Tsambika Beach in the east of Rhodes is one of the most popular beaches on the island. A dune landscape with golden sand, framed by rugged rock faces, meets a turquoise-blue sea. With countless water sports activities and beach parties, there is a lot going on here in summer. Slightly unexpected: directly above the beach stands the Tsambika Chapel, considered the most important pilgrimage site on Rhodes.
»Tsambika – the name stands for both the most spiritual place on the island and its liveliest party beach, and perfectly captures the two faces of Rhodes.«
For the Orthodox Rhodians, Tsambika is considered the soul of Rhodes. The miraculous icon of Mary, venerated in a chapel above the beach, has fulfilled the heartfelt wish of many childless couples – giving them a little Tsambika or Tsambikos, but more on that later. The ascent to the Tsambika Chapel is a highlight for every visitor, and the view of the coastline is simply spectacular.
Nowhere else on Rhodes are spirituality and mass tourism in such close proximity as at Tsambika. In this article, we share the most important tips for your trip to Tsambika on Rhodes:

The Tsambika Pilgrimage Chapel sits directly above the beach on a 330 m high hill.

Is it worth renting a car for Tsambika?
If you want to explore Rhodes independently, renting a rental car for Tsambika is definitely worthwhile. From most spots on the east coast, the beach, the chapel and the monastery can all be reached in around 30 minutes. The trip also combines easily with a visit to the Seven Springs of Rhodes or a detour to Stegna.

What is the parking situation on site?
Tsambika Beach has free parking. The car park is unpaved and can get very dusty on windy days. If you are visiting the Tsambika Chapel on the mountain, you can park for free in the lot behind Tavern Panorama. Spaces up here are limited, so take care when manoeuvring.
By bus to Tsambika Beach
Tsambika can also be reached by public bus from Rhodes Town in about 40 minutes. The bus stop Tsampika Psili is located on the main road at the turn-off to the mountain chapel. From here it is about 1.5 km on foot to the top. A second bus stop is found at the turn-off to Tsambika Beach, roughly 1.5 km from the sea.

Bus tickets are cheap, but as is common in Greece, make sure to signal your stop to the driver in good time – otherwise the bus will simply continue to the next one. If you prefer not to travel by bus or car, check our partner GetYourGuide* for an organised boat trip to Tsambika:

#2 Tsambika Beach
The name Tsambika today refers to three places: the chapel of Kyra Tsambika on the hilltop, the monastery of Kato Tsambika at the foot of the mountain, and Tsambika Beach below. The roughly 1.5 km stretch of fine golden sand is undoubtedly one of the most popular swimming spots on the island.
→ We reveal the most beautiful beaches in Rhodes in this article: Rhodes Beaches
Behind the beach stretches an extensive dune landscape that, remarkably, has not yet been blocked by hotel complexes. The turquoise water is crystal clear and the shore slopes gently into the sea, making this Rhodes beach perfect for families with small children. Until the end of May, Tsambika Beach is still blissfully quiet.
In recent years, however, the beach has become completely overrun, and in summer Tsambika resembles an entertainment strip. Countless bars have lined the beautiful coastline with sun loungers, leaving almost no natural sections remaining. A floating water park sits just offshore, and the rest of the beach is occupied by water sports operators offering jet skis, parasailing and more.

🍽️ Accommodation, tavernas & cafés
If you are looking for peace and quiet, head to the far ends of the beach or avoid Tsambika altogether as a swimming spot in summer. A walk to the northern end is still worthwhile. A huge Greek flag on a rock makes for a great souvenir photo from your Rhodes holiday.
💡 Weather in Rhodes: Rhodes is one of the warmest regions in Greece. From June to September, blue skies and sunshine are virtually guaranteed. Visit in the low season and you will experience Tsambika Beach at its most beautiful. One word of caution: in strong northwesterly winds, the fine sand is literally whipped into the air and stings like needles on the skin. #4 Church of the Virgin Mary Tsambika (Kyra Psili)
The Church of the Virgin Mary Tsambika, also known as Panagia Tsambika or Kyria Psili, stands on a 330 m high mountain above the sea. A visit is a must for every Orthodox Rhodian and is well worth it for holidaymakers too – if only for the breathtaking view of the Aegean Sea and Tsambika Beach far below.
From National Road 95, an inconspicuous turn-off leads up a steep concrete road to the free car park below the summit (220 m). From there, the final 110 metres of altitude are covered on foot via 300 steps up to the most famous pilgrimage site on Rhodes. In midsummer this is a sweaty climb, though at least the path runs beneath shady trees throughout.

At the top, a 360-degree panorama unfolds across the surrounding landscape; the most beautiful views of Tsambika Beach open up a little further below the summit. Inside the chapel, the many votive tablets with baby motifs and dolls placed before the icon catch the eye – each one a symbol of a fulfilled wish for children after visiting this holy place. The original miraculous icon of Mary, however, is kept in the Kato Tsambika Monastery.

Miraculous icon of Panagia Tsambika
The legend has it that fishermen in the Middle Ages discovered a precious icon of the Virgin Mary on the beach of Tsambika. Investigations into its origins revealed that it had come from a church on Cyprus and had likely been seized by pirates. The icon was duly returned. However, the fishermen found it at Tsambika once again the very next morning.

Seeing this as a miracle, the fishermen decided to honour the Blessed Mother by building the chapel “Kyra Tsambika” on the mountain above where the icon had appeared at Tsambika Beach. Transporting the building materials up the hill was gruelling work, so not only the men and boys but also the childless women of the community had to lend a hand.
On the day the summit church was completed, another miracle occurred: all the childless women who had helped with the construction became pregnant. This marked the beginning of the pilgrimage, and ever since, women from across Europe have been making their way to Mount Tsambika in the hope of having their wish for a child fulfilled.
The first names Tsambika and Tsambikos exist only on Rhodes, given in gratitude for this wish being granted. During our visit, we watched Greek women making the pilgrimage up the 300 steps in reverence – and barefoot. Some even spend a night in the pilgrim’s room beside the chapel. It clearly works, otherwise there wouldn’t be quite so many tavernas on Rhodes bearing the name Tsambika or Tsambikos.
Visit to Kato Tsambika Monastery
The Monastery of the Blessed Virgin Mary Tsambika stands directly on the main road heading south, a good kilometre past Tsambika Beach. Built in the 19th century at the foot of Mount Tsambika, it is known today by the nickname “Kato Tsambika” (Greek for “lower Tsambika”).
The now uninhabited, gleaming white monastery can be visited in appropriate clothing. The main church houses the original miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary and impressive wall paintings. The monastery forecourt is regularly the setting for weddings and baptisms celebrating the names Tsambika or Tsambikos.

Next to the main church is a monastery shop selling religious souvenirs and various icons, including replicas of the Tsambika icon. On 8 September, a large church festival is held here to mark the Nativity of Mary (“Génnisis tis Theotókou”). The whole of Rhodes comes alive and the celebrations at Kato Tsambika Monastery go on until the early hours of the morning.
- Opening hours Tsambika Monastery: daily 8:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m., free admission, donations welcome in the main church

#5 Restaurants near Tsambika Beach
The bars and restaurants on Tsambika Beach change hands almost every year. It is a lucrative business – investors from Athens make a small fortune from overpriced drinks and sun loungers, while quality often falls by the wayside. You are better served at the tavernas along the access road. Here are all our recommendations:
Amethystos Gastronomy Meze Bar (Archangelos): Host Aggelos and his friendly team serve Greek cuisine with a creative twist. We stopped in several times, worked our way through the menu, and everything was outstanding. For us, personally one of the best restaurants on Rhodes. Evening only!
Anemos Taverna (Moni Tsambika): Situated just 50 m below Kato Tsambika Monastery, this traditional taverna has a cosy terrace with views of Mount Tsambika and the surrounding countryside. The menu focuses on hearty grilled dishes alongside delicious vegetarian mezedes. Great value for money!
Kyma (Stegna): Beach restaurant right on Stegna Beach, serving good Mediterranean cuisine and freshly prepared salads. The staff are friendly (some speak German), and the tables and chairs sit directly on the beach beneath palm trees – holiday mood guaranteed.

Taverna Anthoula (Kolymbia): A charming family taverna at the Kolymbia crossroads towards Epta Piges and Eleousa. Delicious classic Greek cuisine, fair prices, a relaxed atmosphere and welcoming staff.
Taverna Maria (Tsambika): On the access road to Tsambika Beach, the friendly team here serves tasty home cooking at fair prices. A relaxed setting away from the bustle of the beach, with a children’s playground to keep younger guests happy.
#6 Places of interest in the area
Seven Springs of Rhodes (Epta Piges)
The famous Seven Springs (Greek: Epta Piges) are just 7 km (around 10 minutes by car) west of Tsambika and easy to combine into a day trip. Even though the idyllic forest with its bubbling springs, waterfall and reservoir gets busy in summer, it makes for a welcome change from the beach.

Visit to a Rhodes brewery
Beer lovers are well catered for on Rhodes. In addition to Rhodes Beer Zythos VAP, available almost everywhere on the island, there is another brewery not far from Tsambika. Craft beer fans should make a detour to Archangelos, where the microbrewery The Mule’s Brew is tucked away just off the main street.
The Mule’s Brew produced its first experimental batches in 2022. That craft brewing can thrive on the Greek islands is also demonstrated by the well-known Nissos Brewery on Tinos. Today the taproom offers Red IPA, Pale Ale, Stout and even wheat beer, among others. Tastings are available from Thursday to Tuesday for a small fee.
- Opening hours Rhodes Brewery The Mule’s Brew: Wed closed, Mon–Tue & Thu 12 pm–7 pm, Fri–Sun 12 pm–9 pm
Coastal village of Stegna
Not only as an alternative to the overcrowded Tsambika Beach, a trip to the charming hamlet of Stegna, just 12 minutes away by car, is always a good idea in summer. The waterfront promenade with its many restaurants and cafés invites you to stroll, and the long sandy beach with its pebbly sections offers swimming fun for all ages.
A highlight of Stegna is the somewhat hidden Grande Blue Beach on the southern edge of the village. The sea shimmers in the most beautiful shades of blue, enclosed by dramatic rocky cliffs. A picturesque staircase from the Restaurant Grande Blue leads directly down to the water. The bay, which is home to the so-called Archangelos Cave, is also excellent for snorkelling.
