 20–30-minute walk downhill. Alternatively, a ferry from Kissamos takes you comfortably and directly to the lagoon. However, if you set out early on your own, you’ll experience Balos just as we did—without the crowds, with that indescribable “wow” moment.

📍 Location of Balos: Northwest tip of Crete, approx. 55 km from Chania

🚗 Getting to Balos: By rental car via Kissamos (7 km of gravel road, 4WD recommended) + 20-minute walk | Alternatively, take the ferry from Kissamos (approx. 1 hour, daily during the season)

💶 Balos admission: Access and parking approx. €4 | Ferry from approx. €15 per person (one-way)

💡 Our tip for Balos: Start as early as possible, ideally before 9 a.m. The tour boats from Kissamos arrive around 11 a.m., and by then the wow factor is gone. Balos is most beautiful on your own or with a small group in the early morning hours. By the way, the view from the steep cliff not far from the parking lot is one of the most beautiful viewpoints on the entire island (at your own risk!).

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Balos Excursion*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Balos: The golden sandy beach of Falassarna is just 30 minutes south and is one of the most beautiful beaches in western Crete. Wide, long, easily accessible, and a bit more laid-back compared to Balos.

→ More tips & info can be found in our separate post: Balos

#3 Elafonisi Lagoon

Elafonisi is one of the most beautiful lagoons in Europe and, for us, one of the absolute highlights of Crete. In May, we were there early in the morning with our little one in the baby carrier and waded together through the ankle-deep water to the offshore dune island.

The fine sand, which actually shimmers pink in some spots, the turquoise-blue water, and the Caribbean-like tranquility of the early morning: this is Elafonisi at its best.

Kreta Highlights Elafonisi Lagune Rosa Strand
Elafonisi: A Touch of the Caribbean in Crete

The color of Crete’s pink beach is caused by deposits of tiny coral and shell sediments. This effect is most beautifully visible in the sunshine and during the quiet morning hours. The entire lagoon landscape is a protected nature reserve (Natura 2000), and taking sand is strictly prohibited. You can reach the offshore dune island—with its circular trail and lighthouse at the northwest tip—by wading across a shallow sandbar.

📍 Location of Elafonisi: Far southwest of Crete, approx. 74 km from Chania

🚗 Getting to Elafonisi: By rental car via Kissamos | Parking lot above the lagoon (approx. €5, 10-min walk) | Alternatively, take the bus from Chania (daily during the season, approx. 2 hours)

💡 Our tip for Elafonisi: Visit the lagoon during the off-season (May or October) to experience its full beauty without the crowds. Between June and September, you’ll need to arrive before 9 a.m. or stay overnight nearby. In the evening, once the day-trippers have left, you’ll have this idyllic spot almost all to yourself.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Elafonisi Excursion*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Elafonisi: Just 5 km east along a paved road, you’ll reach Kedrodasos Beach. A small, less-frequented beach that also features pink-colored sand in places. A great alternative for anyone who finds Elafonisi too crowded in the summer.

#4 Seitan Limani Bay

When you look down on Seitan Limani Bay from above for the first time, you can’t help but think: What colors, what a backdrop! The intense turquoise of the water, nestled in a narrow fjord; definitely one of the most photogenic scenes in all of Crete.

On our first visit, the two of us practically slid halfway down a trail; since then, a better path has been laid out. Unforgettable: halfway down, we encountered Greeks carrying flip-flops and a cooler, along with a herd of goats that were just as carefree as they made their way down the path to look for food scraps among the vacationers below. 😄

kreta strände seitan limani
Seitan Limani: A highly attractive bay

Once we reached the bottom, the bay was smaller than expected. To be honest, the view from above is the more spectacular part. The beach is narrow, space is limited, and by lunchtime it’s already quite crowded, even in the off-season. Our clear recommendation: enjoy the view from the parking lot, walk down briefly for the experience, and then move on. If you really want to go swimming, you’re better off at the neighboring beaches of Akrotiri.

📍 Location of Seitan Limani: Akrotiri Peninsula, approx. 20 km northeast of Chania

🚗 Getting to Seitan Limani: By rental car via Akrotiri | Free parking above the bay | Sturdy footwear strongly recommended for the descent

💡 Our tip for Seitan Limani: The view from above is the real highlight. The best photos are taken around noon, when the bay is fully lit. If you want to hike down, it’s best to start before 9 a.m., as the narrow strip of beach gets very crowded after noon.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Seitan Limani Tours*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Seitan Limani: The nearby Katholiko Bay on the Akrotiri Peninsula is a true hidden gem with a historic rock-cut monastery, crystal-clear waters, and hardly any tourists. For swimmers, the wider beaches of Marathi or Stavros are also recommended.

#5 Samaria Gorge National Park

At around 16 kilometers, the Samaria Gorge is one of the longest gorges in Europe and the only national park on Crete. Every year, thousands of vacationers hike down from the Omalos Plateau at an altitude of 1,200 meters to the Libyan Sea. Since we had our daughter in a baby carrier with us, hiking the entire length wasn’t an option for us.

Fortunately, there’s a wonderful alternative: starting from Agia Roumeli, you can hike the gorge in the opposite direction, and that’s exactly what we did. The trail is mostly flat up to the Iron Gates, the narrowest and most striking part of the gorge, and was easily manageable with a child in the baby carrier. Since we started a bit later, we only encountered a few other hikers on the way. A truly beautiful experience!

Samaria Tour Ausflug Kreta Tipps
Hike through the Samaria Gorge

The gorge is typically open from early May to late October. Those planning the full traverse start at the Xyloskalo entrance on the Omalos Plateau and finish after about 6 hours in Agia Roumeli, from where ferries run back to Chora Sfakion, Sougia, or Paleochora. A rental car or an organized tour is required to reach the Omalos Plateau.

📍 Location of the Samaria Gorge: Southwest Crete, Xyloskalo entrance approx. 42 km south of Chania

🚗 Getting to the Samaria Gorge: By rental car or bus from Chania to Xyloskalo (approx. 1 hour) | Alternatively, guided tours depart from various locations in Crete

💶 Samaria Gorge admission: approx. €10 per person

💡 Our tip for the Samaria Gorge: The gorge is most beautiful in May, when nature is green and visitor numbers are still manageable, as well as in October, when most tourists have left. Between June and September, unfortunately, you have to be prepared for crowds. If you still want to hike during peak season, be one of the first to start very early in the morning. Families and anyone just looking for a glimpse should enter from Agia Roumeli, hiking against the main flow. The path to the Iron Gates is flat and easy to navigate, but hiking in the opposite direction is only permitted at certain times.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Samaria Tours*

🔀 A quieter alternative to the Samaria Gorge: Crete has around 400 gorges, many of which are rarely visited. Particularly beautiful and significantly quieter are the gorges of Imbros (shorter, beginner-friendly), Agiofaraggo (ends right at the sea), and Kourtaliotiko near Preveli. All three are well worth a visit!

#6 Knossos Palace

Knossos is Crete’s most significant archaeological site and, after the Acropolis of Athens, the most visited historical site in all of Greece. Over 500,000 visitors gather here annually to immerse themselves in the 4,000-year-old world of the Minoan civilization.

Opinions are a bit divided among us when it comes to Knossos, though: Tom was immediately captivated by the meticulously restored complex with its vibrant red columns and reconstructed murals. I, on the other hand, remember above all the relentless heat, a fussy toddler, and the constant juggling between listening to the guide and keeping the child entertained. That’s just how it goes sometimes as a travel journalist. 😉

Kreta Sehenswuerdigkeiten Knossos Palast Heraklion Highlights
North Entrance to Knossos: The Palace’s Focal Point

The excavation site includes several restored buildings, elaborately designed with red columns and murals. Information boards provide insights into the history of Minoan culture, which reached its peak here around 4,000 years ago. Anyone who truly wants to understand the site absolutely needs a guide: the ruins alone are difficult to make sense of without an explanation. We had a German-speaking private guide, and even that was a compromise because only one of us could listen at a time.

📍 Location of Knossos: Approx. 7 km south of Heraklion, easily accessible by bus (Line 2) or rental car

🚗 Getting to Knossos: By bus from Heraklion (approx. 20 min., Line 2) or by rental car | Parking available directly at the entrance

🕐 Knossos opening hours: daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM (summer) | until 3:00 PM (winter)

💶 Admission to Knossos: approx. €20 | Combo ticket with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum

💡 Our tip for Knossos: Be sure to book a German-speaking guide; otherwise, much of the site will remain incomprehensible. Arrive early in the morning before the tour buses arrive, and bring sunscreen and plenty of water. The grounds offer very little shade. A visit is also worthwhile in the evening, once the day-trippers have left. It’s best to purchase the combined ticket with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum right away and visit it on the same day.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Knossos Tour*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Knossos: If you want to experience Minoan culture without the crowds, visit the Palace of Malia, about 37 km east of Heraklion. It’s just as impressive, much less crowded, and offers equally good guided tours in German.

→ More tips & info can be found in our separate post: Knossos

#7 Heraklion Archaeological Museum

The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is the most significant museum in Crete and one of the most important in all of Greece. The collection includes finds from nearly every era of Cretan history, from the Neolithic period through the Roman era.

The core of the collection consists of Minoan artifacts, including world-famous objects such as the Snake Goddess, the Bull’s Head Rhyton, and the frescoes from the Palace of Knossos. Anyone visiting Knossos should definitely plan to visit the museum on the same day, as this is where the finds from there truly come into their own.

Heraklion Archaeologisches Museum Kreta Sehenswuerdigkeiten
Visiting the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion

The museum reopened in 2014 after extensive renovations and now displays its treasures across two floors in a modern setting. You should plan at least two hours for a tour of all the galleries; history buffs often need half a day.

📍 Museum location: Downtown Heraklion, right on Eleftherios Venizelos Square

🕐 Opening hours: daily 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM (summer) | Wed 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM

💶 Admission for the museum: approx. €20

💡 Our tip for the museum: Visit the museum in the late afternoon when the tour groups have already left. The combo ticket with Knossos is worth it if you’re visiting both on the same day. We highly recommend an audio guide or a guided tour; without context, many of the significant exhibits unfortunately go unnoticed.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Museum Ticket*

🔀 A quieter alternative: The Historical Museum of Crete, also in Heraklion, is significantly less crowded and showcases the island’s history from the Byzantine era to modern times. Not to be missed: two paintings by El Greco in Crete.

#8 Capital Heraklion

If you’ve already seen Chania and Rethymno, Heraklion (or Iraklio) may seem a bit underwhelming at first glance. The modern concrete architecture and chaotic city bustle feel somewhat dreary and hectic after the picturesque old towns of the west.

But those who give it a chance will be surprised: the historic city center around the Lion Fountain (Morosini) and the Venetian harbor with the imposing Koules Fortress is quite lovely for a stroll. And for foodies, Heraklion is pure heaven anyway.

Heraklion Kreta Sehenswuerdigkeiten Griechenland Urlaub
Heraklion: Capital of Crete

For us, Heraklion is also the culinary capital of Crete. Nowhere else on the island is the concentration of excellent taverns, modern restaurants, and laid-back kafeneions so high. If you really want to savor Heraklion, you should plan for one or two nights and simply let yourself drift in the evenings. Also worth seeing are the Venetian Loggia, St. Titus Church, and, of course, the Archaeological Museum right in the city center.

📍 Location of Heraklion: North coast of Crete, geographical center of the island

🚗 Getting to Heraklion: Accessible by rental car, bus, or ferry | Parking available at the port and outside the Old Town

💡 Our tip for Heraklion: Don’t just treat Heraklion as a stopover—stay at least one night. The city really comes alive in the evening when the taverns are full and student life is in full swing. Many shops are closed on Sundays, but museums and restaurants remain open.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Heraklion Tours*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Heraklion: If you’re not into the big-city vibe, you’ll be better off in Agios Nikolaos. This charming port town in the east of the island is much more laid-back, features a picturesque lake right in the center, and also boasts a great food scene.

#9 Rethymno Old Town

We personally really liked Rethymno. The compact old town is wonderful to explore on foot and feels much more laid-back compared to Chania. Our tip to start with: visit the Fortezza fortress right at the beginning. From the top, you get a magnificent view of the city, the coast, and the turquoise-blue sea.

After that, just wander through the winding alleys, browse the lovely shops, and discover historical highlights like the Rimondi Fountain along the way. The centerpiece here is also the Venetian harbor with its lighthouse, which is smaller than the one in Chania but no less beautiful.

Rethymnon Fortezza Festung Kreta Sehenswuerdigkeiten
View of Rethymno from the Fortezza Fortress

In addition to the old town, the surrounding countryside also has much to offer. In the traditional villages around Rethymno, from Armeni (Minoan cemetery) to Myli (Mill Gorge) and Spili (Lion Fountain), history buffs and nature lovers alike will find plenty to enjoy.

📍 Location of Rethymno: North coast of Crete, approx. 80 km west of Heraklion and approx. 65 km east of Chania

🚗 Getting to Rethymno: By rental car or bus from Heraklion (approx. 1.5 hours) or Chania (approx. 1 hour) | Parking available on the outskirts; the Old Town is best explored on foot

💡 Our tip for Rethymno: Start at the Fortezza for a bird’s-eye view, then wander through the narrow streets. Must-visit: Be sure to stop by The Macedonian near the city park. They serve delicious bougatsa, perfect as a snack while strolling through town. On windy days, many tourists flock from the coast into the city, making the Old Town more crowded than usual.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Rethymno Tours*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Rethymno: The mountain village of Margarites, just 25 km south of Rethymno, is known for its traditional pottery and Byzantine chapels. It’s much less crowded and offers a lovely contrast to the coastal town.

#10 CretAquarium Thalassokosmos

The CRETAquarium Thalassokosmos is located about 20 minutes east of Heraklion in the town of Gournes and offers a fascinating glimpse into the underwater world of the Mediterranean and the Aegean. Several large tanks housing hundreds of marine animals await visitors here, from delicate jellyfish to imposing sharks.

Our daughter simply couldn’t tear herself away from the octopus! For families with children, the aquarium is one of the best destinations in all of Crete, but adults will also get their money’s worth.

The biggest aquarium of Crete was built on a former U.S. military site and is now operated by the Hellenic Center for Marine Research. In addition to the exhibition tanks, there are also informative stations on marine biology and the protection of Mediterranean ecosystems. Afterward, it’s worth taking a detour to the nearby village of Gouves, where a few traditional taverns await hungry visitors.

📍 Location of the CretAquarium: Gournes, approx. 20 km east of Heraklion

🚗 Getting to CretAquarium: By rental car via National Road E75 toward Agios Nikolaos | Free parking directly at the entrance

🕐 CretAquarium hours: daily 9:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. (summer) | until 4:00 p.m. (winter)

💶 CretAquarium admission: Adults approx. €12 | Children approx. €6

💡 Our tip for the CretAquarium: Plan on spending a good two to three hours; that’s enough time to see everything at a leisurely pace without rushing. It’s also ideal on hot days or when the weather isn’t cooperating, as the aquarium is fully covered and pleasantly air-conditioned. Afterward, stop by a tavern in Gouves and wind down the afternoon.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: CretAquarium Tour*

🔀 A quieter alternative to the CretAquarium: If you’re traveling with children and want to experience more, there are other attractions in the area: Dinosaur Park, Labyrinth Park, and the Aquaworld Aquarium with its reptile rescue center are all family-friendly alternatives in the region.

#11 Preveli Palm Grove

For us, Preveli is one of the most picturesque places in all of Crete. Back then, we first drove to the parking lot west of the beach and enjoyed the view of the gorge and the palm grove from there. Truly spectacular! Since the descent down the many steps with a toddler on our backs is quite arduous, we decided on the spot to drive on to the nearby beach of Drymiskiano Ammoudi, from where the walk to Preveli is much more pleasant.

The Preveli beach itself was quite crowded during our visit, so we simply walked upstream through the palm forest. A truly beautiful setting! Further up the river, we cooled our feet. You can also cool off in the river itself, but be careful: a man who swam too close to the geese was suddenly attacked. Better to keep your distance! 😄

Preveli Strand Kreta Süden Rethymno Urlaub
Preveli Palm Grove

The Preveli Palm Grove is considered the second largest in Crete. The date palms of the Phoenix Theophrasti species grow here along the emerald-green Megalopotamos River all the way down to the sea, creating a setting rarely found anywhere else in Europe. At the end of the river’s course, the gorge opens up to the beach, which is reached by excursion boats from Plakias and Agia Galini.

📍 Location of Preveli: South coast of Crete, approx. 43 km south of Rethymno

🚗 Getting to Preveli: By rental car via Plakias or Rethymno | Paid parking above the beach | Alternatively, take a boat trip from Plakias or Agia Galini

💡 Our tip for Preveli: First, head to the western viewpoint for the spectacular view from above, then continue to Drymiskiano Ammoudi Beach for a more relaxed walk. Start before 10 a.m.; after that, the tour boats arrive and the beach fills up quickly. If you want to experience the palm grove in peace, simply walk upstream along the river.

🚌 View guided tours to Preveli on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Preveli Excursion*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Preveli: Drymiskiano Ammoudi Beach right next door is worth a visit even without the palm grove and is significantly quieter than Preveli itself. If you’re looking for even more seclusion, head further west toward Ammoudi and Damnoni, where several quiet coves line up one after another.

#12 Melidoni and Sfentoni Stalactite Caves

We stopped counting long ago how many stalactite caves we’ve visited around the world. But only a few have truly left a lasting impression on us. The Melidoni and Sfentoni caves are an exception—perhaps precisely because we didn’t expect them to be so spectacular.

The individual chambers with their stalagmites and stalactites are truly worth seeing and are so impressively illuminated by colored lights that even our little one was hard to pry away. And another practical advantage: on hot days in Crete, it’s pleasantly cool in the cave, almost refreshing.

Sfentoni Hoehle Kreta Heraklion Sehenswuerdigkeiten Zoniana
Atmospheric Sfentoni Cave

Both caves are located in the Ida Mountains in the heart of Crete. The Sfentoni Cave near Zoniana impresses with several large chambers and an atmospheric light installation. The Melidoni Cave near Rethymno boasts not only impressive stalactites but also a moving history: in 1824, hundreds of Cretan civilians were trapped and killed here by Ottoman troops. This gives a visit a profound historical dimension.

📍 Location of the caves: Sfentoni near Zoniana, approx. 47 km south of Heraklion | Melidoni approx. 30 km east of Rethymno

🚗 Getting to the caves: Both are easily accessible by rental car | Parking available directly at the entrances

🕐 Opening hours: Sfentoni daily 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (summer) | Melidoni daily 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

💶 Admission: Sfentoni Cave approx. €7 | Melidoni Cave approx. €5

💡 Our tip for the caves: The quietest tours are the first one in the morning and the last one in the afternoon. Also ideal as an activity on particularly hot days, as the caves maintain pleasant temperatures year-round.

🔀 Other caves in Crete: If you want to go even deeper, check out the Idaean Grotto on Mount Psiloritis, said to be the home of the young Zeus; the Agia Paraskevi stalactite cave in Skotino; or the Milatos Cave in the east of the island, which also has a tragic history dating back to the Ottoman era.

#13 Arkadi Monastery

Arkadi Monastery is the most significant monastery in Crete and one of Greece’s most important national monuments. Our visit was brief but truly impressive: the monastery complex is architecturally stunning, the 16th-century Baroque west facade of the monastery church is a real photo opportunity, and the well-kept courtyard invites you to linger.

Unfortunately, the story behind it is a very sad one. In 1866, hundreds of Cretan rebels and civilians barricaded themselves here against Ottoman troops. When the situation became hopeless, they set fire to the powder magazine, killing themselves and many of the attackers. This act of resistance became a symbol of the Cretan struggle for freedom.

Kreta Arkadi Kloster Rethymno Sehenswuerdigkeiten
Arkadi Monastery near Rethymno

Today, the complex is still inhabited by monks. A small museum on the grounds tells the story of the monastery and the 1866 uprising. A visit is also worthwhile in combination with an excursion to the surrounding villages and gorges of the Rethymno hinterland.

📍 Location of Arkadi Monastery: Approx. 20 km southeast of Rethymno

🚗 Getting to Arkadi Monastery: By rental car via Rethymno | Parking directly in front of the monastery, free of charge

🕐 Arkadi Monastery opening hours: Daily 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM (summer) | Admission approx. €4

💡 Our tip for Arkadi Monastery: Visit the monastery early in the morning or in the late afternoon, when the tour buses from Rethymno haven’t arrived yet or have already left. The visit itself takes about an hour, a bit longer if you include the museum. It pairs well with a trip to the pottery village of Margarites, which is only 30 minutes away.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Arkadi Tours*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Arkadi: Crete has many other monasteries worth seeing off the beaten path. A hidden gem about an hour from Rethymno is the Vossakos Monastery in the mountains, which is much less crowded.

#14 Spinalonga Island

Spinalonga is one of Crete’s most visited attractions, and rightly so. We took the last boat of the day and had the sprawling complex almost to ourselves. Strolling through the historic alleys in the evening sun, standing on the bastions, and gazing out at the turquoise waters of Elounda Bay—it was truly unforgettable.

The island’s history, however, is anything but light: Until 1957, Spinalonga served as a leper colony, one of the last in all of Europe. Anyone familiar with Victoria Hislop’s book knows just how moving this past is.

Spinalonga Kreta Ausflug Boot Insel Kalydon
Spinalonga Island from the shore

The island of Spinalonga is accessible only by boat; ferries depart regularly from Plaka, and guided tours also depart from Elounda. On the island itself, you’ll find a well-maintained walking trail through the Venetian fortress, the remains of the former leper colony, and a small museum. You should plan at least two hours for the walk.

📍 Location of Spinalonga: Elounda Bay, approx. 15 km north of Agios Nikolaos

🚢 Getting to Spinalonga: Ferry from Plaka (approx. 10 min.) | Ferries run daily during the season; the last boat usually departs around 6 p.m.

💶 Admission to Spinalonga: approx. €20 | Ferry approx. €12 per person (round trip)

💡 Our tip for Spinalonga: Take the last boat of the day, and you’ll have the island almost entirely to yourself. Most day-trippers have already left, and the evening atmosphere on the bastions is absolutely magical. Combine your visit with dinner in Elounda or Agios Nikolaos.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Spinalonga Tour*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Spinalonga: If you’d rather view the fortress from the water, rent a small boat from Minos Boats and explore Elounda Bay on your own. The view of Spinalonga from the sea is also impressive.

#15 Psychro Cave on the Lasithi Plateau

The Lasithi Plateau lies at an altitude of over 800 meters, nestled between mighty mountains, and certainly has its charm with its many wind turbines and traditional villages. It’s definitely worth a visit for a day trip if you’re staying nearby. However, if you’re traveling from farther away, we recommend skipping the long drive and using the time for other Crete attractions instead.

The Cave of Zeus in Psychro, considered the birthplace of the father of the Greek gods, is heavily commercialized for tourism and didn’t particularly impress us. However, a real hidden gem in the area is the small hamlet of Krasi, home to a large old plane tree and a beautiful fountain. The Krassopsychia tavern there has a truly wonderful atmosphere and is the perfect spot for a lunch break along the way.

Lasithi Hochebene Kreta Windmuehlen Heraklion Agios Nikolaos
Windmills of the Lasithi Plateau

The plateau itself is fertile and green, surrounded by the peaks of the Dikti Mountains. In the villages around the plateau, you can still experience authentic Cretan rural life. The main town of Tzermiado has a small archaeological museum, while the village of Agios Georgios features a folklore museum showcasing the Cretan way of life.

📍 Location of the Lasithi Plateau: Central-Eastern Crete, approx. 60 km southeast of Heraklion

🚗 Getting to the Lasithi Plateau: By rental car via Heraklion or Agios Nikolaos | Paid parking at the Psychro Cave | The road through the plateau is well-maintained

🕐 Psychro Cave opening hours: temporarily closed until 2027

💶 Psychro Cave admission: approx. €6 per person

💡 Our tip for the Lasithi Plateau: Only plan this trip if you’re already traveling in eastern Crete. Combine it with a stop in Krasi for a lunch break with authentic Cretan flair. In our opinion, you can safely skip the Cave of Zeus and use the time for a longer walk through the plateau.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Lasithi Excursion*

🔀 A more rewarding alternative to the Psychro Cave: If you want to experience truly impressive caves, head to the Sfentoni Cave near Zoniana or the Melidoni Cave near Rethymno. Both are much more impressively presented and less overrun by tourists than the Cave of Zeus.

#16 Vai Palm Beach

Vai Palm Beach in northeastern Crete is a true exotic gem on the island. Hundreds of Phoenix Theophrasti date palms line an entire valley all the way down to the sea, creating a backdrop rarely found anywhere else in Europe.

In the off-season, Vai is a truly idyllic spot; back then, we could still stroll through the palm forest. Access is now restricted to protect the palm trees, which are a protected species. The view from above the Palm Beach Restaurant is particularly beautiful; from there, you can overlook the entire beach at Vai.

Kreta Straende Tipps Vai Beach
Vai Beach in Eastern Crete

What very few people know: At the northern end of the beach, there is a footpath that runs along the edge of the palm forest and climbs up to a small viewing platform. From up there, you have a fantastic view of the entire palm forest of Vai. A real insider tip that is definitely worth your visit at Vai!

📍 Location of Vai: Northeast tip of Crete, approx. 90 km east of Agios Nikolaos

🚗 Getting to Vai: By rental car via Sitia | Paid parking directly on the beach | Bus service from Sitia available during the season

💶 Admission to Vai: Parking approx. €3.50

💡 Our tip for Vai: Visit Vai during the off-season or early in the morning before the tour buses arrive. Be sure to follow the trail at the northern end of the beach to the viewing platform; from up there, you’ll get the best view of the palm forest.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Vai Excursion*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Vai: Just a few kilometers north lie the beaches of Erimoupolis and Itanos, both of which are rarely visited; Itanos Beach also features a few palm trees along the shoreline. If you find Vai too crowded in the summer, you’ll find a much more relaxed atmosphere here.

Crete Attractions in the South

#17 Matala Caves

Matala is a must-see. The former hippie village in southern Crete is a real experience in itself, thanks to the quirky cave dwellings carved into the sandstone cliffs and the view of the picturesque bay.

The caves of Matala were inhabited as early as the Neolithic era, later used as Roman burial sites, and discovered in the 1960s and 1970s by hippies from all over the world as a free home. This special atmosphere is still palpable today.

Matala Hoehlen Kreta Empfehlenswert Besuch
The Caves of Matala

The Matala caves are carved into the rock on several levels and are easily accessible. Those who climb to the upper levels can enjoy a fantastic view of the bay. But please be very careful near the edges: Unfortunately, shortly before our visit, a tourist fell to their death while taking photos there. The drop-offs are not secured in some places, so always move with caution and keep a safe distance from the edge.

📍 Location of Matala: South coast of Crete, approx. 68 km southwest of Heraklion

🚗 Getting to Matala: By rental car via Heraklion or Rethymno | Parking at the town entrance, paid during the season

🕐 Cave opening hours: daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. (summer) | Admission approx. €5

💡 Our tip for Matala: During the summer, Matala is completely overcrowded during the day. Visit the town early in the morning or in the late afternoon, so you can enjoy the caves and the bay in peace. The atmosphere is much more pleasant in the off-season anyway. When climbing to the upper levels of the caves, please be very careful and watch out for unsecured edges.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Matala Excursion*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Matala: If the hustle and bustle is too much for you, head to the quiet villages of Pitsidia or Sivas in the hinterland. Kommos and Kalamaki are great beach alternatives, both significantly less crowded. We also highly recommend a hike through the secluded Agiofaraggo Gorge, which leads directly to the sea.

#18 Minoan Palace of Phaistos

Phaistos is the most significant Minoan archaeological site on Crete after Knossos and is much more pleasant to visit than its famous counterpart in the north. No crowds, no tour buses arriving every few minutes—instead, a sprawling complex with a breathtaking view over the fertile Messara Plain and the Psiloritis Mountains in the background.

The Palace of Phaistps was built around 1900 BC, destroyed and rebuilt several times, and is now considered one of the best-preserved Minoan sites in existence. Phaistos is famous above all for the discovery of the Phaistos Disc, a clay tablet with writing from the 17th century BC that has still not been deciphered. The original can be seen today at the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion.

Kreta Archaeologische Staetten Phaistos Matala Sehenswuerdigkeiten
Palace of Phaistos near Matala

One drawback of Phaistos is that there is no museum on site; all of the artefacts have been moved to Heraklion. If you really want to understand the site, it’s best to visit the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion beforehand. Phaistos is especially beautiful in the evening, when the heat subsides and the light over the Messara Plain is magical. If you’re still hungry after your visit, head to nearby Kamilari and stop by the Kentrikon Cafe. Cozy atmosphere, good food, and hardly any tourists.

📍 Location of Phaistos: Southern Crete, Messara Plain, approx. 63 km southwest of Heraklion

🚗 Getting to Phaistos: By rental car via Heraklion or Matala | Free parking right at the entrance

🕐 Phaistos opening hours: daily from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM (summer)

💶 Admission to Phaistos: approx. €15 per person

💡 Our tip for Phaistos: Visit the site in the late afternoon; it’s noticeably cooler then, and the light over the Messara Plain is beautiful. Visit the Archaeological Museum in Heraklion beforehand—it will help you understand the site much better. Be sure to stop by the Kentrikon Cafe in Kamilari afterward.

🚌 View guided tours on GetYourGuide* for this Crete attraction: Phaistos Tours*

🔀 A quieter alternative to Phaistos: The ancient site of Agia Triada is only 4 km away and is much quieter. Also worth a visit is the sprawling site of Gortys (Gortyna) on the way back to Heraklion, the most significant Roman site on Crete with impressive ruins and a well-preserved legal code from the 5th century BC.

FAQ on Crete Attractions

What should you see in Crete?

The Balos and Elafonisi lagoons, the old town of Chania with its Venetian harbor, the Preveli palm grove, and the Matala cave dwellings are truly impressive places. The Palace of Knossos is cool, but really only for history buffs. Plus, it’s always crowded there. It’s better to visit one of the many museums in Heraklion instead. The Natural History Museum or the Archaeological Museum, for example, are worth seeing. The Samaria Gorge is a worthwhile destination for hikers and nature lovers, but not a must-see for the average tourist.

Where is the most beautiful place in Crete?

The Balos Lagoon in the northwest, with its turquoise waters, offshore island, and stunning backdrop, is an absolute highlight. Equally spectacular are Elafonisi with its pink sand, Preveli with its palm trees along the emerald-green river, and the old town of Chania. Seitan Limani is certainly photogenic, but tiny and overcrowded. Instead, it’s worth taking a detour to Stavros Bay, which served as the film set for “Zorba the Greek.” The mountain regions of Lefka Ori and Psiloritis, as well as the Lasithi Plateau with its windmills, offer impressive scenery.

What are the insider tips for Crete?

– the coast between Paleochora and Sougia
– the coast below Falassarna near Sfinari and Livadia
– the Agiofaraggo Gorge and Lentas near Matala
– the many stalactite caves in the Psiloritis Mountains
– Katholiko Bay with the monastery on Akrotiri
– the beaches of Erimoupolis and Itanos above Vai

What is the most beautiful old town in Crete?

Chania is considered the most beautiful old town, with a Venetian harbor and lighthouse, colorful houses adorned with bougainvillea, and cobblestone alleys filled with boutiques and taverns. Rethymno is more charming and compact, with its quaint old town featuring the Rimondi Fountain and Fortezza Fortress—many vacationers feel right at home here. Heraklion lacks historic architecture, but the city has a student town vibe and the Koules Fortress at the harbor, which offers a great view of the city.

Is Chania or Heraklion more beautiful?

Chania is definitely more beautiful! It has a picturesque Venetian harbor, a historic old town, and a relaxed atmosphere. Heraklion is larger, busier, and has few historic buildings, but it’s a student town with trendy cafes and bars and is home to the most important museums. Chania is better for sightseeing. Heraklion is better for museums and a visit to Knossos. It’s best to visit both, but plan more time for Chania with its many photo opportunities. 🙂

What should you avoid in Crete?

During peak season (July/August), the top attractions in Crete are completely overcrowded at midday! With hundreds of thousands of visitors per year, Knossos resembles a pilgrimage site, and Elafonisi, Balos, Vai, and Preveli are also packed to the brim. Chania gets uncomfortably crowded after noon, especially on Fridays and Saturdays. Preveli is only recommended until 11 a.m. in the summer; after that, it’s unbearably hot and really crowded, and parking spots are scarce. Avoid windy days in Rethymno, because that’s when everyone floods into the city!

Where is the most beautiful sandy beach in Crete?

Elafonisi and the Balos Lagoon offer pink and light-colored sand, turquoise-blue water, and a Caribbean vibe! The beaches at Falassarna (golden sand, long), Preveli (palm trees by the river), Vai (palm-lined beach), and Malia are also gorgeous. In the south, the beaches of Kommos and Kalamaki near Matala are beautiful. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, Marathi, Stavros, or Drymiskiano Ammoudi are recommended. Since Crete has over 1,000 km of coastline, there are plenty of quiet spots. It’s best to ask the locals.

Which attractions in Crete are suitable for families with children?

Attractions include the CretAquarium Thalassokosmos in Gournes with its marine life and large tanks, Dinosauria Park, Labyrinth Park, and the Aquaworld Aquarium with its reptile rescue center. The beaches of Elafonisi and Balos have shallow waters perfect for splashing around. Balos, however, is difficult to reach (gravel road or boat). The beaches of Vai and Preveli, with their palm trees, are a real adventure and sure to be a highlight for the little ones. Caves like the Sfentoni Cave are exciting because they’re beautifully lit.
