The largest island of the Cyclades is not short on natural treasures \u2014 from the mountains to the sea, many surprises await you. Like many other holidaymakers, we quickly succumbed to the so-called “Naxos fever”. The dreamlike Naxos beaches<\/strong> contributed a large part to this.<\/p>\n

The great advantage of Naxos is that it is not yet overly crowded (except during the summer months), so there is always a quiet spot to be found along its 150 km coastline. That said, a rental car is recommended, as the roads on the island are not to be underestimated.<\/p>\n

Naxos beaches in the west<\/h2>\n

In the west there are plenty of good swimming spots, though around Naxos Town (Chora) options are quite limited. Grotta Beach<\/strong>, not far from the Portara of Naxos, is at best suitable for sunbathing \u2014 large pebbles make it difficult to enter the water, the waves can be strong, and a lot of flotsam washes ashore. When there is no wind, however, it can be a good spot for snorkelling.<\/p>\n

At Agios Georgios Beach<\/strong>, about 500 m south of the city, things look better \u2014 the swimming here is good. However, it is a typical city beach, with the sea of houses of Naxos-Chora’s new town stretching out in the background, and numerous parasol rental companies have taken over much of the beach. The local Restaurant Nissaki<\/em> is one of the best on the island.<\/p>\n

Things are much more relaxed at Laguna Beach<\/strong>, 2 km further south. As the name suggests, a reef forms a lagoon landscape here, the entrance to the sea is shallow, and the fine grey sandy beach invites you to take a leisurely walk. There are no operators on site, and the wind can blow very strongly here at times, which windsurfers tend to appreciate.<\/p>\n

There are also bathing areas north of the capital, but almost all of them are unmanaged. Due to their orientation, they are exposed to strong north winds (Meltemi), which can produce high waves. If that doesn’t bother you, the sandy Amitis Beach and the pebble beaches near Mikra, Kampos and Avraam<\/strong> are well worth a visit.<\/p>\n

#1 Agios Prokopios Beach<\/h3>\n

Agios Prokopios Beach<\/strong> is located about 6 km (roughly 12 minutes by car) south of Chora and is one of the most popular beaches on Naxos. Although there are numerous hotels and apartment complexes around the bay, the beach never feels crowded thanks to its sheer size. Those with a sweet tooth are well catered for by Mr. Donut<\/em>, who sells delicious doughnuts right on the beach.<\/p>\n

A good dozen bars and beach restaurants cater to your physical well-being and also rent out inexpensive deck chairs (from \u20ac15 p.p.). The northwestern section, near the eponymous chapel of Agios Prokopios, is the quietest. Behind the beach are three large salt lakes, which shimmer pink at times.<\/p>\n
