We had never heard of this Cycladic island before. Before our first trip to Syros, we had no idea how much the island would captivate us \u2014 so much so that we have now visited several times.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"color: #00aad9;\"><em>&#8220;With its two eye-catching towns of Ermoupoli and Ano Syros, the island is architecturally unique. Syros has something mysterious about it and is very different from other islands. This is indeed the case on many of them, but not on Syros, at least not in the city of Ermoupoli.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Syros, with its capital Ermoupoli, is the <strong>administrative centre of the Cyclades<\/strong> and is lively in all seasons. Tourism has not played a major role for the island so far. In midsummer, you will mainly encounter mainland Greeks and only a small international crowd.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We were immediately warmly welcomed by the locals and felt at home from the very first moment. It is the lightness and joy of the people here that warms your heart and makes you feel truly welcome.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Take a few days to explore this Cycladic island. We have spent two winters here and are sharing our favourite <strong>Syros highlights<\/strong> along the way.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"Ermoupoli\">#1 Ermoupoli: Capital of Syros<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When the ferry from Piraeus enters the port of Ermoupoli (also known as Hermoupolis), you will immediately be greeted by the two <strong>prominent city hills<\/strong> with their churches.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6180\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6180\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6180 size-full\" title=\"syros ermoupolis churches\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/syros-ermoupolis-churches.jpg\" alt=\"syros ermoupolis churches\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Entrance to the port of Syros<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>majestic capital<\/strong> of Syros looks enchanting from afar and stands in complete contrast to the barren mountain landscape. Countless caf\u00e9s and restaurants invite you to linger, and cats doze in the afternoon sun. You almost feel like a nobleman as you stroll through. Their rooftop terraces offer stunning views of the Aegean Sea. Right next door is another Ermoupoli attraction. The <strong>Apollon Theatre<\/strong> of Syros was modelled on the Milanese scale and still hosts regular performances today.<\/p>\n<h3>Cultural Capital of the Cyclades<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Syros is the secret <strong>cultural jewel of the Aegean Sea<\/strong>! On the hill of the old town of Ano Syros sits the Catholic church of Agios Georgios. From Ermoupoli, many steps lead up to another world. The labyrinth of picturesque alleys looks as though it comes from a time long past. This is where people first settled on Syros during the Middle Ages. Caf\u00e9s and restaurants only open gradually in May or June and close as early as September. Usually, the end of the Greek summer holidays also marks the end of the season in Ano Syros. By October, all facilities in the village have closed and the village falls back into a deep sleep.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h3>Bar Mile of Ano Syros<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Behind the Vamvakaris Museum begins the bar and pub mile of Ano Syros. In midsummer, it is usually impossible to squeeze through here, as all the outdoor seats are taken and crowds of party-goers make their way along the main street. Outside of the Greek holiday season, however, you can enjoy lovely evenings here with a cool drink.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6236\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6236\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6236 size-full\" title=\"insel syros ermoupolis urlaub\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/insel-syros-ermoupolis-urlaub.jpg\" alt=\"insel syros ermoupolis urlaub\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6236\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View of the harbour entrance and the sea<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Trendy bars like the <em>Theosis Bar<\/em> place small tables directly in the alleys, where you can enjoy your cocktail on cushioned seats and philosophize about life. There&#8217;s a magical atmosphere in the air. Other bars like <em>Tsagkaradiko<\/em> offer a breathtaking view of Ermoupoli lit up in the evening from their roof terraces.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the side streets, you will find traditional taverns with delicious Greek mezedes (tip: Apanochoritissa) as well as modern fusion cuisine that will make foodies&#8217; hearts beat faster (e.g. Hygge Ano Syros).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16367\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16367\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16367\" title=\"Syros Restaurant Ausblick Ermoupoli\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/Syros-Restaurant-Ausblick-Ermoupoli.jpg\" alt=\"Syros Restaurant Ausblick Ermoupoli\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16367\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View of the city of Ermoupoli<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Markos Vamvakaris and the Rembetiko<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the entrance of the main alley is the Museum of <strong>Markos Vamvakaris.<\/strong> The famous bouzouki player and guru of rembetiko was born in Ano Syros. Admission to the museum costs around two euros. A film about the life and work of the rembetiko artist is shown in Greek with English subtitles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For fans of Greek music, the museum is definitely worth a visit. Markos&#8217; probably <strong>most famous song, &#8220;Frangosyriani&#8221;,<\/strong> is well known to lovers of Greece. The melody is a real earworm. In the song, Vamvakaris sings about a childhood love for a Catholic girl from Syros.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6195\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6195\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6195\" title=\"syros markos vamvakaris rembetiko\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/syros-markos-vamvakaris-rembetiko.jpg\" alt=\"syros markos vamvakaris rembetiko\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6195\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monument of Markos Vamvakaris<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the top of the hill of Ano Syros sits the Catholic <strong>church of Agios Georgios<\/strong>. From here you have a magnificent view of Ermoupoli and the Orthodox church on the opposite hill. Between rugged cliffs, one small beach bay follows another. The closer you get to Ermoupoli, the more holidaymakers you&#8217;ll find here during the summer months. A <strong>goat trail<\/strong> leads from the end of the asphalt road over a ridge. At a gap in the stone wall, the path splits in two. One leads to the northernmost tip of Syros. Due to the risk of <strong>forest fires<\/strong>, open fires are strictly forbidden here.<\/p>\n<h3>Hike to the ancient site of Grammata<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From Americanou Beach, an inconspicuous trail leads directly along the coast to the bay of Grammata (= letters). Even from a distance you can see the bright marble slabs gleaming along the shore. People have been leaving their mark here since Roman and Byzantine times, <strong>immortalised in stone<\/strong>.
