Corfu Sights: Our 12 travel tips for your holiday

After almost a decade of traveling to Greece, it was high time for us to finally discover the islands of the Ionian Sea. Our first stop: Corfu! For four weeks we explored so many Corfu sights from north to south, enjoyed the Mediterranean charm and made warm friendships.

For those who only know the islands of the Aegean Sea, Corfu is a completely different Greece: instead of white cube houses, you see colorful, magnificent villas, and the otherwise barren landscape is replaced by lush green pine forests.

The landscape of Corfu inspires right away

Slender cypresses tower over the wooded slopes, with countless olive groves and vines crowded in between. Corfu is a paradise for nature lovers, who want to enjoy the lush flora of the green island in the Ionian Sea in their full glory.

In addition, Corfu is a Greek bathing paradise with an almost endless variety of beaches. Lonely bays with white pebbles and rugged rocky cliffs in the north alternate with golden sandy beaches and dune landscape in the south. Everywhere the sea shimmers in the most beautiful shades of blue.

What there is to discover on Kerkyra (Greek for Corfu), we will tell you in our Corfu Highlights:

#1 Places to visit in Corfu Town

With more than 40,000 inhabitants, the capital of Corfu, also called Kerkyra, is the economic and cultural centre of the island. Especially the rustic charm of the historic old town alleys is quickly succumbed to and so it is worthwhile to plan at least one overnight stay in Corfu Town.

→ You can find our accommodation in the old town of Corfu here: Corfu Sky Loft

The special flair of Corfu Old Town, you will experience especially in the early morning hours and in the evening, when the day tourists and cruisers have left and you can stroll through the narrow and winding streets in peace. If you want, you can also join a guided city tour, bookable on GetYourGuide*:

The Venetian influence cannot be overlooked in the architecture of Kerkyra. For over 400 years, the Venetians have ruled on the island of Corfu and left their mark. Since 2007, the historic old town of Corfu is an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

#2 Vlacherna Monastery and Mouse Island

About 6 km south of the capital in the Kanoni district, you will discover one of the most popular photo motifs on the island. Vlacherna Monastery (Panagias Vlachernon) is not missing in any travel catalogue and is worth a visit at any time of the day. The 17th-century church sparkles gleaming white on a headland in the sea, directly behind it is the runway of the airport.

Corfu Highlight: Vlacherna Monastery

Via a concrete footbridge you can visit the Vlacherna monastery and then take a kaiki to the neighboring Pontikonisi Island (5 min crossing 3 € p.p.). On the island is the church of Sotiros with a kiosk and a handicraft shop. Turtles and peacocks hide in the dense bushes of the island, which is also called Mouse Island.

Mon Repos Park

Today, the Park of Mon Repos, the former summer residence of the British royal family, is somewhat overgrown and unkempt. Prince Philip († 2021 at 99), husband of former British Queen Elizabeth II († 2022), was born on the estate. In 1994, the Greek state acquired the complex and renovated parts of Mon Repos Castle.

#3 Achilleion of Corfu

The former summer residence of the Austrian Empress Elisabeth is one of the most important sights of the island of Corfu and a pilgrimage destination for countless Sisi fans.

korfu sehenswuerdigkeiten achilleion sisi
The Achilleion of Empress Sisi

The magnificent Achilleion Palace, including its park and viewing terrace, is located to the south of the island’s capital. It is well worth a visit, particularly in the early morning before the countless tour buses arrive.

Sisi named her estate after the hero Achilles from Greek mythology, whom she admired for his strength and beauty. The Achilleion was built between 1889 and 1891 by the Italian architect Raffaele Caritto.

The different rooms of the Villa of Sisi with their beautiful ceiling paintings, works of art and furnishings are very worth seeing and are explained in German and English with the help of an audio guide.

We loved the Achilleion – Garden of the Muses with the stature of the dying Achilles as well as the terrace which offers a magnificent view over Corfu’s east coast. You should plan at least two hours for a tour of the facility.

  • Opening hours Achilleion of Corfu: in summertime open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., 7 € entrance fee (only Garden)

Update 2026 Achilleion closed: Due to extensive renovation work, the interiors of the Achilleion are closed until further notice, only the garden can be visited.

#4 Sights in Corfu Mountains

A Corfu tour by rental car is particularly worthwhile. It is recommended that you head into the central mountain massif around the Pantokrator, the island’s highest mountain at 906 m. A safe and anticipatory driving style is indispensable due to the dilapidated road conditions and narrow serpentines.

It is not uncommon to break a sweat when passing the narrow village streets, especially when the bus is coming towards you. What else you need to consider in traffic, as well as tips for renting a car, can be found here: Car rental in Greece

Village idyll in Sokraki

Far away from the tourist strongholds in the north, you will come across pretty villages in the lonely mountain landscape, where you can still feel a touch of Corfu’s originality.

ano korakiana korfu bergdoerfer
View of Ano Korakiana in the north of Corfu

The best way to start your tour is from the village Ano Korakiana. You cross the pretty village and head towards Sokraki. In hairpin bends, the narrow road winds up to the mountain plateau. At the entrance to the village you can park your vehicle and walk into the village.

During our visit, we were the only tourists and a wonderful peace and quiet wafted through the photogenic alleys. The Platia of Sokraki is a real gem and in the Kafenion Vartzas (to be found as Καφεπαντοπωλείον ο Βάρζας) you can unwind with a cool drink or coffee.

korfu sokraki kafenion vartzas
Coffee break at the Platia in Sokraki

The likeable owner Dimitri inherited the coffee house and small shop from his family and lovingly renovated it in 2019. Upstairs, you’ll get a glimpse of the traditional décor of a Corfiot home.

At the eastern end of the village, the Greek craftsman Stelios runs his olive wood workshop Olive Wood Art Sokraki. In his studio, he sells beautiful household items and souvenirs made of the noble wood at fair prices.

korfu olivenholz werkstatt sokraki
A visit to Stelio’s olive wood manufactory

The olive wood comes from the island and its products are artfully crafted from the trunk or branches. We were so impressed by the quality that we immediately stocked up on a nice souvenir of Corfu.

Nymfes Waterfall

From Sokraki, our mountain tour continues via Zigos and Klimatia to Nymfes. In the mountain village you follow the signage to Nymfes Waterfall (Cataract Nymfon). A dirt road leads through dense forest to a park hollow. From here, a trail goes steeply down a slope to the left.

nymfes wasserfall korfu
Jungle feeling at Nymfes Waterfall

Once at the bottom, you will find yourself in a lush green valley (beware of mosquitoes!). Even from afar you can hear the masses of water rushing down. Even during our visit in July, some water was still dripping down the moss-covered rock. If you stop by in spring, you will experience Nymfes Waterfall in all its glory.

Far-sightedness from the Pantocrator

On a clear day, you can make a detour from Nymfes via Episkepsi and Strinilas to the Pantokrator. The highest mountain of Corfu offers a complete panoramic view of the island, the Albanian coast and the Ionian Sea.

pantokrator korfu berg
How to get to the Pantokrator

The drive across the mountain plateau is adventurous due to the miserable road conditions. If you want to have the journey a little more relaxed, then drive from Nymfes down to the coast via Roda and then up again towards Strinilas.

The summit of the Pantocrator itself is not very spectacular. Apart from several radio masts, a simple snack bar and a rather unadorned monastery, there is not much to see except for the panorama. The tight parking situation is also a bit chaotic. If there is too much going on, it is best to park your car a little below the summit.

On the way back from the Pantokrator, it is worth stopping off at the rustic Tavern Oasis in Strinilas. Here you sit comfortably under the canopy of an ancient elm tree directly on the Platia. The friendly owners serve hearty Greek dishes. We found the homemade moussaka and the eggplant saganaki particularly delicious.

Paleo Perithia

Today, almost every travel guide to Corfu advertises Paleo Perithia, the ghost village of Corfu, as a hidden gem in the north of the island. Unfortunately, the village could not really inspire us.

paleo perithia korfu geisterdorf platia
The village square of Paleo Perithia

At least five taverns vie for the favor of vacationers, three of them on the Platia alone. Over a hundred cars park in front of the village every day during the season. So, the spooky atmosphere of Paleo Perithia doesn’t come to us in the daily migration of holidaymakers.

If you walk a little further behind to the southern end of the village, you will still feel a little of the original charm of Old Peritia. At the end of the village, beekeeper Vasilis sells his Corfu honey in an idyllic garden. The only nice memory we took away from the place.

korfu geisterdorf paleo perithia
Somewhat ghostly atmosphere on the outskirts of the village

If you are looking for a “real” ghost village on Corfu, then we recommend Old Sinies (Palies Sinies), below the Pantokrator mountain. The old ruins of houses are really lonely in the landscape and can only be reached on foot or with an off-road vehicle.

#5 Kassiopi and Erimitis

The north of Corfu was developed for tourism very early on, so places like Sidari, Roda and Acharavi offer countless hotels, apartments and holiday resorts which mainly cater for British tourists.

nordkueste korfu straende acharavi
Light pebble beach near Acharavi

Even though Corfu has been largely spared from major building sins, these coastal towns with their gyro stalls, souvenir shops and tour operators do not necessarily exude much charm. We also found the beaches more beautiful in other places in Corfu, but that’s a matter of taste.

Harbour town Kassiopi

Next stopp is the neat harbour town Kassiopi in the northeast of the island, where motorboats, yachts and excursion boats sail along its bulbous pier. Around it, you can watch the hustle and bustle on the promenade along the harbour in one of the numerous cafés or taverns.

kassiopi korfu tipps

You can enjoy a beautiful view of the village from the decayed Venetian Kastro of Kassiopi, which is located above the village. You can also take a short walk along the old walls and under the shade of the olive trees.

korfu straende bataria beach kassiopi
Bataria Beach near Kassiopi

Behind it are the beautiful bathing bays of Bataria and Kanoni Beach, which have light gravel and turquoise blue water. Especially on weekends and in the high season, however, you have to expect a lot of crowds here.

Erimitis Nature Reserve

If you want to swim in peace, head to the picturesque bays of the Erimitis nature reserve, to the east of Kassiopi. From Avlaki Beach, trails lead to the paradisiacal beaches of Vrachli, Tzoufaka, Arias and Akoli. White pebble and sandy beach form a wonderful contrast with the turquoise blue, crystal clear sea water.

erimitis korfu natur
Erimitis: An endangered natural paradise

Unfortunately, the former Corfu nature reserve has now been sold to a private investor, who wants to build a luxury resort here in the middle of untouched nature. So it remains to be seen how long the beautiful beaches of Erimitis will still be accessible from land.

Port of Koloura

If you drive south again from Erimitis along the east coast, you can stop off at the Port of Kouloura for a while. Away from the tourist crowds, you can enjoy an idyllic peace and quiet here and watch the colourful fishing boats sailing in the harbour pier with a cool drink.

kouloura hafen korfu

If you continue west from Kassiopi along the north coast, you will pass the tourist strongholds of Acharavi, Roda and Sidari. You could almost leave the lively places to the left, if it weren’t for two Corfu highlights that are worth a stop.

Visiting Roda

Along the main road from Roda to Sidari is the beautiful soap shop of Jonathan and his family. At the Corfu Soap Workshop you have a wide range of natural body soaps made from olive oil combined with island herbs and natural fragrances such as rosemary and lavender.

The soaps for hands, body and hair are all traditionally made and do not contain preservatives or other chemical additives. We stocked up in the Corfu Soap Workshop and took a few soaps for the family as souvenirs from Corfu.

#6 Canal d’Amour

A must-do activity on the island and one of Corfu’s top sights is the famous Canal d’Amour. Made up of a series of sea bays that have cut deep into the sandstone cliffs, the individual ‘canals’ shape the appearance of the northwest coast today.

canal damour korfu sidari
The Love Channels in Sidari

Unfortunately, the entire stretch of coast around Sidari up to the “Love Channels of Corfu” is completely overcrowded in the high season. There was not so much crowd for our visit and so we were able to explore the individual bays and sandstone cliffs undisturbed.

→ Tips for the Canal d’Amour on Corfu can be found here: Canal d’Amour

Busy in summer: D’Amour Beach Bar

If the Canal d’Amour is too crowded for you, there are quieter vantage points further west around Cape Drastis to admire Corfu’s spectacular cliff formations.

#7 Cape Drastis

The northwest of Corfu is especially popular with individualists and shines with beautiful sandy beaches and a romantic coastal landscape.

korfu straende agios stefanos
Fantastic sandy beach of Agios Stefanos

We spent a week in the beautiful coastal hamlet of Agios Stefanos, with its kilometre-long sandy beach and could hardly have imagined a better holiday resort on Corfu. We stayed in the beautiful grounds of the Delfino Blu Boutique Hotel (Info here), in a direct beach and sea location.

💡 Excursion to the Diapontian Islands:From the old port in Agios Stefanos you can visit the islands of Othoni, Erikoussa and Mathraki several times a week with the small passenger ferry Pegasus. You can get information about the Diapontian Islands from your hotel and soon on our blog.

A real Corfu highlight and an alternative to the Canal d’Amour are the spectacular sandstone cliffs of the Cape Drastis. Both during the day and at sunset, it is worth taking a detour to an offshore viewpoint where you can capture the cliffs photographically.

korfu cape drastis
Magical atmosphere at Cape Drastis

Since the cape itself is privately owned, you cannot enter its top. Inconspicuous signs point to the private property. It’s better not to get too close to the choleric owners and it’s best to respect the barrier. If you walk the gravel road down to the coast at Cape Drastis, you will find a boat rental and a small bay to refresh.

Especially in the evening, Cape Drastis is a romantic place that you can wonderfully combine with a subsequent visit to the 7th Heaven Bar at Loggas Beach. The stylish panorama bar is located directly above the sandstone cliffs and is the most popular place to watch the sunset on Corfu.

korfu bar 7th heaven loggas beach
Cocktail over the cliffs

If you want to get a free seat in the front row, it’s best to stop by 7th Heaven a little earlier. The cocktails are very tasty and cost about €11. For a souvenir photo or Insta selfie, there is also an imposing shudder terrace that juts out over the cliff edge.

#8 Porto Timoni Beach

In addition to the wide, kilometre-long, sandy beaches of Agios Stefanos and Agios Georgios, the twin bays of Porto Timoni have also gained a certain celebrity status on Corfu.

porto timoni bucht korfu
Postcard motif: The bay of Porto Timoni

If you want to visit this natural beauty, it is worth leaving early. In the village of Afionas, you can drive with a small car, scooter or quad bike to the Porto Timoni Restaurant. There is a paid parking lot here (€5 per day) from which you can walk directly down to the twin bays.

In the village itself, the parking situation is unfortunately very chaotic. With a larger vehicle, it is recommended to park a little outside and then walk into the village due to the narrow road conditions.

Hike to Porto Timoni beach

The steep descent down to the bay takes about 25 minutes. The trail is sometimes slippery and it is advisable to have sturdy shoes with you. About 300 m before you reach the beach, there is an unobstructed viewpoint of the Porto Timoni Beach – the postcard motif par excellence.

Both of Corfu’s twin bays have pebbly beaches with crystal-clear water that was still freezing cold in July. In the height of summer, the two beaches are heavily frequented, so the best time to visit is between 8-11 a.m. in the morning.

korfu straende porto timoni

Since there is no beach operator, you should take provisions and enough water with you. Please help to keep this idyllic spot on Corfu clean and take your garbage back with you.

Visiting Corfu Beer

Forget Mythos, Fix and Alfa – once you’ve tried Corfu Beer, you probably won’t want to drink anything else. In this microbrewery of Greece, one can still speak of real brewing. Hops from Germany, malt from Thrace (Northern Greece) and filtered spring water from the island – it doesn’t take much more than that to produce more than seven different types of beer.

corfu beer brauerei korfu
Visiting Corfu Beer

Since the fresh beer from Corfu is not preserved, it can only be kept for a few months and must be permanently refrigerated. One more reason to enjoy noble varieties such as Red Ale Special, Dark Ale, Amorosa White, EPOS, I.P.A. and Ionian Pilsner ice-cold directly on site.

In 2006, the first pilsner rolled off the production line, and now owner Spiros and his team produce over one million liters of beer per year for the Greek market and export to Germany, Italy and England. During the season, brewery tours and tastings are regularly held in the village of Arillas. The area’s highlight is the annual Corfu Beer Festival, which takes place at the end of September.

#9 Paleokastritsa on Corfu

The coastal landscape around the village of Paleokastritsa in the northwest of the island with its meter-high bright rocky cliffs is a postcard motif and for us personally one of the most beautiful places on Corfu. The scenic coastline is best explored on an organized mini-cruise with BBQ. Click on the GetYourGuide* tour link to learn more about prices and availability:

Ascent to Angelokastro

You can get a first impression of Paleokastritsa and its dream bays from the top of Angelokastro. The Byzantine fortress from the 13th century is now only a castle ruin, bizarrely enthroned on a rocky outcrop.

The Angelokastro in the evening light

However, the sweaty ascent is worth it, because once at the top a magnificent panorama of the Northwest of Corfu awaits you. From up here you can watch the many motorboats. On the plateau of the ruin itself, you can visit a cave church, as well as a chapel and a cistern.

Paleokastritsa Monastery

A popular pilgrimage destination on the west coast is the Paleokastritsa Monastery. It is also known as Moni Panagia Theotokou and is located on a peninsula right next to the village of Paleokastritsa. The beautiful monastery complex with its numerous cats is lovingly cared for by the monks who still live here. Magnificent bougainvillea blooms everywhere and offers fantastic photo opportunities.

The monastery garden, located behind the chapel, offers fantastic views of the Paleokastritsa coves. You can experience this special place of silence most authentically in the early morning hours, when the rush of holidaymakers is still limited

  • Opening hours Paleokastritsa Monastery: daily 7 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. – 8 p.m., donations welcome

West of the complex below the tavern, a trail also leads to a metal cross. Here you will find another great viewpoint that is worth a detour.

Motorboat rental in Corfu

Since most of the beaches cannot be reached on foot due to the cliffs in the northwest, there is hardly a better way to explore the beautiful bays and grottos around Paleokastritsa by motorboat.

motorboot mieten korfu griechenland
Hidden bays can only be reached by motorboat

For us personally, the motoboat tour was one of the most beautiful excursions on Corfu and in addition even a premiere, as we have never been on the sea with our own motorboat. In Greece, you don’t need a license/license to rent a motorboat up to 30 hp.

Our motorboat experience in Corfu

We have opted for the reputable Corfu motorboat supplier, Corfuexploreboats, and were completely satisfied with the handling and instruction. Christos and his friendly team have a lot of boats with different engines in their program.

Anchor in and into the water

Our Corfu motorboat was as good as new and really easy to use due to the automatic transmission. After a detailed briefing including a nautical chart, we went out to sea. We got a freezer for our own drinks and snacks.

Especially from noon, the cliffs are beautifully illuminated and the bays look like paradise. You can approach over 10 different beaches and various grottos and caves and anchor in front of them at many points. Our personal bathing favorite was the Stelari Beach.

stelari beach korfu motorboot
Stelari Beach

The turquoise blue sea water is so clear that you can see down to the bottom. The only downer on the west coast: Even in July, the water hardly gets warmer than 18 degrees. This is due to the underground freshwater springs of Corfu and the open sea to the west. But with a daytime temperature of over 35 degrees, you can endure the “icy refreshment” quite well 🙂

→ Here you can find more information about the motorboat rental for Corfu: Corfuexploreboats

After the boat trip or sightseeing of Paleokastritsa, do not miss the La Grotta Bar. The cool beach bar was built directly into the rock and offers cozy seating on several levels. Chilled beach sounds are playing in the background.

From a diving board or the surrounding rocks, you can take a dip in the cool water. Drinks and snacks are a bit more expensive, but the view and the ambience are really unique.

#10 Things to do in Corfu in the west

Between Glyfada and Paramonas in the west of Corfu Island, the narrow coastal road winds through traditional villages, down to wide sandy beaches and past pretty monasteries.

For drivers, the steep inclines and tight curves always pose challenges and so after an adventurous journey you are usually happy to have arrived at your destination at the end.

Mass tourism has increased in Glyfada and so beaches and popular sights are usually heavily frequented in July and August. If you want to discover the region at your leisure, then it’s best to stop by in the low season if possible.

The west coast of Corfu offers a wide choice of sandy beaches for a relaxing day by the sea, including Glyfada, Kontogialos, Gyaliskari and Agios Gordios. Except for Gyaliskari Beach, which was very clogged with seaweed and looked a bit unkempt, we liked all the beaches.

korfu straende konotgialos beach
Beach day at Kontogialos Beach

Unfortunately, the parking situation on most beaches is chaotic and the access roads are sometimes adventurous. It is best to plan more time here and, if necessary, walk a few meters to the beach.

Myrtiotissa Monastery

Coming from Paleokastritsa, the first stop takes us to the beautiful Corfu Monastery Myrtiotissa. The 16th century church is located directly above the coast and the only monk still living here enjoys a magnificent view every day.

However, the priest should not look too far down, because directly below the monastery is the picturesque cove of Myrtiotissa, on whose beach people still bathe, as God created one. Nudist lovers are in the right place here.

For the visit to the monastery, however, you should take a few pieces of clothing with you and cover your shoulders and knees. If you don’t want to make the steep and challenging approach down to the bay, then it’s best to park above on the Elia Tavern.

  • Opening hours Myrtiotissa Monastery: daily 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. – 8 p.m., free admission – donations welcome

Emperor’s Thrones Corfu

A magnificent vantage point, both during the day and in the evening, is the Emperor’s Throne at Pelekas. Even the German Emperor Wilhelm II loved this hill on Corfu, from which you can enjoy a fantastic panoramic view of the entire island.

Agios Gordios Beach

At Agios Gordios Beach, located behind the Bar Black Rocks, there is an old shipwreck and an extensive stretch of wild beach where you can swim a little more undisturbed. The strong swell in the winter of 2020/21 has put a strain on the Corfu Shipwreck so that only fractions of it remain. So the sight is not nearly as spectacular as with the Zakynthos Shipwreck.

Nevertheless, a walk along the wild coast is worthwhile. Above the hamlet of Aspes there is a great viewpoint (Aerostato). Not far from Agios Gordios you can take a detour to the original villages of Kouramades and Sinarades. Here you will get an insight into traditional Corfiot village life.

Corfu Insider Tip: Agios Nikolaos Beach

One of our most beautiful swimming spots on Corfu was the small beach at the chapel of Agios Nikolaos, just behind the village of Paramonas. A dirt road leads up to a vineyard and then turns into a trail that descends to the coast.

Korfu Straende agios nikolaos paramonas beach
The chapel of Agios Nikolaos near Paramonas

Once at the bottom, in addition to the gleaming white chapel, a fine sandy beach and crystal-clear, warm water await you. The former harbor bay has now silted up and you can walk meters into the sea. The clean beach is natural and offers little shade, so you should bring an umbrella, snacks and drinks for a day of swimming.

The rustic Tavern Stribodikeio in the village of Kalafationes is the place to go for authentic Corfiot cuisine. The ambience in the courtyard is very cozy and only a few tourists get lost here. The landlord only speaks Greek, the menu with delicious homemade mezedes is also available in English.

#11 Korission Lake

South Corfu is usually left to the side, used by most travellers during their Corfu Holidays. Many do not accept the long journeys from the north or centre of the island. This region of Corfu also has some natural beauties and culinary experiences in store.

For example, the nature reserve of the Korission Lagoon in the southwest of the island. The lake, which is connected to the sea, was once artificially created by the Venetians and is now an important resting place and breeding area for migratory birds in Corfu.

On a hike of several hours on Corfu (approx. 4-5 hours, information here: komoot), Lake Korission can be circumnavigated. The path is not always clearly visible and leads partly over hill and dale. In the evening, when the sun goes down, the atmosphere is particularly beautiful.

The sand dunes of Issos Beach and the kilometre-long sandy beach of Halikounas are located directly behind the Korission wetland. These two beautiful swimming spots on Corfu are ideal if you’re looking for a free spot, even in the high season.

Chlomos and Boukari

Particularly worth seeing in the southeast of the island is the beautiful mountain village of Chlomos. With its winding streets and its old buildings, it invites you to take a short walk. At the northern end of the village you have a wonderful view over the east coast at the Balis Taverna.

From Chlomos it is worth taking a detour to the coastal hamlet Boukari. Numerous fish taverns have settled here. Even though there is no real beach section in Boukari, the atmosphere is very idyllic with the kaikis sailing in the sea and the jetties.

Notos Beach

Compared to the southwest, the eastern part of the island with its narrow pebble beaches could not necessarily inspire us.Nevertheless, you will find a real gem with a picturesque coastline in the vicinity of the Notos Beach. The botanical garden of the Panorama Tavern was an absolute Corfu highlight for us.

Between banana trees and tropical plants, you immediately get a jungle feeling. At the bottom of the jetty you can refresh yourself in the crystal clear water. Sunbeds are also provided by the tavern. Only the mosquito spray should not be forgotten. Mosquitoes also feel at home in such lush vegetation.

Visiting Mavroudis Olive Oil

The Venetians were responsible for introducing olive cultivation to Corfu, where they grew the olive tree on a large scale. Corfu thus looks back on a centuries-old tradition and is home to olive trees that are up to 500 years old. Most of them are still family-owned today.

Traditional olive oil production

You can get an interesting insight into the history of olive oil in Corfu and its production from the Mavroudis family near Chlomatiana. The family is now in its third generation of olive oil and owns over 2,500 trees, most of which are still harvested by hand.

The entertaining guided tour of the Olive Museum and the production facility as well as a subsequent tasting of the individual varieties is free of charge. Mavroudis Extra Virgin Olive Oil is simply excellent due to its particularly fresh and fruity taste.

Nice island souvenir: olive oil from Mavroudis

We also found the gourmet olive oils with added herbs and spices, such as basil, garlic or pepperoni, particularly tasty. We have stocked up on several canisters of olive oil, including 3 L of extra virgin olive oil from Corfu at a fair price.

  • Opening hours Mavroudis Olive Oil: daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

#12 Day trip to Paxos

Caribbean bays, picturesque villages and countless olive groves – the two neighboring islands of Paxos and Antipaxos in the south of Corfu are rightly a real tourist magnet.

To get a first impression of the two small Ionian islands, we decided on a boat trip to Paxos and Antipaxos. The so called Paxi day tour starts either from Corfu Town or from the port of Lefkimmi in the south of Corfu.

paxos tour hoehlen blue caves
Blue Caves on Paxos West Coast

First stop are the impressive Sea Caves of Ypapanti and other Blue Caves on the west coast of Paxos. Depending on the incidence of light, the sea shimmers in a magical shade of blue. Unfortunately, every one of the numerous excursion boats enters the caves, so that the beautiful scenery of musty marine diesel is somewhat clouded.

The second stop is at the Caribbean-like coves of Antipaxos, particularly Voutomi Bay. The turquoise blue color of the water here is simply spectacular and you would like to jump in immediately if it weren’t for hundreds of other boats that completely clog up the beautiful bay in the high season. So the paradisiacal swimming stop is more like a huge overcrowded paddling pool.

voutomi beach antipaxos
Antipaxos: Caribbean Sea at Voutomi Beach

The third and last stop of the day tour is the main town of Gaios or the coastal hamlet of Lakki on Paxos, depending on your choice. We have opted for the neat harbour town Gaios. You can stroll along the promenade wonderfully and the narrow alleys and pastel-colored houses let you operate the camera shutter button several times.

paxos gaios korfu ausfluege
Entrance to the port of Gaios on Paxos

In the harbour pier, there is usually a lot of activity when the numerous excursion boats arrive. If you want to get away from the crowds, you can enjoy your time at Creperie Il Capriccio. Here, a friendly team serves delicious savoury and sweet crepes, waffles, pancakes and ice cream. We would have liked to stay longer, but after two hours it was time to return to Corfu. You can book the tour directly via GetYourGuide*:

➲ To the guided boat trip to Paxi*

Our conclusion on the day trip to Paxos

A worthwhile boat tour if you want to get a first impression of Paxos and Antipaxos and have the opportunity to do this excursion in the quiet low season. Especially in July and August, you unfortunately have to deal with completely overcrowded boats. The tour is then more like a mass event. Alternatively you can also visit the mainland villages Parga and Syvota by boat. Find out more on GetYourGuide*:

➲ To the tours to Parga and Syvota*

Alternatively, you also have the option of planning one or two nights on Paxos and using the normal passenger ferry from Kamelia Lines from Corfu town. The old speedboat Flying Dolphin, on the other hand, was advised against us several times. You should book your accommodation on Paxos well in advance, especially in the high season.

Island hopping Corfu – Paxos – Lefkada

In the summer months, the ferry AZIMUT (AZIMOYT) of the ferry company Sail Ionian operates from Corfu to Lefkada and even, depending on availability, up to Zakynthos. The small speedboat Lefkada Palace even runs via Paxos to Lefkada. So you can even go island hopping from Corfu.

Lianelia Boutique Village House – Argyrades

For our island tours in the south, the small holiday home in the lively village of Argyrades was the ideal starting point. Owner Konstantinos has lovingly renovated the family property. The result is a tasteful Villa in Corfu on two floors, suitable for solo travelers and couples who want to explore Corfu on their own and like to self-cater.

The kitchen is well equipped and the holiday home is air-conditioned, so that it is also pleasant to sleep in the attic. In front of the house there is a narrow alley where you can have breakfast in the morning.

Romantic dinner in Corfu

Ambelonas Winery & Restaurant by Vasiliki Karounou is located 8 km from Corfu Town on a hill in the middle of vineyards. From the idyllic farm, the view widens over the valley floor. The entire team of Vasiliki is passionate about their work and there was no more romantic place for us in Corfu to enjoy a dinner for two.

In the historic farm buildings right next door, you can buy homemade products and get an insight into the wine and olive oil production of pre-industrial times. The Ambelonas is part of the Slow Food movement and focuses on local, organic products.

Cooking class in Corfu

Eggplant pie with island herbs, red wine bread with warm goat cheese and slow-cooked lamb with risotto. What Vasiliki Karounou serves is pure enjoyment and lets you dive deep into cuisine of Corfu Island.

For us it was the first cooking class in Greece and we couldn’t have imagined a more beautiful location and better cooking coach. The cooking school starts in the afternoon with a short explanation of the history of the Ambelonas winery and the origins of Corfiot cuisine, then it goes straight to the cutting board and food processor.

Getting around Corfu

The island of Corfu with an area of 585 km² extends from north to south about 60 km and from east to west max. 30 km. If you want to see a lot of the island during your vacation, we recommend having your own wheeled vehicle.

korfu mietwagen tour ausfluege
Rental car tour across the island

Because of the greater distance, a small car is preferable to a quad or scooter, as these are more suitable for shorter distances and should be well motorized due to the gradients. On the portal Discover Cars* you will find cheap offers for car hire on Corfu and you can check prices directly:

➲ To the rental car booking*

The bus network on the island of Corfu is also well developed, but the bus takes some time to get from A to B. For shorter connections, especially from the capital, the bus in Corfu is a good alternative to a rental car. For longer distances, the public buses are rather less suitable during the holiday.

In Corfu there is a Corfu City Bus, which serves the city area and the surrounding districts and which serves the intercity buses called Corfu Green Buses, which connects the capital with the north and south. You can find timetables for the two lines here:

  • Timetables for Corfu intercity buses: Green Buses timetable

Getting to Corfu

The island of Corfu is served directly by numerous German airports in the season from April to October, including Condor, Ryanair, easyjet, Eurowings and Aegean. Corfu Airport »Ioannis Kapodistrias« (CFU) is located 4 km south of Corfu Town. We use the portal Skyscanner* to show us suitable flights to Corfu:
