Greek legislation is strict and very bureaucratic, though enforcement has been somewhat relaxed so far. But the issue of <strong>wild camping in Greece<\/strong> is increasingly on the government&#8217;s agenda in Athens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>In general, wild camping is prohibited in Greece!<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_38119\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38119\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38119\" title=\"Camping Chalkidiki Griechenland wildcampen erlaubt Stellplatz\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Camping-Chalkidiki-Griechenland-wildcampen-erlaubt-Stellplatz.jpg\" alt=\"Camping Chalkidiki Griechenland wildcampen erlaubt Stellplatz\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-38119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Attention wild campers: Greece is cracking down<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Camping in Greece \u2013 New Law 2025<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since 20 January 2025, Greece has introduced <strong>Law 5170\/2025<\/strong>, which significantly tightens the rules on wild camping and the parking of motorhomes. This particularly affects motorhome travellers, campers and caravan drivers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Wild camping has technically been illegal in Greece for many years. However, the new law clarifies the regulations and strengthens enforcement. Anyone travelling with a motorhome should be aware of these rules to avoid heavy fines or even criminal penalties.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2192 What is prohibited when camping in Greece?<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The law explicitly prohibits camping or extended overnight parking of motorhomes, caravans or tents in the following locations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>at archaeological sites<\/li>\n<li>directly by the sea or on beaches<\/li>\n<li>in forests or along the edges of public woodland<\/li>\n<li>in public squares or other publicly accessible areas<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Restrictions also apply on private property: without special permission, <strong>only one motorhome or caravan<\/strong> may be hosted. Multiple vehicles may legally be considered a camping business and therefore require an official licence.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2192 What penalties apply for wild camping in Greece?<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a fine of <strong>\u20ac300 per person or vehicle<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>possible additional financial penalties in court proceedings<\/li>\n<li>a prison sentence of up to three months<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The fine can be issued directly by the police or the coastguard.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u2192 Important when parking a motorhome in Greece<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Normal parking with a motorhome may still be permitted if it complies with traffic regulations. However, no <strong>camping behaviour<\/strong> may be visible. The key distinction is between <strong>parking and camping<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Parking a motorhome is permitted wherever car parking is allowed \u2013 including along the coast or near beaches, provided there are no specific local restrictions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, once camping behaviour becomes visible \u2013 tables, chairs, awnings or camping equipment set out \u2013 this may be considered <strong>wild camping and is prohibited<\/strong> under Law 5170\/2025.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To avoid problems and heavy fines, you should only stay overnight at <strong>official campsites or designated camper areas<\/strong> (Greek: \u039a\u03ac\u03bc\u03c0\u03b9\u03bd\u03b3\u03ba). During the day, you may park on public parking spaces or along the roadside where permitted by traffic regulations. Camper associations and the Greek motorhome club (ELAT) have criticised parts of the regulation and continue to call for clearer guidelines for the practical implementation of the law.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11413\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11413\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11413\" title=\"Camping Griechenland wildcampen erlaubt Inseln\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Camping-Griechenland-wildcampen-erlaubt-Inseln.jpg\" alt=\"Camping Griechenland wildcampen erlaubt Inseln\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11413\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wild camping has been tolerated so far<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In general, the following applies: after camping, leave everything as you found it, take all rubbish with you, avoid unnecessary noise, and for bathroom needs \u2013 if there is no toilet in the caravan or nearby \u2013 <strong>use public toilets<\/strong> or visit nearby restaurants or caf\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<div style=\"border-left: 4px solid #00aad9; background: rgba(0, 170, 217, 0.05); padding: 14px 18px; margin: 24px 0; font-family: sans-serif; border-radius: 6px;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; color: #333333; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5; text-align: justify;\">\ud83d\udca1 <strong>Free parking at the taverna:<\/strong> The Greeks are a very friendly people and are generally open to interesting ideas. If you are considering a taverna&#8217;s private car park as a potential overnight spot after dining there, it is worth asking the owner. Especially in the low season, you may well be able to secure a free overnight spot, as long as no other motorhome is already parked there.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you are planning <strong>island hopping by motorhome<\/strong>, it is advisable to research thoroughly beforehand whether campsites are available on the islands you want to visit, to avoid ending up with no choice but to rely on wild camping \u2013 which is tolerated in practice but officially illegal.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27613\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27613\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-27613\" title=\"Caravan Stellplatz Wohnwagen Griechenland Urlaub\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/Caravan-Stellplatz-Wohnwagen-Griechenland-Urlaub.jpg\" alt=\"Caravan Stellplatz Wohnwagen Griechenland Urlaub\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Caravan pitch with locals<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Particular caution is advised around fire and barbecues. In summer the landscape is extremely dry \u2013 a single spark can ignite a large-scale fire. In the event of proven negligence, draconian fines can be imposed. On <strong>campsites, open fires<\/strong> outside designated areas are not permitted, in order to reduce the risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/greece-fires\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wildfires in Greece<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>#2 Best time to go camping in Greece<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The best time to go camping in Greece is from <strong>March to June<\/strong> and from <strong>September to November<\/strong>. From mid-October you can expect occasional rain showers. November still brings many sunny days, but from the start of December uncomfortable weather sets in, with winter storms and heavy rain commonplace. Temperatures are very high for days on end, and even at night rarely drop below 25\u00b0C. In addition, many campsites are completely overcrowded, as Greek families also use camping as a budget travel option.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you prefer a quieter experience, plan your tour for early autumn: school in Greece resumes in September and the campsites begin to empty. Anyone travelling by motorhome during this period will need to be largely self-sufficient in many areas. In addition, most campsites are only open from 1 April to 31 October.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>#3 Getting to Greece with Camper &amp; Caravan<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The drive to Greece by campervan or caravan can be a highlight in its own right.
