Longtime fans of Greece already know the country has more to offer than just its islands. Away from the tourist hotspots, the mainland hides true treasures that bear no resemblance to the pictures in travel brochures. One example is Metsovo, an idyllic village in the Pindus Mountains<\/strong>. In July and August, it’s the perfect place for a summer getaway, while in winter it’s regularly blanketed in a thick layer of snow.<\/p>\n

Metsovo is home to one of Greece\u2019s most popular ski resorts<\/strong>\u2014yes, you heard that right! And so, in the fall and winter, this mountain village is a must-visit for Greeks. At an altitude of over 1,100 meters, you\u2019ll find gray stone houses instead of the Cycladic style; air conditioning is usually unnecessary here, though on some summer nights, the fireplace is occasionally used.<\/p>\n

We spent three days thoroughly exploring Metsovo and the surrounding area\u2014in June, mind you\u2014with daytime temperatures around 24 degrees and nighttime temperatures around 12 degrees. We visited wineries, breathed in the alpine air on excursions into the surrounding countryside, and saw fairy-tale waterfalls. Above all, we enjoyed the fact that tradition is still alive here, rather than everything being turned upside down for international tourists.<\/p>\n

Where is Metsovo?<\/h2>\n

Metsovo is located in northern Greece,<\/strong> almost exactly halfway between the city of Ioannina and the famous Meteora monasteries, at an elevation of 1,156 meters. The mountain village is part of the Epirus region and is picturesquely nestled in the lush green slopes of the Pindus Mountains, Greece\u2019s longest mountain range. There\u2019s no sign of the sea here\u2014it takes over two hours to reach the coast.<\/p>\n

\"\" Those who come to Metsovo are seeking alpine mountain air, endless hiking trails, and Greek mountain culture, which is quite different from life by the sea. Metsovo is fairly easy to reach, as the modern Egnatia Odos highway\u2014Greece\u2019s most important east-west corridor\u2014runs through several tunnels into the mountainous region, making Metsovo a convenient stop along the route between Igoumenitsa and Thessaloniki.<\/p>\n
