The largest island in the Dodecanese attracts more than 1.5 million holidaymakers every year. No wonder, because on Rhodes miles of sandy beaches alternate with impressive mountain massifs, original villages meet lively seaside resorts, and impressive Knights’ castles crown hilltops all across the island.

»The almost 80 km long sunny island of Rhodes offers much more than beach and sea and is ideal for an extended holiday with many excursions.«

The northern coast of Rhodes is the tourist heart of the island, with package hotels and all-inclusive resorts dominating the picture. In the far south, tourism seems to be only slowly gaining momentum. Long-time fans are drawn to the island’s hinterland anyway, where they can discover Rhodes island away from the crowds.

Even though Rhodes is overcrowded in summer, we also discovered quiet corners during our stay on the popular Greek island. Our personal conclusion about the island can be found at the end of the article. Below, we show you the best Rhodes sights and travel tips for your holiday:

#1 Day trip to Rhodes Town

The capital of Rhodes is one of the most beautiful destinations on the island for us. Especially the medieval old town, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, enchants with its narrow streets, pretty cafés, and historic buildings. The imposing Grand Master’s Palace of Rhodes is well worth a visit during your time in the island’s capital.

→ The capital of Rhodes has many sights to discover. Learn more here: Rhodes Town

#2 Kallithea: Thermal Baths of Rhodes

The former Rhodes Thermal Baths, about 9 km from the capital, are well worth a detour for their beautiful architecture and idyllic location directly on the sea. Following extensive restoration work, the site reopened in July 2007 and has been drawing visitors ever since.

→ The most important information for a visit to the Kallithea Thermal Baths can be found in this article: Springs of Kallithea

Especially in the morning, there is not so much hustle and bustle at the Kallithea Thermal Baths, and you can visit the individual buildings and relax on the beach undisturbed. On site there is a small stretch of beach with sun loungers to relax, and for a drink the restaurant Kallithea Springs Seaside is well worth a visit.

  • Opening hours Kallithea Thermal Baths Rhodes: daily from 8 a.m. | Admission: €5

#3 Filerimos Hill

Not far from the lively resort of Ialysos rises the 267-metre-high, densely forested mountain known as Filerimos Hill. The ancient city of Ialysos is said to have been located on this site. From Rhodes Town it is about a 30-minute drive; a large free car park is available on site.

At the entrance to Filerimos, you will already be greeted by its colourful inhabitants – flocks of peacocks have taken up residence in the forest. On the right, a beautiful cypress avenue leads to the Filerimos Cross, a huge concrete cross. From the observation deck you have a great view of the west coast of Rhodes.

If you take the left path from the entrance, you will reach the site of the ancient city of Ialysos, but unlike the Filerimos Cross, it has an entrance fee. This is also where the 10th-century Iera Moni Filerimou Monastery is situated. It was restored by the Italians around a century ago.

→ You can find more tips for a trip to Filerimos Hill and Monastery in this article: Filerimos on Rhodes

Archaeological excavations across the site have uncovered traces of settlement stretching back thousands of years. These include the remains of a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena, as well as the early Christian chapel of Agios Georgios Chostos, which preserves remarkably well-maintained frescoes.

Behind the monastery in an easterly direction are the remains of the Kastro Filerimou from the Byzantine period (11th century). Among other things, marble blocks from the ancient temple were used as building material. Our personal highlight: a striking avenue of wind-sculpted trees leads to a small viewing platform with a view of the north coast.

  • Opening hours Filerimos Monastery and Kastro: daily 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. | Admission: €10

#4 Anthony Quinn Bay

The island of Rhodes is certainly not short of beautiful bays. A special gem is the Anthony Quinn Bay south of Faliraki. The sea shimmers here in the most beautiful shades of blue, and the bay is framed by forest-covered rocky cliffs.

→ More tips for a trip to Anthony Quinn Bay can be found in this article: Anthony Quinn Bay

Rhodos strände anthony quinn bucht

Water shoes are recommended, as the seabed is rocky. In high season, it can be difficult to find a free spot on the narrow sandy and pebble beaches. It is, unsurprisingly, one of the most popular day-trip spots on the island. The leeward coast can also be explored excellently by sea kayak – tours can be booked via GetYourGuide*:

➲ To the guided sea kayak tour*

If there is too much hustle and bustle at Anthony Quinn Bay, we recommend a detour to the nearby Chapel of Profitis Ilias. The hill offers spectacular views of Anthony Quinn and Ladiko bays, as well as the hotel landscape of Faliraki.

There were hardly any people up here even in midsummer, and you can enjoy the idyll all to yourself. Chairs are even provided for a peaceful, uninterrupted view. For those looking for a quiet seaside spot in the region, the kilometre-long Afandou Beach, north of the resort of Kolymbia, is the place to go.

#5 Tsambika on Rhodes

Between the popular resort of Kolymbia and the traditional village of Archangelos lies one of the absolute top highlights of Rhodes: Tsambika. The name refers to the small church at an altitude of 330 m as well as to the nearby monastery and the popular sandy beach.

→ Everything you need to know about the beach and Monastery of Tsambika can be found in our article: Tsambika Rhodes

Even from afar, the white Kyra Tsambika Chapel on a hill above the sea is visible. A narrow road leads up to a car park, from where it is a short walk (15 min., 300 steps) to St. Mary’s Church. The rather steep climb is worth it – the view from up here over the east coast of Rhodes is simply magnificent.

Tsambika Beach can be reached from the main road via a separate turn-off. The dune landscape with its fine sandy beach and gently sloping sea impresses right away. Until the end of May it is still quiet here, and you can swim relatively undisturbed. In summer, the dream beach transforms into a lively, bustling hotspot.

#6 Afandou and Archangelos

Afandou and Archangelos, the two largest villages of Rhodes, are located north and south of Tsambika. Both have remained untouched by tourism, giving you an authentic impression of a typical Greek small town, with numerous tavernas and cafés at very reasonable prices.

Archangelos Rhodos Dorf Tipps
Archangelos: Largest village of Rhodes

In the 1960s, many residents were still drawn to Germany as guest workers. In fact, pop star Udo Jürgens is said to have written the melody for his world hit “Greek Wine” after a holiday in Rhodes. Many former emigrants have returned, and so you can see some German signs – even young people sometimes speak German here.

The village square of Afandou bears the name “Gummersbach” and commemorates the many Greeks who settled in the small town near Cologne. In the eponymous Kafenion Gummersbach, good home cooking is offered at reasonable prices. The residents of Archangelos, on the other hand, were increasingly drawn to Krefeld. Those who are interested in the history, can visit the Hellas Taverna.

Beer from Rhodes

Beer lovers won’t have to go without familiar international brands such as Heineken or Beck’s on holiday. But Rhodes even has its own beer – the most well-known being Zythos Rhodes (formerly VAP), which is available almost everywhere and is a personal favourite of ours.

Craft beer fans should definitely take a detour to the microbrewery The Mule’s Brew in Archangelos. Since 2022, pale ale, stout and even wheat beer have been freshly brewed here. A tasting is possible from 12:00 to 21:00 (closed on Wednesdays).

#7 Faethon: Rhodes’ Little Horses

Did you know that there is an endemic breed of small horses in Rhodes? They are closely related to the so-called Skyros ponies on the Sporades island of the same name and belong to the smallest horse breeds in the world. Coming face to face with these muscular miniature horses is an awe-inspiring experience!

Rhodos kleine Pferde Faethon Farm Erfahrung

The good news: animal lovers can visit the pony-sized steeds (approx. 110 cm high) during their Rhodes holiday. The bad news: the Rhodes miniature horses (Equus caballus caballus) are critically endangered – there are fewer than 15 individuals remaining on the entire island.

→ Are you travelling with kids in Rhodes? Then we’ll tell you our highlights for your family holiday on the island in this article: Rhodes with children

Scientists have found that small horses lived thousands of years ago on Aegean islands such as Rhodes and Lesbos. Old photographs and paintings prove that the small Rhodes horses were an integral part of the native fauna until around 80 years ago and lived wild in the island’s mountains.

The robust horses were valued as working, sporting and parade animals. Due to their agility and hardiness, they were even used by the Greek army as cavalry horses in the 19th century. After the Second World War and increasing industrialisation, the population declined rapidly. Did the rise of tourism also play a role?

At the Faethon Miniature Horses Farm near Archangelos, you can visit the endangered animals and see the remarkable work of the team around Jakobos and his wife Hachoula. Since 2001, they have been devotedly caring for the preservation of these animals and protecting a piece of Rhodes’ cultural heritage.

Rhodos Pferde Farm Faethon Hof.jpg
Visiting Faethon

While elsewhere in the world such a species would be a real magnet for visitors, the small horses on Rhodes are largely unknown to tourists and even locals. Building a stable population, however, takes a great deal of time and money.

There are almost no subsidies from the Greek state or the island administration, so the valuable work on site relies on private donations. Visits are possible daily without prior appointment from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., and admission to Faethon is free.

Together with the staff – including the much-loved Georgios – the animals are fed, and information material is available on site. Since the conservation breeding of the dwarf horse breed is the primary focus, the wild character of the horses must be preserved.

Faethon Miniature Horses Farm Rhodos
Feeding with Georgios

The conservation farm is therefore not a petting zoo – the horses are very temperamental and sometimes bite, so a safe distance must be maintained at all times! For us personally, the visit to Faethon Farm (also Phaethon) was one of the most impressive experiences on Rhodes.

→ More information about the horses of Rhodes can be found here: Miniature Horses and Faethon Facebook

#8 Lindos: Rhodes’ most beautiful village

Coming from the north, you can see the town of Lindos with its pretty whitewashed houses from afar. Lindos is considered one of the most popular excursion destinations on Rhodes and is particularly crowded in July and August due to the many organised bus tours. If that doesn’t put you off, you can book your tour via GetYourGuide*:

➲ To the organised bus tour*

If you arrive in Lindos before 9:00 a.m., you will be rewarded with a pleasantly quiet atmosphere. Stroll through the alleyways of Lindos and soak up the charming ambience. Without the crowds, the place will leave a lasting impression.

→ More information about Lindos and the Acropolis can be found in our separate article: Lindos on Rhodes

The landmark of Lindos towers above the town on a 116-metre-high hill. The Acropolis of Lindos is one of the most popular sights in Greece. Thanks to its well-preserved structures and magnificent views from the top, a visit is worthwhile even for those less interested in history.

#9 Epta Piges, Eleousa & Profitis Ilias

If you have accommodation on the east coast and want to explore the west of Rhodes, it is worth taking the scenic route through the interior via Eleousa and Profitis Ilias. The drive will take you through lush vegetation and beautiful forests.

Only 5 km outside the village of Kolymbia is our first stop, the so-called Seven Springs (Epta Piges). This charming forested spot with its bubbling springs and lake is unfortunately very crowded in high season. The natural atmosphere of Epta Piges can feel somewhat diminished by the high volume of visitors in summer.

Eleousa in Rhodes

In the village of Eleousa, things are a little quieter, and you can still see the remnants of the Italian occupation here. The Italians wanted to make Rhodes a model holiday resort in the 1920s.

At the exit of Eleousa you will pass an artificial pond. The pool with its small fountain was created by the Italians as a park feature. Today, the pond is home to the Gizani, a small fish considered a true survivor.

The path continues past the old Byzantine church Agios Nikolaos Fountoukli, which is nestled in an idyllic setting of fig and olive trees.

An atmosphere reminiscent of the Black Forest awaits you in the area around Profitis Ilias. In a dense coniferous forest stands the Italian-built Hotel Elafos (Greek for deer) and opposite, the café Elafaki (Greek for fawn).

#10 Kamiros and Kritinia

Via Salakos, the route continues to the ancient city of Kamiros. A visit to the excavation site is particularly worthwhile for history enthusiasts. Kamiros is one of the most important archaeological sites on Rhodes and was once the smallest of the island’s three city-states, after Lindos and Ialysos.

Around 3,500 years ago, Kamiros was inhabited, but it was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake in the 2nd century AD (see article: Greece Earthquake). Today’s ruins of the Hellenistic city stretch along a pine-covered hillside and offer a glimpse of ancient temples, columns, cisterns and residential buildings.

On the upper level lies the Ancient Acropolis of Kamiros, from which you can enjoy a beautiful view of the deep blue Aegean Sea. The finds from the site are exhibited in the archaeological museum in Rhodes’ old town.

Kritinia Fortress

For castle enthusiasts, the Kritinia Fortress just 15 km south of ancient Kamiros is a must-see. Since 1472, the walls of a Knights’ castle – also known locally as Kastellos – have been perched on a mighty rocky cone. It is freely accessible and offers a magnificent panoramic view over the west coast to the neighbouring island of Halki.

Steep steps lead up into the unenclosed site, so take care with young children. Sturdy shoes are also recommended. Below the Kritinia Castle, right next to the car park, was the Kritinia Cafe by Georgios, which unfortunately closed permanently in May 2024. The replacement café has received mixed reviews for its pricing.

  • Opening hours Kritinia Fortress: daily, freely accessible

Day trip to Halki

It is about 2 km from Kritinia Kastro to the coastal hamlet of Kamiros Skala, which consists of only three tavernas and a large concrete pier. From here there are daily ferry connections to the picturesque neighbouring island of Halki, just a stone’s throw away.

→ Our tips for the neighbouring island of Rhodes can be found here: Halki

Halki describes itself as an island of peace and friendship and has only a few hundred inhabitants. Yet the island boasts one of the most beautiful villages in Greece: Emborio. Thanks to the short ferry crossing (approx. 40 min), Halki makes an excellent day trip from Rhodes.

Embonas Wine Village

From Kritinia it is a 20-minute drive along the foothills of the mighty Attaviros Mountains to Embonas. Even from afar you can see the village of 1,000 souls, which is known as the Wine Village of Rhodes. Even if the rapidly growing town does not exactly invite you to linger, a wine tasting at one of the numerous wineries is a must on Rhodes.

We visited the winery Kounaki Wines and tasted some excellent wines. This oldest winery on Rhodes is a family business where we were warmly welcomed. A bottle of wine costs between €10 and €20. Kounaki also offers home-distilled spirits and craft beer, with wine tastings starting at €5 per person.

→ A private wine tour on Rhodes can be booked online via Kounaki Wines.

Since excursion buses also stop in the Embonas Wine Village daily, we recommend a visit in the morning or late afternoon. Those flirting with a guided wine tour should book a small group or, ideally, a private tour via GetYourGuide*.

#11 Asklipio and Laerma

The central mountainous region in the south of Rhodes is the most charming area of the island for us personally. Even though the area around Laerma and Asklipio was severely affected by the forest fires on Rhodes in 2023 (more here: Forest fires in Greece) and has lost some of its natural beauty, it remains a must for those seeking peace and quiet, as well as for nature lovers.

Geheimtipps Rhodos Asklipio Kastro Ausblick

Only a few minutes separate the lively coastal town of Kiotari from the tranquil Asklipio, and yet the two places are worlds apart. Asklipio has retained its charm to this day, and even in summer it is surprisingly quiet here. The village of 500 inhabitants is picturesquely set on a hillside and overlooked by the ruins of a small castle.

Rhodos Cafe Chrisma Asklipio

A walk through the narrow, whitewashed streets is well worthwhile. A handful of traditional tavernas and cafés (Recommendation: Chrisma) cater to your physical well-being. Highlights are undoubtedly the Kastro above the village and the church of Kimisis tis Theotokou on the village square, which was built in 1060 and is one of the oldest churches in Rhodes.

Rhodos Geheimtipps Castle of Asklipio

You can reach the Kastro in about 15 minutes on foot from the village square. Admission to the Castle of Asklipio is free, and it is especially worth visiting in the evening, as the view from the castle ruins (15th century) is phenomenal. In ancient times, a temple in honour of the healing god Asclepius is thought to have stood here, hence the name of the place.

Visiting Laerma

From Asklipio, you continue west into the green heart of the island, where you may encounter the heraldic animal of Rhodes – the Dama dama (fallow deer). After about 15 minutes of winding roads, you will reach the Thari Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Greece at around 1,000 years old. Just 2 km further lies the mountain village of Laerma.

#12 Monolithos: Knight’s Castle of Rhodes

One of the absolute highlights of Rhodes is the ruined Knights’ Castle of Monolithos in the far west of the island. On the way you pass through the village of Monolithos, and shortly afterwards the striking rock cone comes into view – the scenery is magnificent and justifiably popular with visitors. Many classic Rhodes island tours make a stop here.

The castle was built in the 15th century by the Knights of St. John on a 236-metre-high single rock (Greek: mono lithos). Not much remains of the former fortress, but it is still well worth climbing the steps to the highest point, where the whitewashed chapel of Agios Panteleimon stands.

→ All information about Monolithos Castle and its surroundings can be found in our article: Monolithos Rhodes

On the grounds of the Castle of Monolithos, remains of castle walls, house ruins and a cistern can still be seen. The open round arch of a former castle chapel is unfortunately no longer accessible due to the risk of collapse.

Access to the ruins is free of charge. At the foot of the rock you will find the simple Tavern The Castle and a free car park. If you have the chance to stay for sunset in Monolithos, a truly spectacular experience awaits you – unfortunately no longer a hidden gem!

Honey village Siana

The mountain village in the southwest of Rhodes can be ideally combined with a visit to the ruins of Monolithos Castle and the coast of Apolakkia. Thanks to its local specialities, Siana has firmly put itself on the tourist map. A stop in the so-called Honey Village of Rhodes is definitely worth it.

Particularly worth seeing in Siana is the magnificent church of Agios Panteleimon (feast day on 27 July) with its impressive wall paintings. Right next door is the old church of the same name, which is also worth a visit, but is temporarily closed.

At Siana you can try Thyme honey from Rhodes. Numerous shops and stalls are located along the main street. The Natura Maria Shop and the Beehouse Shop (both owners are called Maria) are richly stocked with souvenirs such as home-made olive oil and tasty honey.

In the morning it is still pleasantly quiet in the tranquil village, but from noon numerous coaches arrive and it can get very crowded in the small town. Those seeking peace and quiet are then drawn to the nearby mountain villages Ag. Isidoros, Profilia and Istrios, where you can find the traditional Rhodes.

#12 Cape Fourni

If you drive further down the road to the coast at the castle ruins, you will pass some beautiful bays. On the natural Alyki Beach it is a bit quieter than on the neighboring beach of Fourni. Sun loungers and umbrellas are set up on the pebble beach, and the operators keep the bay clean.

If you walk up the rocky outcrop of Cape Fourni towards the sea, you can also discover ancient burial chambers and a cave chapel from early Christian times. The rugged rocky outcrop with its bizarre sandstone formations is mostly windswept, and you proceed at your own risk.

#13 Apolakkia Reservoir

True Rhodes explorers should not miss the region around Apolakkia under any circumstances. Apolakkia is known as the center of melon cultivation in Rhodes. The delicious watermelons of Rhodes (Greek: Karpouzia) are grown here along the coast on large fields. There are some street vendors where you can buy fresh melons.

About 4 km north of the inconspicuous farming village of Apolakkia lies the Apolakkia Reservoir, surrounded by lush nature and bizarre hill formations. Very few tourists venture into this remote area. The dam was built in 1989 to supply the surrounding agriculture with sufficient water during the summer months.

The beautiful reservoir, which has also been used as a local recreation area for several years, impresses at first glance with its enchanting turquoise-blue colour. At the dam, the Rhodescape Park offers an extensive leisure programme for young and old, including archery, zip lines, pedal boating and horse riding.

Or you can simply enjoy the peace and quiet and admire the Byzantine church of Kimisi tis Theotokou in the north of the lake. It is a remnant of the time when the valley was not yet flooded. There is also delicious homemade pizza and cool drinks on site. All information about the Rhodescape Park can be found here: Rhodescape Park

Time travel in Mesanagros

Shortly after Apolakkia, a narrow track branches off from the coastal road into the mountains and leads to Moni Skiadi Monastery (daily 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.), which is worth seeing. A little later you reach the sleepy mountain village of Mesanagros. In the Village Café in the center of the village you can treat yourself to a Greek coffee or a cool drink.

Right next to the café is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (13th century) with an impressive mosaic floor and early Christian baptismal font. As a vacationer, you belong to the rare species in the town of 65 souls, but the inhabitants are happy about every visitor. For us, the village was one of the most relaxed places in Rhodes, if not in the whole Dodecanese.

#14 Lachania: The original Rhodes

The village Lachania, about 3 km from the sea, exudes a very special charm and is probably a dream destination for individualists in Rhodes who want to explore the island off the beaten track.

Many of the old stone houses have been lovingly restored and are in the hands of artists and free spirits from all over the world. Furthermore, there are some nice Rhodes holiday homes and apartments in Lachania. The so called Artists’ Village of Rhodes is suitable for all those who want to spend their Rhodes holidays far away from the hustle and bustle.

The village square of Lachania looks like something out of a picture book. Pure Greek idyll with a large plane tree, whitewashed houses, a babbling fountain and the village church. In the evening, the mood in the Tavern Platanos with a glass of wine is truly romantic and certainly an unforgettable Rhodes experience.

#15 Agios Pavlos

A real gem awaits you on the way from Gennadi via Plimmyri to the southern tip of Rhodes, not far from the farming village of Kattavia. Directly on the road is the Café Colonia San Marco in the former Monastery of Agios Pavlos, which dates back to the time of the Italian occupation.

Unassuming from the outside, the monastery reveals a beautiful arcaded courtyard within, which invites you to linger. Agios Pavlos in the dry south of Rhodes is a bit reminiscent of a sleepy village in Spain or Latin America. On our last visit, the Catholic church was being renovated and could not be visited.

The café owners Dimitri and his brother Tsambikos provide guests with excellent coffee, small snacks and cool drinks. The homemade aloe vera juice is particularly delicious. A small shop offers products from the region, including the noodles known for Kattavia.

Not far from Agios Pavlos are the ruins of an old silk factory, which was used as a prison camp by the German Wehrmacht during World War II. At lunchtime, you can relax in the village of Kattavia, our recommendation is the rustic tavern Eftihia.

#16 Prasonisi: Southern Cape of Rhodes

The headland at Rhodes’ southern tip is well and truly off the secret list, and so hundreds of visitors descend on the wide sandy area in summer. The windswept Cape Prasonisi is firmly in the hands of surfers and kiters. In recent years, several surf schools, taverns and accommodations have set up shop in Prasonisi.

rhodos prasonisi surfen
Prasonisi: Well attended in July

The narrow isthmus of Prasonisi changes its shape depending on the current and weather conditions. The sandbar can therefore be submerged or washed away for weeks at a time, so you can’t walk directly to the island of the same name.

The currents at this strait are very treacherous, we advise against swimming to the other side. It’s better not to take any risks here, there have already been tragic accidents at Prasonisi in recent years! Enough time should be planned for the return trip to the north of the island, the drive to Rhodes Town takes about 1.5 hours (90 km).

Beautiful beaches in Rhodes

The island of Rhodes is not stingy with beautiful beaches and picturesque bays. While pebble and stone beaches dominate in the west, you will find numerous sheltered bays with sandy beaches and crystal clear water on the east coast. But it is only really quiet in the south, here there are undisturbed swimming opportunities even in summer – our favorite is the Agios Georgios Beach.

Car Rental & Getting Around Rhodes

The best thing to do is to take an extended road trip on Rhodes by rental car. If you are traveling individually, you can also explore some beautiful places far away from the tourist hustle and bustle. In the high season, the island highway in the east of Rhodes is very busy. Maintain speeds and avoid overtaking in confusing situations.

Explore Rhodes individually

Rhodes Rental Cars are available from the international rental companies directly at the airport. Regional providers are often cheaper and will also bring you the desired vehicle to the airport. Depending on the season and model, small cars start from about 40 euros per day. The longer you rent, the cheaper the daily price becomes. We also like to use Discover Cars* for the rental car search:

➲ To rental cars for the island*

Since most roads in Rhodes are paved, an off-road vehicle is not absolutely necessary. In the high season in July and August, we recommend that you reserve a vehicle in advance from Germany.

Taxi service in Rhodes: Do you need a taxi to get from A to B in Rhodes? Or would you like to book a shuttle service from Rhodes airport to the hotel? We can recommend the Rhodes Cabs taxi service. The positive reviews and experience on the Internet speak for themselves. About the provider: Rhodes Cabs

Scooters and quads in Rhodes can also be rented on site, but they are only suitable to a limited extent for larger island tours due to the distances. If you want to explore a lot in Rhodes, then it’s better to choose a small car. For short distances and trips to the nearest beach, a scooter is definitely enough.

Rhodes Sights Video

This beautifully made Rhodes video by Robert Polasek is sure to get you in the holiday spirit. Have fun watching:

🔍 Our conclusion about Rhodes: We have already visited the island of Rhodes four times. The first trip took us to the capital for a day in 2018 and we were thrilled by the medieval flair of the old town. The second time we explored the island was in the summer and we were shocked by the crowds, the traffic and the garbage on the roads. It took two more attempts until Rhodes really inspired us. In 2023, we spent four weeks researching extensively in May/June and finally the island took our hearts. Especially in the center and in the south (below Lindos) Rhodes showed us its original side. The extreme hospitality of the Rhodians is striking, in many taverns and accommodations we felt like part of the family. Filoxenia (Greek: friend of the stranger) is still lived here! Our top tip: Rhodes in the high season can be frustrating. If you can, you should switch to the low season, then the island will be remembered for a long time.

FAQ about Rhodes Highlights

What are the most important sights on Rhodes?

The top highlights of the island include the medieval Old Town of Rhodes Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the picturesque village of Lindos with its Acropolis, the restored Kallithea Springs, and Anthony Quinn Bay. The ancient city of Kamiros, the Knights’ Castle of Monolithos, and the Seven Springs (Epta Piges) are also among the most popular excursion destinations.

Is Rhodes expensive or cheap?

That largely depends on where you spend your time. In general, Rhodes is noticeably cheaper than the Cycladic islands of Santorini or Mykonos. In heavily touristic areas, prices tend to rise while quality sometimes decreases. In the countryside and in the more traditional villages, however, you can still eat well and find accommodation at very reasonable prices.

Where is the quietest place on Rhodes?

While the tourist hub is located along the north coast, the south and the island’s interior are much more relaxed. Quiet places away from the crowds include the artistic village of Lachania, the tiny settlement of Mesanagros with only about 65 residents, the peaceful mountain village of Asklipio, and the secluded Agios Georgios Beach in the south of the island.

Which beaches are recommended on Rhodes?

The beaches are very diverse: the west coast is dominated by pebble and rocky beaches, while the east coast offers many sheltered bays with fine sandy beaches, such as Tsambika Beach or Afandou Beach. In the far south, at the windy Cape Prasonisi, there is a large sandy area that is a hotspot for surfers and kitesurfers.

Do you need a rental car on Rhodes?

A rental car is highly recommended for an extensive road trip, as Rhodes is almost 80 kilometers long. If you want to explore the island’s interior and the traditional villages in the south independently, a car is ideal. Scooters and quads are only partially suitable for larger island tours due to the long distances.

Is it worth visiting the neighboring islands from Rhodes?

Yes, Rhodes Town is one of the main hubs for island hopping in the eastern Aegean. Boat tours to Symi depart from there. From the small harbor of Kamiros Skala, you can also reach the very authentic island of Chalki in just under 40 minutes by ferry. It is perfect for a day trip.
