FAQ Travel Guide Island Hopping Cyclades

Important questions and answers about the island hopping guide

Can I go island hopping in Greece with kids?

Island hopping in the Cyclades is a wonderful activity to do with children. Plan to spend a little more time on each island so that the little ones don't get overwhelmed by the pace of travel and have enough time to explore. Incidentally, a few weeks of parental leave is ideal for island hopping in the Cyclades.

Does the island hopping travel guide also include maps?

For each Cycladic island, we have included a simple map showing the island's highlights, major towns, and ferry and airports. An overview map of the Cyclades, including the routes described, is also included. We have created detailed navigation maps for each island via Google MyMaps, including all highlights, beaches, and restaurants. You can access the maps via a QR code.

Are the most important sights really included in the travel guide?

Our Cyclades travel guide lists all the major sights on the eight islands covered. These include the Portara of Naxos, the island of Delos near Mykonos, and Akrotiri on Santorini. In addition to these highlights, we have described many other places worth seeing. Our personal insider tips and excursions away from the crowds are also included in the travel guide.

Are there also Cyclades excursions described that can be done in bad weather?

Don't worry! If you plan your Cyclades island hopping during the tourist season (May - October), there will only be a few rainy days per month. From July to September, there is usually not a single drop of rain. Most of the Cyclades sights and excursions described are purely outdoor activities. Nevertheless, we have an indoor tip (e.g., museum) for almost every island.

Do I need a rental car for island hopping?

We answer this question and many other topics in detail in our island hopping travel guide. A rental car is not always necessary to explore the Cyclades. Smaller Cycladic islands (including Antiparos, Mykonos, and Syros) are ideal for exploring by scooter or quad bike, and some can even be explored by bicycle. On every island, you will find at least one rental station for cars and other vehicles at the harbor. In some cases, bicycles and e-bikes are also available for rent.

How much money should I budget for the tours and admission?

For many of the tours and highlights described in our island hopping travel guide, you don't need any additional budget or pay any entrance fees. These are mostly individual explorations. As a rule, you will need a vehicle (car, quad bike, or scooter) to get from A to B. Bus fares in Greece are relatively inexpensive.

Can I also explore the islands by bus?

The bus network on Mykonos and Santorini is well developed and suitable for some excursions. However, the connections are not flexible enough. On all other Cycladic islands, it is advisable to rent a car—even if it is only for a few days of your vacation.

Do I need any other travel guides for the Cyclades?

Our travel guide contains lots of information and travel tips for a 14-day trip through Greece. Our travel guide can even be used for more than one Cyclades island hopping trip, as two routes are described. The individual islands can be combined as you wish. If you want to stay longer on the islands of Santorini or Naxos, you should buy a travel guide for the respective island, for example from Lonely Planet.

When will the island hopping guide be available as a printed book?

A printed version of our travel guide is available regularly—but only while supplies last. Sign up for our newsletter and we will inform you about the delivery date. Alternatively, our e-book is available for immediate download at any time. It can be read as a PDF file on almost all devices.

I have a specific question about the island hopping guidebook for the Cyclades.
