Perhaps in a year&#8217;s time, Kimolos will merely be a reflection of its cosmopolitan neighbour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We explored Kimolos extensively for Greek Easter in May, received a warm welcome from the locals and were absolutely thrilled by this island dwarf. Below, we reveal our 5 highlights of this charming Cycladic island:<\/p>\n<h2>#1 Walk through Chorio<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just over 900 people live on the island, which measures a mere 37 km\u00b2, most of them in the main town of Chorio. Even upon arrival by ferry in Psathi, the <strong>port of Kimolos<\/strong>, you can spot some of the white cubic houses perched above.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36516\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36516\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36516\" title=\"psathi kimolos hafen f\u00e4hre\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/psathi-kimolos-hafen-faehre.jpg\" alt=\"psathi kimolos hafen f\u00e4hre\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36516\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arrival at the port of Psathi on Kimolos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From the sea to Chorio is about a 900-metre walk. From the harbour, follow the road to the <em>Twins Coffeeshop<\/em> and turn left into the village behind it. After 180 m, an alleyway leads to the right towards the large main church of Panagia Odigitria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you arrive by car, you can leave it in the free car parks on the western outskirts of the village (Municipal Parking) or below the Ipapanti Church. Here you will find a number of caf\u00e9s (tip: <em>Stou Fragouli<\/em>) and tavernas, a playground and two churches, including the 17th-century Agios Ioannis O Xrysostomos. A look inside the large village church of Kimolos is well worth it for its rich decorations. The Venetian castle complex dates back to the 13th century and today survives only as a ruin. For history buffs, it is well worth taking a short walk through the medieval settlement, past ruined houses and chapels. The alley leads past some souvenir shops to the traditional <em>Bakery Paradosiakos<\/em>, where you can try &#8220;Ladenia&#8221;, a type of flatbread topped with tomatoes, onions and olive oil.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After the bakery, turn left back towards the Platia. You will pass the <em>Stavento ice cream parlour<\/em>, where you can enjoy a cooling freddo alongside delicious homemade ice cream.<\/p>\n<h3>Windmills of Kimolos<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>windmills of Kimolos<\/strong> on Mount Xaplovouni are the island&#8217;s ultimate landmark, just as they are on many other <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/greek-islands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Greek islands<\/a>. They are located directly above the main town of Chorio and are best reached on foot. From the windmill hill you have a fantastic view over to the uninhabited <strong>neighbouring island of Polyegos<\/strong> \u2013 a highly romantic spot, particularly at sunset!<\/p>\n<div style=\"border-left: 4px solid #00aad9; background: rgba(0, 170, 217, 0.05); padding: 14px 18px; margin: 24px 0; font-family: sans-serif; border-radius: 6px;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; color: #333333; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5; text-align: justify;\">\ud83d\udca1 <strong>The donkeys of Kimolos<\/strong>: On no other island have we seen quite so many donkeys as on Kimolos. You will encounter the &#8220;Gaidouraki&#8221; (Greek for donkey) all over the island. Particularly from the windmill hill, their &#8220;ee-aw&#8221; could be heard ringing out from all directions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36513\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36513\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36513\" title=\"esel von kimolos griechenland\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/esel-von-kimolos-griechenland.jpg\" alt=\"esel von kimolos griechenland\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36513\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kimolos and its donkeys<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2>#2 Kimolos&#8217; Boathouses: Goupa, Karras and Psathi<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>harbour village of Psathi<\/strong> is where everyone sets foot on land for the first time. When we entered the small port of Kimolos at the beginning of May, we were greeted by a tranquil scene. In front of a narrow pebble beach stood a few white, cubic houses lined up next to one another. A taverna directly on the shore had already put out its parasols.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36517\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36517\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36517\" title=\"hafen psathi kimolos anreise\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/hafen-psathi-kimolos-anreise.jpg\" alt=\"hafen psathi kimolos anreise\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36517\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Harbour town of Psathi on Kimolos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most people leave Psathi on their left immediately after arrival, but it is well worth stopping at the caf\u00e9 <em>To Raventi<\/em>. Here you can let your first impression of the island sink in over a cool freddo before setting off on further discoveries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just 1.5 km from Psathi, in the southeast of the island, lies the small <strong>fishing village of Goupa<\/strong>. At first glance, this cluster of white houses on the coast might seem unspectacular.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36518\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36518\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36518\" title=\"goupa kimolos syrmata bootsh\u00e4user\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/goupa-kimolos-syrmata-bootshaeuser.jpg\" alt=\"goupa kimolos syrmata bootsh\u00e4user\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36518\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Fishing village of Goupa with boat garages<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But taking a short walk from Goupa beach along the coast, you will discover boat garages (Syrmata) with distinctively coloured doors, carved into the tuff stone much like the <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/milos-boathouses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Milos boathouses<\/a>. The <strong>Syrmata of Goupa<\/strong> largely still serve their original purpose, as evidenced by the fishing boats anchored directly in front of them.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-3' class='gallery galleryid-52194 gallery-columns-2 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"534\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/fischerdorf-goupa-kimolos.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"fischerdorf goupa kimolos\" title=\"\">\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/kimolos-goupa-strand-bootshaeuser.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"kimolos goupa strand bootsh\u00e4user\" title=\"\">\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can enjoy a beautiful view of Goupa bay and its turquoise sea from the &#8220;petrified elephant&#8221; \u2013 a rocky outcrop sitting on the shore. For a quick dip, we recommend <strong>Rema Beach<\/strong> west of the village. The beach at Goupa itself was unfortunately looking rather neglected during our stay.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36523\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36523\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36523\" title=\"elephant rock kimolos goupa\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/elephant-rock-kimolos-goupa.jpg\" alt=\"elephant rock kimolos goupa\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elephant Rock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Note: Parking in Goupa is limited. It is best to park on the main road, as stopping just above the beach is strictly reserved for locals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just one bay further east lies the <strong>coastal village of Karras<\/strong>, with its rugged coastline of white tuff and sandstone. Here the sea shimmers in the most stunning shades of blue and green, practically inviting you in for a swim. Snorkelling is also excellent here when the sea is calm.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36525\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36525\" title=\"karras kimolos kykladen\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/karras-kimolos-kykladen.jpg\" alt=\"karras kimolos kykladen\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Coast near Karras<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The rocky coast is a wonderful place to linger under the shade of tamarisk trees. There is an unpaved car park at the entrance to the village where you can leave your car and walk down to the shore.<\/p>\n<h2>#3 Kimolos&#8217; wild west coast<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The west of Kimolos is secluded and largely uninhabited. In May, bales of hay were still blowing through the tiny settlements, and all the tavernas remained closed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Coming from Chorio, you first pass the inconspicuous hamlet of <strong>Aliki<\/strong> with its mostly dried-up salt lake. From there, follow the gravel track directly along the sea.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After a few minutes you will reach the <strong>sandy beach of Bonatsa<\/strong>, followed closely by the bay of Kalamitsi Beach. Both beaches slope gently into the crystal-clear water, making them ideal for families with small children.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36527\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36527\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36527\" title=\"kimolos str\u00e4nde bonatsa beach\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/kimolos-straende-bonatsa-beach.jpg\" alt=\"kimolos str\u00e4nde bonatsa beach\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36527\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bonatsa Beach in spring<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The asphalt road ends at the bay of Fykiada in the far west, but it is well worth continuing the drive north along the west coast for a while.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The long stretch of Paralia Dekas flows seamlessly into <strong>Ellinika Beach<\/strong>. Both beaches are unspoilt and were completely deserted during our visit. Here you can enjoy an undisturbed swim, though only when the wind is calm.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36529\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36529\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36529\" title=\"kimolos westen k\u00fcste felsformationen\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/kimolos-westen-kueste-felsformationen.jpg\" alt=\"kimolos westen k\u00fcste felsformationen\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36529\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bizarre rock formations on the west coast<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just off the shore of Ellinika Beach lie bizarre rock formations. Ash deposits from ancient volcanic eruptions have created pointed rock needles and other striking shapes here. The atmosphere is particularly magical at sunset!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From here you have a clear view of the offshore <strong>island of Agios Andreas<\/strong>. In ancient times, this island was connected to Kimolos and housed the island&#8217;s ancient capital. Gradually, however, the narrow isthmus subsided, separating the landmasses. Even today, divers can explore the ruins of this sunken city.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_36528\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-36528\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-36528\" title=\"mavrospilia beach kimolos agios andreas\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mavrospilia-beach-kimolos-agios-andreas.jpg\" alt=\"mavrospilia beach kimolos agios andreas\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-36528\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View from Mavrospilia beach to Ag. Andreas<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the last beaches on the west coast accessible by car is <strong>Mavrospilia Beach<\/strong>. This stretch of brown sand is bordered by a few tamarisk trees, and in summer the beach bar <em>Sunset Paradise<\/em> opens, offering sun loungers, drinks and snacks at fair prices. A very special highlight here is watching the sunset with a view of the white rock needles of &#8220;Aspragremna&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2>#4 Hike to Skiadi<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A marvel of nature awaits you in the northwest of Kimolos. The Skiadi Rock is one of the geological monuments of the Aegean Sea. Even from a distance, the water of the lagoon shimmers in the most stunning shades of blue, making Prassa arguably the most charming spot on the island. The bright sandy beach shelves very gently into the sea, creating an almost Caribbean setting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">These days, the entire stretch of <strong>Prassa Beach<\/strong> (also known as Agios Georgios Beach) is completely natural and unmanaged. You must bring your own parasols, though a few tamarisk trees do provide some shade. Just behind the lagoon lies the <strong>bentonite mine of the Kedros Peninsula<\/strong>. Powdery-white bentonite is a clay mineral of volcanic origin, commonly known as healing clay because it can bind toxins and heavy metals and flush them from the body.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Bentonite is used not only as a dietary supplement but also in construction, cosmetics, the food industry, and even as cat litter. The Osia Methodia ferry, which sails from Pollonia on Milos, carries vehicles of all sizes.
