Just before the summit, you\u2019ll reach the impressive <strong>Panagia Thalassitra Church<\/strong> (1839), which is arguably one of the most photographed churches on Milos. Here, the volcanic caves and grottos along the Milos coast, with their natural ramps, served as garages. Later, the caves were fitted with wooden sheds painted to match the color of the boats.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the centuries, numerous boathouses sprang up, especially along the north coast. When fishing with small boats (kaiki) was no longer profitable, the boathouses fell into disrepair. This makes Klima one of the smallest villages on Milos, but also one of the most visited. Coming from Plaka, follow the \u201cCatacombs\u201d signs through the village of Tripiti, but be careful\u2014the main road is very narrow. Just before the free parking lot, you\u2019ll pass a marble statue of a woman, the Venus of Milos.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33783\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33783\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33783\" title=\"Katakomben von Milos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Katakomben-von-Milos.jpg\" alt=\"Katakomben von Milos\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33783\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Catacombs of Milos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The catacombs were established in the 1st century AD as <strong>burial sites for the first Christians<\/strong> and were used for burials until the 5th century; today they are among the most significant early Christian monuments in all of Europe. In some of the 1.5- to 2.5-meter-wide burial niches, original inscriptions dating back nearly 2,000 years, as well as the Christ monogram, are still preserved. Currently, only a portion of the burial chambers is accessible. Yet it has not been on Milos for 200 years. Unaware of the significance of his find, he sold it for a \u201csong\u201d to French art dealers. Today, the <strong>Venus stands in the Louvre in Paris<\/strong>, where it is arguably one of the absolute highlights.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Greek government has been trying in vain for decades to bring the statue home. A replica of the famous <strong>statue of the goddess Aphrodite<\/strong> stands by the roadside on the way to the catacombs. The farmer Georgios\u2019s field is said to have been located directly below this spot. The replica is definitely a great photo opportunity!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33780\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33780\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33780\" title=\"Theater von Milos Tripiti\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Theater-von-Milos-Tripiti.jpg\" alt=\"Theater von Milos Tripiti\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33780\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ancient Theater of Milos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From here, it takes about 5 minutes to reach the ancient <strong>theater of Milos<\/strong>, which was a cultural part of the ancient city of Melos (from 1000 BC). Not much remains of the old island capital, which was located directly above Klima, except for the theater with its marble seating rows and a bastion from Roman times. However, admission is free.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the prominent hill above stands the <strong>Chapel of the Prophet Ilias<\/strong>, which features clearly recognizable ancient marble fragments embedded in its structure. With a population of over 1,200, it is the largest town on the island and was founded by refugees from Crete (Sfakia) in 1824. Much of it seemed too touristy to us, and we couldn\u2019t find a quaint tavern. At least in the upper part of town, there are charming alleys and white churches (including Agios Haralambos) that make for lovely photo opportunities.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33785\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33785\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33785\" title=\"Adamas Lagada Beach Milos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Adamas-Lagada-Beach-Milos.jpg\" alt=\"Adamas Lagada Beach Milos\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View of Lagada Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unfortunately, two significant historical monuments in the town are no longer accessible: the <strong>Iamitika Loutra thermal springs<\/strong> located at the harbor (closed since 2020) and the World War II bunkers below Adamas. The latter provided shelter for the German occupiers and the local population during Allied bombing raids and were occasionally used for exhibitions.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33788 aligncenter\" title=\"Adamas Milos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Uferpromenade Restaurants\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Adamas-Milos-Sehenswuerdigkeiten-Uferpromenade-Restaurants.jpg\" alt=\"Adamas Milos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Uferpromenade Restaurants\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Visit to the Milos Mining Museum<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Valuable <strong>raw materials have been mined on Milos<\/strong> since the Stone Age. As early as 8,000 years ago, the most important export was the jet-black, glass-like rock obsidian (see box), from which tools and weapons were made and fragments of which have been found in many parts of the Mediterranean region.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33794\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33794\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33794\" title=\"Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Milos Mining Museum Kykladen\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Sehenswuerdigkeiten-Milos-Mining-Museum-Kykladen.jpg\" alt=\"Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Milos Mining Museum Kykladen\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33794\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Milos Mining Museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the millennia, other minerals have been mined, so much so that one could say <strong>mining is the soul of Milos<\/strong>. The industry is in full swing, with old and modern open-pit mines and spoil heaps scattered across the entire island. In addition to jewelry and talismans, tools and weapons were primarily crafted from this sharp rock, which is also known as volcanic glass. By law, obsidian is considered archaeological material and may not be removed. Along the way, you can see deposits of the distinctive obsidian, which stands out clearly as black spots against the beige-colored rock.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33796\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33796\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33796\" title=\"Obsidian Insel Milos Adamas\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Obsidian-Insel-Milos-Adamas.jpg\" alt=\"Obsidian Insel Milos Adamas\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Obsidian vein near Adamas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On a pristine beach, there is a French cemetery commemorating the Crimean War (1853\u20131856) and a small brackish lake from which bubbles rise, a sign of volcanic activity on Milos. After a short climb, the metal <strong>Adamas Lighthouse<\/strong> comes into view. The curved harbor bay, which you can already see from the parking lot upon arrival, looks like a postcard scene. Right at the entrance to the village is the <em>Kantina Oasis<\/em>, which offers cool drinks and delicious freddo with a magnificent view. The striking blue-and-white <strong>Zoodochos Pigi Church<\/strong> is a real eye-catcher; at the time of our visit in early May, the interior was undergoing restoration. The striking, moon-like coastline is located in the north of the island, just about 5 km from the port town of Adamas. Picturesque white houses in the Cycladic style line both sides of a long, narrow bay.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33813\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33813\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33813\" title=\"Apollonoia Milos Pollonia Kykladen\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Apollonoia-Milos-Pollonia-Kykladen.jpg\" alt=\"Apollonoia Milos Pollonia Kykladen\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33813\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Apollonia (Pollonia) offers holiday vibes<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the early season, Apollonoia was quiet; everywhere, people were preparing for the season, and only a few restaurants were open. <strong>Pollonia Beach<\/strong>, with its gently sloping, fine-sand shoreline lined with numerous tamarisk trees, was still deserted during our visit in late April.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33814\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33814\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33814\" title=\"Pollonia Beach Milos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Pollonia-Beach-Milos.jpg\" alt=\"Pollonia Beach Milos\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33814\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pollonia Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Right on the beach is Pollonia\u2019s playground, a true island idyll for the little ones. You can park your car in the large free car park directly behind the church and stroll along the small waterfront promenade, which is lined with restaurants. Make your way to the blue-and-white <strong>Agia Paraskevi Church<\/strong>, which was open during our visit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33816\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33816\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33816\" title=\"Pollonia Insel Milos Fischerboote\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Pollonia-Insel-Milos-Fischerboote.jpg\" alt=\"Pollonia Insel Milos Fischerboote\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33816\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">At the fishing harbor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Directly below lies the ferry pier with its colorful fishing boats. The Osia Methodia car ferry, which connects the islands of Milos and Kimolos, also docks here several times a day. Pollonia is the starting point for a <strong>day trip to the neighboring island of Kimolos<\/strong>, which seems to be just a stone\u2019s throw away.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pollonia is also perfect for a coffee break. We stopped by <em>Caf\u00e9 Deck<\/em> several times. The view from the terrace is simply magnificent, and you could linger there forever. On the other side of the bay lies a large holiday resort. Worth seeing here is the small blue-and-white <strong>church of Agios Nikolaos<\/strong>, which sits right by the sea.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33815\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33815\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33815\" title=\"Agios Nikolaos Kirche Pollonia Milos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Agios-Nikolaos-Kirche-Pollonia-Milos.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Nikolaos Kirche Pollonia Milos\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33815\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Agios Nikolaos Church<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Wine from the island of Milos<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just 500 m outside of Pollonia lies Milos\u2019s only winery. At the Kostantakis Winery, red, white, and ros\u00e9 wines, as well as a Retsina, are produced under the Spilia brand (Greek for \u201ccave\u201d). Over millions of years, wind and weather have carved several cave-like channels into the rock here, which you can explore at your own risk. Next to the Papafragas Caves lies <strong>Kapros Beach<\/strong>, which also features a rugged rocky landscape with sea caves and offers particularly interesting photo opportunities for photographers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The neighboring <strong>archaeological site of Phylakopi<\/strong> (dating from 3,000 BC), impressively situated on a rocky cliff directly above the sea and actually one of the island\u2019s most significant historical sites, was not open during our visit in 2024. Valuable ceramics and other artifacts are on display at the Archaeological Museum of Plaka.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33817\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33817\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33817\" title=\"Phylakopi Milos Antike St\u00e4tte Pollonia\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Phylakopi-Milos-Antike-Staette-Pollonia.jpg\" alt=\"Phylakopi Milos Antike St\u00e4tte Pollonia\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33817\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ancient site of Phylakopi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Visit to the Aggeria Mine<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those who spend several days on Milos and explore the island by rental car will truly realize the extent of mineral mining on Milos. Mining is actively underway in many places, with trucks constantly driving from the spoil heaps to the loading ports. Nearly 40 percent of the locals are directly or indirectly involved in mining.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33826\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33826\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33826\" title=\"Milos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Aggeria Mine\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Milos-Sehenswuerdigkeiten-Aggeria-Mine.jpg\" alt=\"Milos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Aggeria Mine\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33826\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aggeria Mine<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Milos is therefore not necessarily dependent on tourism. Nevertheless, the mining industry is open to visitors, and some spoil heaps can even be viewed up close if you\u2019re interested. These include the <strong>Aggeria Mine<\/strong>, located 5 km south of Pollonia, which is the largest bentonite mine in Europe and one of the largest in the world.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33827\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33827\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33827 aligncenter\" title=\"Aggeria Mine Insel Milos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Aggeria-Mine-Insel-Milos.jpg\" alt=\"Aggeria Mine Insel Milos\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33827\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mining Terraces<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was founded in 1968 and has been in continuous operation since the 1980s. The scale of the pit is immense, with countless terraces of multicolored rock layers extending down to emerald-green groundwater lakes. The mining company has set up a <strong>viewpoint overlooking the Milos Mine<\/strong> (GPS 36.739710, 24.503651).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33828\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33828\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33828\" title=\"Milos Mine Rohstoffe Bentonit\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Milos-Mine-Rohstoffe-Bentonit.jpg\" alt=\"Milos Mine Rohstoffe Bentonit\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33828\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bentonite on display at the mine museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With an annual output of 1.3 million tons, <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/greece-holiday\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greece<\/a> is the world\u2019s fifth-largest producer of bentonite. Bentonite is used as a lubricant and sealing material, as well as a binding agent, a base ingredient for many cosmetics, and as cat litter. Around the mine, you can expect oncoming trucks; please be sure to observe the driving restrictions!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33829\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33829\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33829\" title=\"Milos Bergbau LKW Stra\u00dfen gef\u00e4hrlich\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Milos-Bergbau-LKW-Strassen-gefaehrlich.jpg\" alt=\"Milos Bergbau LKW Stra\u00dfen gef\u00e4hrlich\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33829\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Watch out for truck traffic<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>#7 Day Trip to Kimolos<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While just a few years ago the two islands were worlds apart, Kimolos has, at least in the summer, come closer to the cosmopolitan bustle of Milos. During our visit in May, there was no sign of this yet; aside from mainland Greeks and a dozen French tourists, we experienced <strong>Milos\u2019s neighboring island<\/strong> from its quiet side.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33883\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33883\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33883\" title=\"Insel Kimolos Ausflug Milos Griechenland\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Insel-Kimolos-Ausflug-Milos-Griechenland.jpg\" alt=\"Insel Kimolos Ausflug Milos Griechenland\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33883\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chorio: Main town of Kimolos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Kimolos<\/strong> is also of volcanic origin and can be described as a miniature version of Milos. Aside from the main town of Chorio and the port of Psathi, there are only a few other settlements on the island. Kimolos is now well integrated into the Greek ferry network, with car ferries running to the island from Milos, Sifnos, and Folegandros.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From Pollonia, the <strong>Osia Methodia ferry departs for Psathi<\/strong> several times a day in 20 minutes (first departure around 7 a.m.). Those planning a day trip to Kimolos can quickly visit almost all of the island\u2019s highlights by rental car. As early as 79 AD, Pliny the Elder mentioned the island as a site for mining the bright yellow rock. Sulfur has not been mined since the 1960s, but the site of the large <strong>sulfur mine<\/strong> <strong>in the far southeast of Milos<\/strong> is open to visitors.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33831\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33831\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33831\" title=\"Thiorychia Milos Schwefel Mine Strand\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Thiorychia-Milos-Schwefel-Mine-Strand.jpg\" alt=\"Thiorychia Milos Schwefel Mine Strand\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33831\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Welcome to Thiorychia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even though the old facilities and steel structures are now rusting away, a visit to the <strong>Old Sulphur Mines Thiorychia<\/strong> is worthwhile not only for fans of abandoned places. The seaside setting, at the end of a long, wild valley, surrounded by red and yellow rock cliffs, is instantly captivating. The only downside: the dilapidated gravel road can only be navigated with a four-wheel-drive vehicle or a quad bike.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_33832\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-33832\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-33832\" title=\"Milos Jeep Ausflug Schwefel Mine\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Milos-Jeep-Ausflug-Schwefel-Mine.jpg\" alt=\"Milos Jeep Ausflug Schwefel Mine\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-33832\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Only a few cars make it all the way to the beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We even parked our four-wheel-drive Suzuki halfway and walked the last stretch. Once down below, the traces of sulfur mining from the past centuries are visible\u2014mining cars on rusty rails, old loading cranes and hoists, warehouses, and workers\u2019 barracks. We never would have thought that Milos is so diverse: the colorful boat garages, the bizarre rock formations of Sarakiniko, the wild, untouched west, the island\u2019s capital Plaka, which can be seen from almost everywhere thanks to its Kastro\u2014Milos has its own identity, and that\u2019s what makes an island for us. Add to that the truly lovely locals, who proudly showed us their beautiful island. What we didn\u2019t like: The trash problem and the generally high prices on the island (expensive restaurant prices without better quality). Overall, we found it difficult to find a truly good traditional taverna. We didn\u2019t discover the authentic Greece on Milos anymore; due to international tourism, much of it is already very cosmopolitan\u2014for example, traditional village structures with quaint kafenia are missing.
