Zeus, the father of the gods, already made a name for himself on the largest island of the Cyclades and spent a large part of his youth on Naxos. Whether it was because of the dream beaches or the culinary offerings probably remains his secret.

»Naxos is located in the heart of the Aegean Sea and is the most scenically diverse island on the Cyclades.«

naxos griechenland portara chora kykladen
Portara: The landmark of Naxos

Behind the barren hills of the enchanting Chora of Naxos hides a green variety of plateaus with olive groves and fertile valleys, interrupted by the mountain massif of Zas.

On a hike through the lush nature of Naxos Island you will come across historical treasures in many places, such as ancient ruins, Byzantine chapels and Venetian residential towers. And that’s exactly what makes the island of Naxos so magical.

Meanwhile, in the south-west of the island is the beach paradise of the Cyclades. Golden sandy beaches with turquoise blue sea give rise to a Caribbean feeling and make Naxos the perfect destination for beach vacationers.

We had two weeks to explore the island of Naxos with its almost 18,000 inhabitants. We remember the warmth and hospitality of the locals particularly well. What else makes the island so unique, you can find out in our personal Naxos Highlights:

#1 Stroll through Naxos Chora

Naxos Town, also Chora is for us one of the most beautiful cities on the Cyclades. Take at least one day to discover the picturesque old town with its medieval alleys and the Venetian Kastro.

The capital of Naxos with its 7,000 inhabitants is a prime example of Cycladic architecture and a photogenic gem. It’s fun to drift through the narrow streets and always pass beautiful corners that are suitable for great holiday photos.

South of the waterfront there is a large free parking lot where you can park your vehicle. From here we head north past the Naxos Bakery where you can stock up on delicious Greek snacks.

The port of Naxos Chora

You can get a first impression of Naxos Town on a walk along the Naxos waterfront. Numerous taverns and cafés invite you to linger here. Behind it, the sea of white houses stretches up a hill to the Kastro, the oldest district of Chora.

At the northern end of the promenade are the ticket office of the Naxos Bus Company (KTEL), the bustling main port and the Portara as the island’s landmark.

Head to the Kitron shop Promponas in the maze of alleys of the old town. On the left hand side it goes into the Old Market Street, the main mile of the old town with many pretty shops, boutiques and souvenir shops.

The market alley leads you to the popular taverns Apostolis and Metaxi Mas, past a rustic mini market and a traditional bakery up to the mighty castle complex of the Chora.

Venetian Kastro of Naxos Town

The fortress from the 12th century is the only surviving castle complex of the Venetians outside Italy. Once upon a time, the ancient Acropolis of Naxos stood on the highest elevation of the Chora. Over the centuries, it was destroyed and its stones were used as building material during the Byzantine Empire and the late Middle Ages.

You enter the fortress area via one of the two remaining castle gates, the Trani Porta in the north or the Paraporti in the south. Twelve towers are said to have once existed within the mighty Kastro walls, although today only the Krispi Tower at the North Gate has been preserved.

The Kastro towers 30 m above the city

In the castle district of Naxos Town it is pleasantly quiet, especially at lunchtime. Once upon a time, Kastro district inhabited around 400 people. Hard to imagine, because today the medieval alleys seem deserted.

In addition to the homes of former noble families, there are several studios, workshops, museums and community centres in the fortress. In the central square of the Kastro you will reach the Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral.

It is wonderful to linger within the fortress walls in the Avaton 1739. From the large roof terrace of the café-bar you can enjoy a great view of the southern district of Chora.

💡 Naxos Accommodation Tip: It is worth spending a few nights directly in the old town of Naxos to experience the cozy atmosphere in the evening. More information can be found on Booking.com*: Accommodation Chora*

The most beautiful view of Naxos Town

You can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the capital including Portara from the Xilokastro Hill, which is about 2.5 km behind the capital. Even from afar, the view falls on the snow-white rock chapel of Agios Theologos (Theologaki), from which you can experience a magnificent sunset.

The view is at least as beautiful on the Chrysostomos Monastery, just a few meters further up the asphalt road. The fortress-like complex was built in the 17th century from a Venetian defensive tower and can be visited in the morning and afternoon.

#2 Portara Naxos: Landmark of the island

When you arrive by ferry, you can already see the six-metre-high ancient temple gate on the offshore islet of Palátia. A visit to Portara can be wonderfully combined with a day trip to Chora.

Via a 100 m long breakwater dam you can reach the Portara of Naxos. On stormy days, the spray whips over the dam so much that the short distance almost becomes a gauntlet.

The sunset at Portara is simply magical and, as befits a top attraction, there is a pilgrimage atmosphere here almost every evening.

In ancient times, a large Temple of Apollo was situated here. To this day, archaeologists still disagree about why the building was never finished. It is certain that the marble gate was erected at the beginning of the 6th century BC.

During the course of construction, a replanning took place and the gigantic temple portal was turned 180 degrees. The two side pieces alone weigh 20 tons each!

The individual marble components of the gate come from the Flerio Quarries. In the region around Flerio there are still unfinished building elements of the temple today.

In addition to the gate, there are a few pillar stumps and other marble fragments on the site. Presumably, many temple components were used over the centuries for the construction of houses by the Chora.

If you want to avoid the crowds in the evening, you should visit the Portara of Naxos at lunchtime. Due to the siesta in Chora, there are fewer tourists on the site. Below the Portara there is a small café with friendly service, but according to the location high prices.

#3 Dream beaches of Naxos

Naxos is the bathing paradise of the Cyclades and offers over 20 km along the southwest coast fantastic beaches and bays of fine golden sand and turquoise blue sea.

Everyone will find their ideal bathing spot, because from the perfectly organized beach with extensive water sports and lifeguards, to the lonely natural bay, the island of Naxos has everything to offer.

Agia Anna Strand Naxos Badeurlaub
Crystal clear waters at Agia Anna Beach

You are also spoilt for choice when it comes to taverns and beach bars in the southwest. Like a string of pearls, they line up with the popular beaches of Agios Prokopios to Plaka.

In the north of Naxos, the beaches made of sand-gravel mix are a bit rougher depending on the wind and do not seem as paradisiacal as in the south. Nevertheless, it is wonderful to relax on the beaches of Hilia, Mikra and Kampos.

On the southeast coast, things are generally a bit quieter and you will find some bays that you can usually enjoy all to yourself in the low season.

In this article, we will tell you our 11 most beautiful bathing spots on the island as well as suitable hotels right by the sea: Naxos Beaches

Hotel ruins at Cape Alyko

After a long day at the beach, it is worth taking a short detour to the hotel ruins directly on the Cape. In the 70s, the construction of a hotel complex began here, but it was never completed due to the lack of a building permit.

Lost Place Naxos Hotelruine Graffiti Kap Alyko
Graffiti art in the ghost hotel

Since then, this Naxos Lost Place is a popular place for graffiti artists who have created enchanting works of art here. Even though the hotel ruins of Alyko have long since ceased to be an insider tip, it is still exciting to discover the individual graffiti in the abandoned building.

💡 Cedar Forest of Naxos: The Alyko Peninsula not only has beautiful beaches to offer, but also one of the largest cedar forests in Greece. The cedar trees, including the so-called juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus), are partly over 300 years old and home to various small animal and bird species. In addition, the cedar plants contribute to the preservation of the unique sand-thin landscape around Alyko through their deep roots.

#4 Island tour through Naxos’ center

In the Heart of Naxos there are many beautiful villages and historical sites that you can explore on your own on a day trip by rental car. While driving you can find out what you should keep in mind in this article: Car rental in Greece

Behind the village of Galanado the road leads to the Plateau of Tragea, the largest olive-growing area in the Cyclades. The plain looks like a sea of silvery-green olive groves framed by mighty mountains.

Halki: Picture-book village of the Tragea Plain

About 16 km from Chora is the village Halki, which was once the capital of Naxos and an important trading center. Today, Halki is an important transport hub and a popular destination for day tourists.

In Venetian times, a blacksmith family lived in the village, which was dedicated to the processing of bronze, which is how the village of Chalki (Greek: chalkos: bronze) got its name.

A walk through the small village with its photogenic alleys and neoclassical houses is entertaining. On the northern outskirts of the village above the school, you can use the public car park and walk into the village from there.

At the church of Panagia Protothronos from the 9th century you will reach the center of Halki on the right. The cobbled main street, which is overgrown with beautiful bougainvillea, offers wonderful photo opportunities. Again and again, small squares invite you to linger.

Chalki Naxos Dorfplatz Taverne
Idyll under vines in the village square

Right at the entrance of the alley is the weaving room of Maria Marinaki, which has been producing traditional textiles such as bags and tablecloths here for decades. It’s worth taking a look at her shop with her old loom, here we took a nice island souvenir with us.

Past the Vallindras Distillery we go to the pretty Platia, which is partly covered by a roof of vines. A narrow side street leads you from here back to the main road. For a short coffee break, a stop at the Kitron Cocktail Bar is worthwhile.

Vallindras was one of the first manufacturers in Naxos to produce the Naxos Kitro liqueur. Even today, you can visit the old distillery and traditional equipment in the premises in Halki. A free guided tour including liqueur tasting is also offered.

Historic Naxos Olive Grove Hike

In front of the marmairo art gallery in Halki, a side road leads out of the village on the left and turns into a footpath that takes you into a beautiful landscape of ancient olive groves.

Via hiking trail no. 4 you can reach the Byzantine church in 10 minutes Agios Georgios Diasoritis. It dates back to the 11th century and contains well-preserved frescoes. (Open from 19.07.-19.09.: Tue., Thu.-Sat., 10 a.m.-3 p.m.)

From the church, the path continues over a dried up riverbed to the church of Taxiarchis Rachis. The chapel itself is not very spectacular from the outside, but from here you have a magnificent view over the Tragea plateau.

The circular route continues along the old village of Monitsia, which seems to be extinct. Further south at the church of Agia Marina, we return to Halki. The approx. 2 km long Byzantine tour is entertaining and takes about 30 minutes.

Filoti: Mountain village below Zas Mountain

The largest village in the centre of Naxos has almost 1,500 inhabitants. The white house cubes of Filoti are impressively located at an altitude of 400 m directly below the mighty Zas massif.

Into the maze of alleys of Filoti

You can start a walk through Filoti at the northern entrance to the village. From the free parking lot you follow the mostly busy main road to the Platia Gefira, the main square of Filoti with many taverns and cafes.

To the left of the Platano Café, steps lead up to the pretty church of Panagia Filotitissa. The entire alley as well as the church forecourt offer countless beautiful photo motifs. From the church you follow the alleys south to the Pyrgos Barozzi, a defensive tower from the 18th century.

In the southern part of the village is the Filoti Folklore Museum of the friendly couple Maria and Nikos. Along the alleys you will find various shops from the early 20th century, including a blacksmith’s shop, a tailor’s shop, a workshop, a hairdresser and an impressive grocer’s shop with Greek products from times gone by.

💡 Ascent to the highest mountain of Naxos: At the chapel of Agia Marina, between Filoti and Danakos, the hike to the summit of the highest mountain of Naxos begins. Parking is available along the street. The Monopati to the top of the Zas is about 2.5 km long and the ascent takes 1-2 hours, depending on your walking speed.

Through the Marble Center of Naxos

After visiting the villages of Filoti and Halki, it is worth continuing through the villages Moni, Kinidaros and Myli back to Naxos Chora. The tour leads through the heart of the Tragea plateau past the historic church of Panagia Drosiani (see #7 Historical Treasures) and along the impressive marble quarries of the island.

Naxos Marmor Steinbruch Sehenswuedigkeiten Kinidaros

In Kinidaros, a short stopover is a good idea. The place is still considered the center of marble mining today. Every year, up to 5,000 tons of Naxos marble (type “Alexander”) are quarried and exported.

Kouroi: Youth statues from Naxos

From Kinidaros we continue towards Melanes. Not far from the village of Myli, a road branches off to a popular Naxos highlight. In the middle of a green valley lies the Kouros of Flerio or Melanes.

The Kouros of Flerio

The reclining marble statue, which represents a young man, is about 6 m high and was apparently never completed. It dates back to the 6th century BC and is one of three Kouroi statues that can still be seen on Naxos.

A little above in the quarry of Flerio lies another statue of a young man from Archaic times. At around 5.5 m, the Kouros of Potamia or Farangi is the smallest kouros on Naxos. Like its brothers, it was never completed because the legs and feet had been damaged during the transport of the statues.

The Kalamitsia Ghost Monastery

South of Melanes, a gravel road takes you to the ruins of the Jesuit Monastery of Kalamitsia, which was founded in the 17th century. The hidden complex has not been inhabited for over 150 years and is therefore left to decay.

Embedded in lush green nature, the place still has a special charm. At the entrance in front of the building, even the old monastery spring still splashes. The enchanted-looking main house and several outbuildings, including a pigeon house, delight Lost Places fans. Entering the dilapidated facility is at your own risk.

#5 Excursion to the lonely north

In the North of Naxos a wildly romantic landscape with deep gorges and lush vegetation awaits you. In some places, agriculture is carried out on the centuries-old terraces, and sleepy mountain villages unexpectedly appear that invite you on a discovery tour.

You should plan a whole day for the trip to the north of the island. Ideally, you are traveling by rental car, after all, you cover 40 km from Naxos Town to Apollonas in the far north.

Koronos Naxos Bergdorf Ausflug Tipps

From Chora, follow the main road towards Kinidaros. From here it goes in numerous curves past the ghost village of Sifones and the 50-soul village of Keramoti up into the Zas Mountains.

In spring, we recommend a hike from Keramoti to the Routsouna Waterfalls (2 km, one way). Once on the saddle, pass the Stavros Keramoti church on the left until you reach the mountain village of Koronos, where time seems to have stopped.

Visit to the emery village of Koronos

Koronos is located at about 600 m directly below the second highest mountain of Naxos (997 m), the Koronos of the same name. Together with Keramoti and Apiranthos, the town is one of the so-called Emery villages (Smiridochoria).

Until the 1960s, emery stone was mined here, among other things for the use of abrasives (“sandpaper”). The mining had such great economic significance for the Greek state that the young men of the region were not drafted into the military (World War 1).

Today’s inhabitants of the emery tunnels

Even if Koronos is regularly visited by bus tours in the high season, the village has remained very authentic. During a long walk over numerous steps and through many medieval arches, you can explore the two halves of the village, which are steeply located on the mountainside.

In front of the whitewashed houses there are all kinds of flower pots, colourful shutters and doors set colourful accents and colourful bougainvillea climbs up the facades.

Village Life in Koronos

The place is one of the most water-rich regions on Naxos, so there are several well houses in Koronos that are worth seeing, which still supply the 600 inhabitants with drinking water today.

Viticulture has a long tradition on Naxos. Many families have their own vineyards, so you should ask for local wine in the taverns. At the bottom of the village is the pretty village square, which resembles a botanical garden. Two taverns provide for the physical well-being (Our tip: Matina & Stavros).

Detour to Liones

At the foot of the elongated valley of Koronos lies the fishing village of Liones. On the way down you will pass some emery tunnels, some of the old loading stations are still there. The scenery is impressive and well worth a detour.

fischerdorf liones naxos ausfluege kykladen
Even in the height of summer, Liones remains a tranquil place

Two solid fish taverns are located in the village, and a pebble beach invites you to refresh yourself. In the sleepy nest, a few holiday accommodations have now been established. Above the village you can enjoy a magnificent view of the bay of Liones.

Apollonas: Idyllic fishing village in the north

If you follow the main road of Koronos further north, you will pass the tiny towns of Skado and Mesi. Alternatively, there is also a detour via the mountain village Koronida to Apollonas, where the only gas station in the north is located. After countless curves, you will see the bay of Apollonas.

The small coastal town in the far north of Naxos exudes Greek flair with its fishing boats and cozy taverns directly on the shore. Once upon a time, the Port of Apollonas was a loading station for marble quarried in the area around Koronida (Komiaki).

apollonas naxos kykladen griechenland
Apollonas Harbour Pier

In the meantime, Apollonas has become a popular destination for bus tours and a refuge for individual tourists, who stay here in the guest rooms. Behind the sandy beach, one restaurant follows the other with a focus on fish and seafood.

The main attraction in the area, however, is the Kouros of Apollonas. The marble statue of a young man measures 10.5 m and is therefore the largest that can currently be admired on Naxos.

The colossus is located above Apollonas and was for us personally one of the most impressive sights of Naxos. Steps lead from the street up to the sleeping giant. The unfinished statue is about 2,500 years old and probably represents the Greek god Dionysus. The weight of the Kouros of Apollonas is estimated at 80 tons!

Coffee & Olive Oil in Eggares

We take the 36 km long way back to Chora along the west coast. The scenically interesting route leads, among other things, past the Pyrgos of Agia and the Faneromeni Monastery.

Pyrgos von Agia Naxos Tower Ayia

The rugged beaches along the northwest coast are mostly natural and covered by coarse gravel and sand. Even though they are not as picturesque as their counterparts in the south, they have the great advantage of being often deserted even in midsummer.

Shortly before Chora, the main road leads through the green valley of Eggares (also Engares). It’s worth making a short stop here before heading back to the capital.

The focal point of the village is the oversized blue and white church Kimissis Theotokou. Right next to it is the Olive Museum of Eggares, which is exhibiting one of the oldest olive presses of Naxos. The premises, including numerous equipment, have been extensively restored in recent years and can be visited free of charge.

The friendly staff will give you a short, informative tour of the Olive Museum, followed by a tasting of the various olive oils. In the shop you can stock up on more treats. The cosy outdoor area invites you to enjoy a coffee or a small snack.

#6 Naxos South: From Moutsouna to Panermos

Another worthwhile day trip takes you along the east coast from Moutsouna to the hamlet of Panermos. Wonderful beaches, wild nature and a lot of seclusion from the tourist hustle and bustle await you.

From the mountain village of Apiranthos, the road winds its way down the mountains to Moutsouna. At the pretty blue and white chapel of Agias Kiriakis a short stop right at the roadside is worthwhile. From here you can enjoy a magnificent panorama of the east coast all the way to the neighboring island of Donousa.

Along the route, you may notice the old cable car. Baskets full of emery that was mined in the quarries around Apiranthos and Koronos still hang here.

Arrived in the coastal hamlet of Moutsouna a monument on the waterfront promenade commemorates the time of emery mining on Naxos. Directly at the harbour, there are even two old loading cranes of the former mining company.

Further south, fantastic sandy beaches and bays, such as Psili Ammos and Marathitis Beach, await you, which invite you to take a short swim.

Panermos: Lunch break under palm trees

The road ends after 18 km at the Bay of Panermos, also called Panormos. Magnificent palm trees line the beach section of sand-gravel mix. The entrance to the crystal clear sea is shallow and therefore also wonderfully suitable for families with children.

A canteen provides visitors with cool drinks and simple snacks. The parking lot directly on the beach can be used free of charge, but since it is on private property, a small donation is welcome.

Stone seating was created under the palm trees. We still remember our lunch break at this idyllic place well – pure deceleration!

#7 Historical treasures on Naxos

Naxos is one of the most historically interesting islands in the Aegean. The settlement of the Cycladic island dates back to the late Neolithic Age. Archaeological finds in the Chora district of Grotta are dated to the middle of the 4th millennium BC (Grotta-Pelos culture). The finds are in the Archaeological Museum of Naxos exhibited. Enclosed we present a small selection of historical sites on Naxos that we visited during our stay.

Churches on Naxos

Naxos has an astonishing number of historic churches from the Byzantine period (395 to 1204 AD). After Christianity was declared “non plus ultra” in the 4th century, the construction of large churches also began on Naxos.

Ancient sanctuaries were converted into places of worship, initially only with a semicircular altar extension (apse), later ancient temples were completely demolished or rebuilt. So you can still discover many monasteries, churches and chapels on Naxos today, which contain ancient marble elements.

In the heart of Naxos, on the Tragea plateau, are most of the Byzantine and Venetian churches on Naxos, some with ancient frescoes from the 7th, 8th and 9th centuries. The region is also called »Mystras of the Aegean«, alluding to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mystras on the Peloponnese Peninsula.

💡 Naxos Insider Tip: The German-Greek couple Astrid and Nikos have written a lot of information about the island on their website, as well as a very detailed report on the churches on Naxos: Byzantine churches

Panagia Drosiani at Moni

The Panagia Drosiani (Greek: Church of the Fresh All-Saints) is considered the Byzantine model church par excellence. It is located just outside the village of Moni and is embedded in picturesque olive groves of the Tragea plain.

Panagia Drosiani: A Byzantine Temple

The imposing church consists of several churches that are connected to each other and were built in different eras, the oldest of which dates back to the 6th century.

In 1964, extensive restoration measures began, during which wall paintings were uncovered inside, probably from the 6th or 7th century, including Jesus as a young and old man (man and God at the same time).

From the main road, a trail goes up to the left in front of the church, from the top you have a good view of the complex. Admission is free, a donation is welcome. Photos are not allowed!

Cave Church of Panagia tis Spilias

About 5 km from the Temple of Demeter, at the foot of the mountain Profitis Ilias, there is a cave church worth seeing. In the spring, the area in front of the Panagia tis Spilias, along the small stream, and the space in front of the cave are covered with clover. The brick gate directly in front of the cave is impressive. Inside there are two altars with numerous icons and votive tablets.

The two-kilometer hike starts about 500 m behind the Bazeos Tower (dirt road on the left) and takes you around the Profits Ilias mountain with beautiful views of Mount Zas.

After 20 minutes, a sign (“Pros Panagia tis Spilias”) shows the way to the church. From the starting point, you can also visit the rock monastery of Kaloritsa, which is enthroned on the mountainside. The way there is very steep, the view from the top fantastic.

Pyrgi: Venetian Towers on Naxos

From the 13th century onwards, crusaders occupied the island of Naxos. As early as 1207, the Venetian Marco Sanudo obtained a feudal system on Naxos and divided the island in favor of Catholic nobles.

In order to protect themselves from friction with other crusaders, pirates and the oppressed population, castle-like towers were built over the centuries. Defensively designed, they once had no windows and doors on the ground floor. More than 50 pyrgi (Greek: towers) were built on Naxos until the 18th century.

The Barozzi Tower in Filoti

The defensive towers served as agricultural and manorial centres of the feudal lords. Even after the Ottoman conquest by Barbarossa in 1537, feudal farming remained.

Around the towers were all kinds of agricultural land, as well as oil mills and water mills. Some well-preserved pyrgi, some with the characteristic roof spikes, can still be admired, including the Towers Barozzi and Bazeos, as well as Gratsias and Zevgolis.

The oldest tower is located in Pyrgi Kourounochori, it dates back to the 14th century by the Sanudo family and, like most other defensive towers, is now privately owned.

Cheimarros Tower (Pyrgos Chimarrou)

Another tower in the south of the island is one of the oldest buildings on Naxos. However, it does not come from the Venetians, but was built as early as the 3rd century BC. To protect it from decay, it is supported by scaffolding.

The 15 m high tower is one of the best preserved buildings of its kind. In ancient times, there was at least one of these defensive towers on almost every island, which served as a warning system. You will reach the Tower of Chimarrou via a good asphalt road from Filoti.

Restoration of the Chimarrou Tower

The Hellenistic round tower consists of meter-thick light-colored marble blocks, which were seamlessly assembled without mortar. Presumably, the building once had five floors and a total area of about 250 square meters.

Around the Cheimarros Tower there is an old settlement with ruined houses and two churches (including Zoodochos Pygi). The area is fenced, but the gate is not locked. From the tower, a gravel path continues to the remote hamlet of Kalantos.

Demeter Temple of Sangri

On a hill in the middle of the fertile plain of Sangri you will find the partial restoration of a Demeter temple from the 6th century BC. The original temple was converted into a basilica in the years after Christ, but it was largely destroyed in the Middle Ages.

On the grounds of the Temple of Sangri there is a small museum with finds from the region. A visit is particularly worthwhile for those interested in history. Since 2021, an entrance fee of €4 has been charged.

#8 Products from the island of Naxos

Naxos is the agricultural centre of the Cyclades and produces numerous foodstuffs, both for their own consumption and for export to the surrounding islands.

The focus is on various types of fruit and vegetables, olive oil, cereals, dairy products and meat from livestock farming. Naxos is known for its tasty potatoes, which you can get served in local taverns.

A real speciality is the cheese from Naxos. A tasting in the cheese dairy of Naxos Town, named Tyrokomia Koufopoulos is worthwhile here. The display is lavishly stocked with numerous hard and soft cheeses made from cow’s, goat’s and sheep’s milk. The Graviera and the Kefalotiri from Naxos are particularly popular.

The tasting of 10 different types of cheese, including a snack platter with appetizers and a glass of wine, takes about 40 minutes and costs €15 per person.

Kitro: The lemony liqueur from Naxos

Each and every one of the many Greek Islands produces its own spirit. On Naxos, it is the liqueur Kitro, which is made from the leaves of the citron (cedrat).

Since the kitro is produced exclusively on Naxos, it may be marketed as a liqueur with a legally protected origin. The production volume is limited by the only 2,000 citron trees that grow on the island and thus there is hardly any supra-regional distribution.

Kitro: A specialty from Naxos

The Kitro from Naxos is available in three different versions, but they hardly differ from each other in terms of taste. In addition to a rather sweet green-colored liqueur, there is also a stronger clear kitro and a yellow-colored variant with the highest alcohol content.

The Promponas Distillery from Naxos Chora and Vallindras from Halki are the most famous producers of the Kitro Naxou. Both also run sales outlets including tastings in the respective villages, so you can take a nice island souvenir home with you.

The small farm on Naxos

On the farm »I Mikri Farma Naxos« between the villages of Vivlos and Sangri, you will get an extraordinary insight into the diversity of Naxo’s agricultural products. More than 100 (medicinal) plants as well as fruit and vegetables are grown biodynamically by the Naxiot Kostas, and he has even cultivated sugar cane and passion fruit.

Kostas is an organic farmer with heart and soul

In addition to seasonal products, homemade cheese, honey and wooden island souvenirs can also be purchased. The prices are very fair. A visit is worthwhile because of the extremely charismatic nature of Kostas!

  • Honey & Cinnamon Cocktail Bar, in Chora
  • Stou Vasilarakou, in Kinidaros

Getting around Naxos

With a length of only 32 km from north to south, it is easy to underestimate the distances on Naxos. Due to the mountainous and rugged landscape and the winding roads, you have to plan at least 30-40 minutes of driving for only 20 km.

With a rental car on Naxos you have the opportunity to visit the beautiful mountain landscape and remote villages and beaches outside of Chora and the southwest coast. In Naxos Chora you will find numerous car rental companies. For the high season, it is advisable to reserve a vehicle in advance, e.g. via the portal Discover Cars*:

➲ To cheap car rental offers*

The bus network on Naxos is very well developed and reliably connects all major towns and the beaches of the southwest coast with each other. There are 10 different lines that go to almost the entire island and at ticket prices between €1.60 and €6.20.

FAQ about the island of Naxos

Are there direct flights to Naxos?

No, there are no direct flights from Germany, Austria, or Switzerland. Naxos does have a small domestic airport, but it only connects to Athens. So you have to travel via Athens or Mykonos and then continue to Naxos either by domestic flight or ferry. Since 2023, international flights have occasionally landed on the neighboring island of Paros, from where it is only a 30-minute ferry ride.

Is Naxos a beautiful island?

For us, Naxos is one of the most diverse Cycladic islands. In the southwest, you will find beautiful golden sandy beaches, green hills with quaint mountain villages, and Byzantine churches and Venetian fortified towers in between. The imposing Mount Zas towers over everything. With the beautiful Chora of Naxos Town and the Portara, almost everyone falls in love with Naxos at first sight. We particularly remember the warmth of the locals.

When is the best time to visit Naxos?

May/June and September/October are great times to visit Naxos, with air temperatures of 22-25°C, warm sea (up to 24°C) and fewer tourists. In July/August it gets very hot (over 30°C), which is perfect for swimming. However, the beaches around Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna are then packed. April is a great time for hiking when the wildflowers are in bloom. However, many taverns are still closed at this time of year.

Is Naxos an expensive island?

No, Naxos is significantly cheaper than Santorini or Mykonos. As the agricultural center of the Cyclades, the island produces many of its own foods, including potatoes, cheese, olive oil, and seasonal vegetables. Prices in the taverns are fair (except in Naxos Chora) and there is accommodation to suit every budget. Hotels cost an average of €60-210 per night, depending on the season. Prices are lowest in the off-season (October).

How long does the ferry crossing from Athens to Naxos take?

The crossing by high-speed catamaran from the port of Piraeus to Naxos takes 3.5 to 4 hours. By car ferry, it takes about 6 hours. From Mykonos, the crossing takes only 40 minutes. Naxos is also connected to many other Cycladic islands, making it a great starting point for island hopping in Greece. From Athens Airport, take a taxi, bus, or metro to the ferry port of Piraeus. It is best to book tickets online in advance.

How many days are enough on Naxos?

You should stay at least five to seven days on Naxos, or better yet ten to fourteen days, to immerse yourself in the island. Naxos is the largest Cycladic island and there is a lot to discover: beaches in the southwest, mountain villages in the center, the secluded north with Apollonas, and the east coast with Moutsouna. We spent two weeks on Naxos the first time and never got bored. For a pure beach vacation, 4-5 days are enough, but the island has so much more to offer.

What are the must-see sights on Naxos?

The Portara of Naxos at sunset, the Chora of Naxos with its Venetian castle and Old Market Street, the dream beaches in the west from Agios Prokopios to Plaka, the mountain village of Chalki with the Vallindras distillery, the Kouros of Apollonas, Filoti below Mount Zas, the Panagia Drosiani church complex, and Panormos Bay with palm trees in the far southeast. The hotel ruins at Cape Alyko with their graffiti art are also cool; we took some great photos here.

Where are the most beautiful beaches on Naxos?

The entire west coast below Naxos Town is gorgeous: Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Plaka Beach—over 20 kilometers of golden sandy beaches with turquoise blue water. Mikri Vigla, which is also popular with surfers, and the secluded beaches at Alyko are particularly beautiful. In the southeast, Panormos and Psili Ammos are gorgeous, the latter of which is usually deserted. The north coast has sandy-pebble beaches and is rougher due to the Meltemi north wind, but still charming.

Can you explore Naxos without a car?

Theoretically, yes. The Naxos bus network has about ten lines and reliably connects all major towns and the southwest coast. A ticket costs between €2 and €6.50. However, a rental car gives you much more flexibility on Naxos if you want to explore the mountain villages, remote beaches, and the secluded north and east. The distances on Naxos are greater than you might think. Due to the winding mountain roads, it often takes 30 to 40 minutes to cover 20 kilometers. We definitely recommend renting a car for Naxos.
