You can only reach this location by ferry from Chora Sfakion, Sougia, or <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/paleochora-crete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paleochora<\/a>. More information on this is available in Chapter #2.<\/p>\n<h3>Best time to visit the Samaria Gorge<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you\u2019d rather not navigate the hiking trail through the gorge shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands of other people\u2014especially in the height of summer\u2014you should set out early. When it opens at 7 a.m., it\u2019s still pleasantly quiet, and you\u2019ll have the gorge almost to yourself.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"anreise\">Samaria Gorge by Rental Car<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Coming from the highway from <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/chania-crete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chania<\/a>, take the exit at Vamvakopoulo; from here, it\u2019s about 50 minutes to the <strong>northern entrance of the Samaria Gorge<\/strong>, called Xyloskalo. The first section of the road winds past numerous orange groves and Limni Agias (a great spot for a day trip!).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shortly after the village of Fournes, the road winds its way up the mountains in a series of switchbacks, offering fantastic views of Chania and the coast at every turn. Here you\u2019ll find a few supermarkets, taverns, and guesthouses. The road runs along the plateau, and after 5 minutes you\u2019ll arrive at the entrance to the Samaria Gorge. Nikolaos &#8211; Samaria: 230 km (3.5 hrs)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u203a Ierapetra &#8211; Samaria: 270 km (4 hrs)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u203a Sitia &#8211; Samaria: 305 km (5 hours)<\/p>\n<h3>By bus to the Samaria Gorge<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From Chania, KTEL public buses run to the village of Omalos in one hour, and there are even <strong>buses all the way to Xyloskalo<\/strong> at the main entrance. Departure times in the morning are at 5:00 a.m. or 7:45 a.m. A one-way ticket costs about \u20ac7. The bus stop is located right at the starting point of the gorge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After hiking through the gorge, you can return to Chania from both Sougia (6:15 PM) and Chora Sfakion (6:30 PM). Both locations are served by ferry from the gorge\u2019s endpoint in Agia Roumeli. From Sougia, the bus takes about 1.5 hours to reach Chania; from Chora Sfakion, it takes just under two hours.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u2192 You can view current bus schedules at: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-ktel.com\/en\/services\/online-ticket-reservation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">KTEL Chania<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>By boat to the Samaria Gorge<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can reach the <strong>end of the Samaria Gorge<\/strong> by ferry from the coastal towns of Chora Sfakion, Sougia, or Paleochora. The latter two towns are located west of the Samaria Gorge, so it\u2019s worth traveling here if you\u2019re staying near Kissamos and Chania. Chora Sfakion is recommended for travelers coming from <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/rethymno-crete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rethymno<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/heraklion-crete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Heraklion<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18669\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18669\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18669\" title=\"Chora Sfakion Kreta Suedkueste\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Chora-Sfakion-Kreta-Suedkueste.jpg\" alt=\"Chora Sfakion Kreta Suedkueste\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18669\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coastal town of Chora Sfakion<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Traveling by boat to the Samaria Gorge<\/strong> is particularly ideal for a short hike to the famous rock gates of the gorge (see Chapter #2: Easy Hike).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During the season, many small ferries and taxi boats operate to Agia Roumeli. The largest ferry company<em>, ANENDYK,<\/em> even transports cars. The departure times for ferries to the Samaria Gorge from May through October are as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Chora Sfakion to Samaria Gorge (Ag. Roumeli)<\/strong>: Mon\u2013Sun at 10.30am and 1.00pm, single journey = approx. \u20ac17 (approx. \u20ac25 with a return ticket)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sougia to Samaria Gorge (Ag. Roumeli)<\/strong>: Mon\u2013Sun at 9.15 am, Wed 9.15 am and 4.10 pm, and Thu\u2013Sun at 7.50 am and 9.15 am, single journey = approx. \u20ac17<\/li>\n<li><strong>Paleochora to Samaria Gorge (Ag. Depending on weather conditions, the start of the new season may be delayed due to heavy rain in the spring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even in summer, the <strong>Samaria Gorge may be closed<\/strong> due to poor weather conditions and the risk of landslides. Please check the current weather conditions and possible closures before your trip.<\/p>\n<h3>Complete Samaria Hike (Xyloskalo to Agia Roumeli)<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Independent travelers can drive a rental car to just before the main entrance of the Samaria Gorge. Parking at the Samaria National Park in Crete costs \u20ac5 per day. We recommend arriving early to secure a parking spot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The hike down into the gorge starts from here. If you\u2019re traveling a long way, we recommend staying overnight in Omalos. A national park fee of \u20ac10 per person is charged at the entrance. This section offers fantastic views of individual peaks of the White Mountains of Crete, including Psilafi (1,984 m) and Gingilos (2,080 m). You can take your first break at the stone church of Agios Nikolaos (14th century).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18675\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18675\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18675\" title=\"Samaria Schlucht Gefaehrlich Wanderung Kreta\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Samaria-Schlucht-Gefaehrlich-Wanderung-Kreta.jpg\" alt=\"Samaria Schlucht Gefaehrlich Wanderung Kreta\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The descent should not be underestimated<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From here on, the hike becomes more pleasant. About an hour after the Agios Nikolaos Church, you\u2019ll reach the old <strong>settlement of Samaria<\/strong>. The former residents were forcibly relocated in 1962 as part of the establishment of the national park.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today, the site houses the national park\u2019s administrative buildings, a first-aid station, as well as drinking water sources and restrooms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You then follow the riverbed, crossing it repeatedly, and gradually pass through the three large rock gates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Shortly after the <strong>Christos rest area<\/strong>, you\u2019ll reach the last rock gate and the narrowest point of the Samaria Gorge (3 m), the \u201cSideroporta\u201d (Iron Gates) with its hundred-meter-high cliffs. From here, it takes about an hour (2.5 km) to reach the sea at Agia Roumeli.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18696\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18696\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18696\" title=\"Samaria Tickets Eintritt Nationalpark Kreta\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Samaria-Tickets-Eintritt-Nationalpark-Kreta.jpg\" alt=\"Samaria Tickets Eintritt Nationalpark Kreta\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18696\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The destination in sight<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u2192 Current information and <strong>opening hours for the Samaria Gorge<\/strong> are available on the official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samaria.gr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National Park website<\/a> and on the <a href=\"https:\/\/samaria-gorge.gr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">gorge\u2019s information page<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>How do I get back to my rental car?<\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To return to the starting point in Xyloskalo, you must take the ferry from <strong>Agia Roumeli to Sougia<\/strong>. From the tranquil coastal town, you can take a taxi (price starting at \u20ac50 per taxi, travel time approx. 50 min) or board one of the KTEL buses (price approx. \u20ac6, travel time approx. 1.5 hours, departures at 6:18 PM and 8:16 PM).<\/p>\n<p>\u2192 <strong>Samaria Taxi Service<\/strong>, our recommendations: <a href=\"https:\/\/sougiataxi-meletis.gr\/de\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sougiataxi-Meletis<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sougiataxi.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sougiataxi-Vittorakis<\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Keep in mind that if you don\u2019t start your five-hour <strong>descent from Xylokastro<\/strong> until after 12:00 PM, and the last ferry has already left Agia Roumeli at 5:30 PM, you\u2019ll need to spend the night in the coastal town.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Below are the departure times for the ANENDYK ferry from Agia Roumeli (Samaria Gorge):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Samaria Gorge (Ag. The 2-km-long hiking trail (2.5 hours round trip) begins at the port of Sougia and leads along the lush green gorge.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After about 15 minutes, you\u2019ll reach an impressive overhanging rock face called the Lissos Rainbow Wall, which could easily be found in Australia.
