Naxos does have a small domestic airport, but it only connects to Athens. So you have to travel via Athens or Mykonos and then continue to Naxos either by domestic flight or ferry. Since 2023, international flights have occasionally landed on the neighboring island of Paros, from where it is only a 30-minute ferry ride.

Is Naxos a beautiful island?

For us, Naxos is one of the most diverse Cycladic islands. In the southwest, you will find beautiful golden sandy beaches, green hills with quaint mountain villages, and Byzantine churches and Venetian fortified towers in between. The imposing Mount Zas towers over everything. With the beautiful Chora of Naxos Town and the Portara, almost everyone falls in love with Naxos at first sight. We particularly remember the warmth of the locals.

When is the best time to visit Naxos?

May/June and September/October are great times to visit Naxos, with air temperatures of 22-25°C, warm sea (up to 24°C) and fewer tourists. In July/August it gets very hot (over 30°C), which is perfect for swimming. However, the beaches around Agios Prokopios and Agia Anna are then packed. April is a great time for hiking when the wildflowers are in bloom. However, many taverns are still closed at this time of year.

Is Naxos an expensive island?

No, Naxos is significantly cheaper than Santorini or Mykonos. As the agricultural center of the Cyclades, the island produces many of its own foods, including potatoes, cheese, olive oil, and seasonal vegetables. Prices in the taverns are fair (except in Naxos Chora) and there is accommodation to suit every budget. Hotels cost an average of €60-210 per night, depending on the season. Prices are lowest in the off-season (October).

How long does the ferry crossing from Athens to Naxos take?

The crossing by high-speed catamaran from the port of Piraeus to Naxos takes 3.5 to 4 hours. By car ferry, it takes about 6 hours. From Mykonos, the crossing takes only 40 minutes. Naxos is also connected to many other Cycladic islands, making it a great starting point for island hopping in Greece. From Athens Airport, take a taxi, bus, or metro to the ferry port of Piraeus. It is best to book tickets online in advance.

How many days are enough on Naxos?

You should stay at least five to seven days on Naxos, or better yet ten to fourteen days, to immerse yourself in the island. Naxos is the largest Cycladic island and there is a lot to discover: beaches in the southwest, mountain villages in the center, the secluded north with Apollonas, and the east coast with Moutsouna. We spent two weeks on Naxos the first time and never got bored. For a pure beach vacation, 4-5 days are enough, but the island has so much more to offer.

What are the must-see sights on Naxos?

The Portara of Naxos at sunset, the Chora of Naxos with its Venetian castle and Old Market Street, the dream beaches in the west from Agios Prokopios to Plaka, the mountain village of Chalki with the Vallindras distillery, the Kouros of Apollonas, Filoti below Mount Zas, the Panagia Drosiani church complex, and Panormos Bay with palm trees in the far southeast. The hotel ruins at Cape Alyko with their graffiti art are also cool; we took some great photos here.

Where are the most beautiful beaches on Naxos?

The entire west coast below Naxos Town is gorgeous: Agios Prokopios, Agia Anna, Plaka Beach—over 20 kilometers of golden sandy beaches with turquoise blue water. Mikri Vigla, which is also popular with surfers, and the secluded beaches at Alyko are particularly beautiful. In the southeast, Panormos and Psili Ammos are gorgeous, the latter of which is usually deserted. The north coast has sandy-pebble beaches and is rougher due to the Meltemi north wind, but still charming.

Can you explore Naxos without a car?

Theoretically, yes. The Naxos bus network has about ten lines and reliably connects all major towns and the southwest coast. A ticket costs between €2 and €6.50. However, a rental car gives you much more flexibility on Naxos if you want to explore the mountain villages, remote beaches, and the secluded north and east. The distances on Naxos are greater than you might think. Due to the winding mountain roads, it often takes 30 to 40 minutes to cover 20 kilometers. We definitely recommend renting a car for Naxos.

*Support our blog Greece-Moments

In this post, you will find affiliate links marked with an asterisk (*).
