After almost a decade of traveling to Greece, it was high time for us to finally discover the islands of the Ionian Sea. Our first stop: Corfu! For four weeks we explored so many Corfu sights<\/strong> from north to south, enjoyed the Mediterranean charm and made warm friendships.<\/p>\n

For those who only know the islands of the Aegean Sea, Corfu is a completely different Greece: instead of white cube houses, you see colorful, magnificent villas, and the otherwise barren landscape is replaced by lush green pine forests.

Slender cypresses tower over the wooded slopes, with countless olive groves and vines crowded in between. Corfu is a paradise for nature lovers, who want to enjoy the lush flora of the green island in the Ionian Sea<\/strong> in their full glory.<\/p>\n

In addition, Corfu<\/strong> is a Greek bathing paradise with an almost endless variety of beaches. Lonely bays with white pebbles and rugged rocky cliffs in the north alternate with golden sandy beaches and dune landscape in the south. Everywhere the sea shimmers in the most beautiful shades of blue.<\/p>\n

With more than 40,000 inhabitants, the capital of Corfu, also called Kerkyra<\/strong>, is the economic and cultural center of the island. The Venetian influence is unmistakable in Kerkyra\u2019s architecture. The Venetians ruled the island of Corfu for more than 400 years and left their mark. Corfu Town is home to two impressive fortresses from that time period, both of which are open to the public. Since 2007, the historic old town of Corfu has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

#2 Vlacherna Monastery and Mouse Island<\/h2>\n

About 6 km south of the capital in the Kanoni district, you will discover one of the most popular photo motifs on the island. Vlacherna Monastery<\/strong> (Panagias Vlachernon) is not missing in any travel catalogue and is worth a visit at any time of the day. The 17th-century church sparkles gleaming white on a headland in the sea, directly behind it is the runway of the airport.<\/p>\n

Via a concrete footbridge you can visit the Vlacherna monastery and then take a kaiki to the neighboring Pontikonisi Island<\/strong> (5 min crossing 3 \u20ac p.p.). On the island is the church of Sotiros with a kiosk and a handicraft shop. Turtles and peacocks hide in the dense bushes of the island, which is also called Mouse Island.<\/p>\n

Mon Repos Park<\/h3>\n

Today, the Park of Mon Repos<\/strong>, the former summer residence of the British royal family, is somewhat overgrown and unkempt. Prince Philip (\u2020 2021 at 99), husband of former British Queen Elizabeth II (\u2020 2022), was born on the estate. In 1994, the Greek state acquired the complex and renovated parts of Mon Repos Castle.<\/p>\n

Those interested in history will be interested in Mon Repos Castle<\/strong> and its royal museum. Meanwhile, bathing enthusiasts can refresh themselves in the beautiful bay with a jetty to the south-east of the complex.<\/p>\n
