In the hinterland, Serifos is largely deserted; only two places are truly bustling: Livadi by the sea and the upper village of Chora, situated above it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The latter is the epitome of a Cycladic dream come true and, for that reason alone, worth a trip to the island for Greece enthusiasts. In addition, Serifos offers a wide variety of beaches, ranging from golden sand to brown gravel and colorful pebbles, many of which remain deserted even in summer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Join us on a tour of the island; we\u2019ll show you the spots we particularly loved and what the most popular <strong>sights on Serifos<\/strong> are:<\/p>\n<h2>#1 Chora: A Postcard Image of Serifos<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We visited Serifos as part of our island-hopping trip through Milos \u2013 Kimolos \u2013 Sifnos \u2013 Serifos \u2013 Kythnos in May. It\u2019s not easy for this small, 75-square-kilometer island\u2014which remains relatively unknown\u2014to shine alongside Cycladic gems like Milos and Kimolos. The <strong>main settlement of Serifos<\/strong> looks as if an artist had painted a sea of white houses into the barren brown landscape; the summit is crowned by a cluster of chapels. The road up to Chora is often congested, and parking spots are hard to find. In mid-May, however, it was very quiet; only a few caf\u00e9s and shops were open yet, and preparations were still underway everywhere.<\/p>\n<div style=\"border-left: 4px solid #00aad9; background: rgba(0, 170, 217, 0.05); padding: 14px 18px; margin: 24px 0; font-family: sans-serif; border-radius: 6px;\">\n<p style=\"margin: 0px; color: #333333; font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.5; text-align: justify;\">\ud83d\udca1 <strong>Hike to Chora<\/strong>: In the past, only a steep mule trail (200 meters elevation gain, 2 km) led from the sea up to Chora. The picturesque path is still well-preserved; it takes at least 30 minutes to walk from Livadi to Kato Chora. Just below the Agios Isidoros chapel, the trail climbs straight up for a kilometer on whitewashed steps. Caution: You\u2019ll cross the main road repeatedly. It\u2019s a pretty sight with its neoclassical town hall, the blue-and-white church of Agios Athanasios, and the caf\u00e9s with their colorful wicker chairs. Sometimes you\u2019ll even see mules passing by\u2014they\u2019re used in Chora to transport goods. Nevertheless, the climb is worth it (signposted \u201cproz kaztro\u201d), as the unobstructed view of Livadi Bay and the Aegean Sea, with the neighboring island of <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/sifnos-sights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sifnos<\/a>, is sensational at any time of day. The surrounding <strong>hilltop churches of Ag. Konstantinos<\/strong>, Ag. Barbaras, and Ag. Together with Livadakia and Avlomonas, it is now the island\u2019s largest municipality and also its greenest spot, as Livadi means \u201cfertile meadows.\u201d Founded in 1870 as a port solely for mining shipments, life now thrives in this village of 500 souls.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34494\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34494\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34494\" title=\"Livadi Serifos Kykalden Urlaub Tipps\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Livadi-Serifos-Kykalden-Urlaub-Tipps.jpg\" alt=\"Livadi Serifos Kykalden Urlaub Tipps\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34494\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Livadi: Port Town, Bay, and Valley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Numerous taverns, caf\u00e9s, and bars line <strong>Livadi\u2019s long waterfront promenade<\/strong>. Behind them stretch haphazardly built apartment complexes and small hotel resorts. Livadi is not exactly an architectural masterpiece, there is no classic town center, and development occurred too quickly and likely too uncontrollably. In search of seclusion, quite a few vacationers have avoided the trendy destinations with mass tourism and increasingly sought out modest islands like Serifos. Nevertheless, most travelers only come to the island in the summer; sailors also appreciate Serifos in the off-season.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34497\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34497\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34497\" title=\"Livadi Serifos Restaurants am Meer Fischer Boot\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Livadi-Serifos-Restaurants-am-Meer-Fischer-Boot.jpg\" alt=\"Livadi Serifos Restaurants am Meer Fischer Boot\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34497\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Walk along the waterfront promenade<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In May, things were still quiet in Livadi, but we were surprised that almost all of the more than 20 taverns and caf\u00e9s by the sea were open. Too much of a good thing for our taste, but certainly a dream for people who love variety. In the town center, there is nothing special besides a few shops and souvenir stores; the boutique <em>Calle 31<\/em> is worth mentioning here.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34499\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34499\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34499\" title=\"Livadi Serifos Hafen Livadakia Hotels\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Livadi-Serifos-Hafen-Livadakia-Hotels.jpg\" alt=\"Livadi Serifos Hafen Livadakia Hotels\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34499\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Livadi and Livadakia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">So, in Livadi, there\u2019s not much more to do than stroll along the seafront. History buffs might also visit the <strong>Serifos Archaeological Museum<\/strong> (daily 8:30 a.m.\u20133:30 p.m., closed Tuesdays) behind the <em>Yacht Club <\/em><i>Caf\u00e9<\/i>, which showcases the island\u2019s artifacts in a compact space. Due to the heavy sailing and ferry traffic, we recommend the neighboring Livadakia Beach for swimming.<\/p>\n<h3>Relaxing at Livadakia Beach<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Livadakia<\/strong> is an extension of Livadi to the south. Most of the buildings date from the last few decades; the settlement, located directly on the sandy beach of the same name, consists mainly of small 2- or 3-star hotels and apartment complexes. The majority of Serifos vacationers stay in Livadakia (our recommendation: <a href=\"#galazio\">Galazio Suites<\/a>).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34500\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34500\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34500\" title=\"Livadakia Beach Serifos Urlaub auf den Kykladen\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Livadakia-Beach-Serifos-Urlaub-auf-den-Kykladen.jpg\" alt=\"Livadakia Beach Serifos Urlaub auf den Kykladen\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Idyllic Livadakia Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It&#8217;s understandable that Livadakia Beach, with its golden sand and turquoise sea, is a wonderful place to relax. The <em>Vassilia All Day Beach Bar<\/em> and the <em>Alexandros Taverna<\/em> rent out lounge chairs and cater to your culinary needs. From the dune hill at the end of the beach, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Livadi and Chora.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34501\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34501\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34501\" title=\"Serifos Livadi Livadakia Beach Camping Kykladen\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Serifos-Livadi-Livadakia-Beach-Camping-Kykladen.jpg\" alt=\"Serifos Livadi Livadakia Beach Camping Kykladen\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34501\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View from the dune hill<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you continue along the gravel path, you\u2019ll reach Karavi Beach in 5 minutes\u2014a popular nude beach on Serifos that\u2019s unmanaged and therefore rarely visited. The<strong> Serifos campground<\/strong> is also located at Livadakia Beach. Once a popular vacation spot for Greek families, <em>Coralli Camping<\/em> is slowly transforming into the Coralli Seaside Resort. Due to their proximity to the harbor, Psili Ammos, Agios Sostis, and others are also the most popular. While (almost) all are accessible by car, in summer they are so crowded that finding a parking spot becomes a nightmare. Nevertheless, it\u2019s worth renting a car for 1\u20132 days to explore the island and its secluded beaches. Basically, there is only one main road that circles the island and branches off in the middle via Chora to Livadi. You can find out what to keep in mind regarding traffic and car rentals on the Greek islands in our separate post: <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/car-rental-greece\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Car Rentals in Greece<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>#4 Trip to the Taxiarches Monastery<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From Livadi, it\u2019s about a 20-minute drive to the island\u2019s most significant monastery. Passing the beaches of Psili Ammos and Ag. Ioannis, the road winds its way up to an altitude of about 400 meters. Halfway up, the <strong>village of Kentarchos<\/strong>, also known as Kallitsos, nestles picturesquely on a mountainside. The small hamlet, which translates to \u201cthe most beautiful,\u201d immediately charmed us, but also disappointed us.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34514\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34514\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34514\" title=\"Kentarchos Serifos Kallitsos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Kentarchos-Serifos-Kallitsos.jpg\" alt=\"Kentarchos Serifos Kallitsos\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34514\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kentarchos (Kallitsos)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The alleys with their ornate floor patterns have long since fallen silent. Like other settlements in the <strong>hinterland of Serifos<\/strong>, the village has been hit hard by depopulation; only a few families, and mostly older islanders, still live here today. We would have loved to have a kafeneion here with a view of the endless blue sea. As it is, Kallitsos remains merely a stopover, which is a shame.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34515\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34515\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34515\" title=\"Taxiarches Kloster Serifos Kykalden\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Taxiarches-Kloster-Serifos-Kykalden.jpg\" alt=\"Taxiarches Kloster Serifos Kykalden\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34515\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Monastery, a Fortress-Like Structure<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A short while later, you reach the <strong>Taxiarches Monastery<\/strong>, which stands out even from a distance due to its fortress-like construction, featuring walls up to 4 meters high and even loopholes for defense. Built in 1572 and dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, the monastery possessed great wealth and was repeatedly subjected to pirate attacks.<\/p>\n<div id='gallery-3' class='gallery galleryid-51295 gallery-columns-2 gallery-size-full'><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"534\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Erzengel-Kloster-Serifos-Kykladen-Taxiarches.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"Erzengel Kloster Serifos Kykladen Taxiarches\" title=\"\">\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure><figure class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<div class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"533\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Serifos-Kloster-Taxiarches-Erzengel.jpg\" class=\"attachment-full size-full\" alt=\"Serifos Kloster Taxiarches Erzengel\" title=\"\">\n\t\t\t<\/div><\/figure>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1617, a monastery school was established, and over the centuries, the monastery developed into the island\u2019s religious and educational center. At its peak, up to 30 monks lived here. In recent decades, it was inhabited by only one person, Father Makarios, who passed away in 2019. His successor, Father Evdokimos, has since been offering tours of the monastery.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34516\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34516\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34516\" title=\"Serifos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Erzengel Kloster Taxiarches\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Serifos-Sehenswuerdigkeiten-Erzengel-Kloster-Taxiarches.jpg\" alt=\"Serifos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Erzengel Kloster Taxiarches\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34516\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Heavenly View<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After entering through the monastery gate, you find yourself in front of the three-nave church with its blood-red dome, surrounded by a surprisingly green courtyard. This courtyard invites you to linger, and there are also a few beautiful photo opportunities to be captured. Inside the church are valuable icons and several frescoes from the original building (1447). We were unable to visit the monastery library with its ancient manuscripts.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Opening hours for Taxiarchis Monastery on Serifos:<\/strong> 9:00 AM\u20131:30 PM and 4:30 PM\u20137:00 PM, free admission (donations appreciated)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Photo stop at Panagia Skopiani<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">About two kilometers before the Archangel Monastery, one of the island\u2019s most beautiful photo spots awaits you: the <strong>Panagia Skopiani<\/strong> church. Barely visible from the main road, a whitewashed staircase leads down to the church. Like many churches on Serifos, it is unfortunately closed, but the view of the Aegean Sea and the neighboring islands of <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/kythnos-sights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kythnos<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/syros-sights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Syros<\/a> makes up for it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34520\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34520\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34520\" title=\"Panagia Skopiani Serifos Kirche sch\u00f6ne Orte\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Panagia-Skopiani-Serifos-Kirche-schoene-Orte.jpg\" alt=\"Panagia Skopiani Serifos Kirche sch\u00f6ne Orte\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34520\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Panagia Skopiani<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If you have the chance, you can take part in the big church festival on August 14, the eve of the Assumption of Mary. Then the village comes to life for a short time, and the church square is atmospherically lit. Another pretty little church (Agios Minas) stands on the access road to <strong>Platis Gialos Beach<\/strong>, also worth a photo stop.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34521\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34521\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34521\" title=\"Agios Minas Kirche Serifos Platis Gialos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Agios-Minas-Kirche-Serifos-Platis-Gialos.jpg\" alt=\"Agios Minas Kirche Serifos Platis Gialos\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34521\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Agios Minas Church<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>#5 Northern Serifos: Between Vineyards and Solitude<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>north of Serifos<\/strong> is characterized by steep mountains with thousands of terraces where vegetables, grains, and wine were once grown. Although viticulture on Serifos dates back to ancient times, many farmers have given up cultivating the steep terraced slopes. The work is arduous; machines are out of place here; everything is done by hand, with only mules and donkeys to help.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34522\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34522\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34522\" title=\"Serifos Norden Terrassen Felder Wein Griechenland\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Serifos-Norden-Terrassen-Felder-Wein-Griechenland.jpg\" alt=\"Serifos Norden Terrassen Felder Wein Griechenland\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34522\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Landscape in northern Serifos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to historian Ludwig Ross, 4,000 tons of wine were still being exported annually at the beginning of the 19th century. After World War II, wine production came to a complete standstill. Interestingly, wild stands of old local grape varieties still exist throughout the island; up to 20 varieties have been identified so far.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Since 2015, the island\u2019s wine culture has been revived at <strong>Chrysoloras Winery<\/strong>. Production today stands at 15,000 to 20,000 bottles per year. Nine fine wines, including 7 organic wines, are now available, among them the island\u2019s signature white wine <em>Ksiro Chorio<\/em> (Greek for \u201cdry village\u201d), an aromatic, dry white wine with low acidity that lives up to its name.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34523\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34523\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34523\" title=\"Chrysoloras Winery Serifos Kykladen\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Chrysoloras-Winery-Serifos-Kykladen.jpg\" alt=\"Chrysoloras Winery Serifos Kykladen\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34523\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vineyards of Chrysoloras Winery<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Also worth highlighting are the <em>Oranz Wine<\/em>, which winemaker Christos ages for several months in large clay amphorae, giving it an orange color and a distinctive flavor, and the ros\u00e9 wine <em>Charoumenos Vatrachos<\/em>, translated as \u201ccheerful frog,\u201d a nod to the many <strong>frogs on Serifos<\/strong> that are said to spend the winter and spring here.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34525\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34525\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34525\" title=\"Serifos Weingut Chrysoloras Winery Kykladen\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Serifos-Weingut-Chrysoloras-Winery-Kykladen-1.jpg\" alt=\"Serifos Weingut Chrysoloras Winery Kykladen\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34525\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oranz Wine Amphorae<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The only commercial <strong>winery on Serifos<\/strong> is located about 1 km above the Taxiarchis Monastery. Advance reservations are recommended; for more information, visit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chrysoloras.gr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chrysoloras Winery<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Lunch Break in Platis Gialos<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">For a refreshing dip in the cool sea or a lunch break accompanied by the sound of the waves, it\u2019s worth taking a detour to the scattered settlement of Platis Gialos below. A bumpy concrete road leads past farms down to the sea. At <strong>Messiano<\/strong> <strong>Bay,<\/strong> the family-run tavern <em>Nikoulias<\/em> serves up delicious food from May through October.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34526\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34526\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34526\" title=\"Serifos Kykladen Platis Gialos Messiano Bucht\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Serifos-Kykladen-Platis-Gialos-Messiano-Bucht.jpg\" alt=\"Serifos Kykladen Platis Gialos Messiano Bucht\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34526\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Messiano Bay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The view of the sea is incredibly relaxing, and in a peaceful atmosphere, typical island dishes such as fennel balls and other traditional Greek fare are served. The small mountain <strong>villages of Galini, Pyrgos<\/strong>, <strong>and Panagia<\/strong>, which nestle closely against the slopes, do have a certain charm, but they lack vitality. Unfortunately, no such luck! There used to be eight coffeehouses in the village. It\u2019s a shame, because the village center is home to the <strong>oldest church on Serifos<\/strong>, called Xylopanagia (11th century). Those who love solitude can drive down to the wild <strong>Sikamia Beach<\/strong>, where the family-run tavern <em>To Akrogiali tou Vitou<\/em> opens its doors during the summer months.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34532\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34532\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34532\" title=\"Sikamia Beach Serifos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Sikamia-Beach-Serifos.jpg\" alt=\"Sikamia Beach Serifos\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34532\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sikamia Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>#6 Koutalas Bay<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many treeless hills and quite green valleys, plus a rugged coastline with stunning bays\u2014that\u2019s the <strong>west of Serifos<\/strong>. The wind-sheltered anchorages are a paradise for sailors, but water lovers will also find plenty to enjoy on the many beaches. From Livadi or Livadakia, it takes about 30 minutes (15 km) to reach the village of Megalo Livadi in the far west.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34533\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34533\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34533\" title=\"Serifos Koutalas Bucht\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Serifos-Koutalas-Bucht.jpg\" alt=\"Serifos Koutalas Bucht\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34533\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Koutalas Bay and Ganema Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The drive is very picturesque, following the coastline with stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the neighboring islands of <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/kimolos-sights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kimolos<\/a> and Milos in the distance. <strong>Koutalas Bay<\/strong>, in particular, is a real highlight; three large beaches offer plenty of space even in summer, so everyone can find a quiet spot.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34534\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34534\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34534\" title=\"Vagia Beach Serifos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Vagia-Beach-Serifos.jpg\" alt=\"Vagia Beach Serifos\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34534\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Vagia Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the <strong>beaches of Vagia,<\/strong> Ganema, and Koutalas, which nestle against the bay, simple beach bars open in the summer, serving refreshments and, in some cases, renting out lounge chairs. Most beachgoers, however, seek out a spot under the tamarisk trees or bring their own beach umbrella. During our visit in May, the three beaches (all pebbly) were deserted.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34535\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34535\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34535\" title=\"Serifos Koutalas Beach\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Serifos-Koutalas-Beach.jpg\" alt=\"Serifos Koutalas Beach\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34535\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Koutalas Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Near <strong>Koutalas<\/strong>, you come across the first remnants of mining. Rusty trucks and mine cars stand by the roadside, and not far from the Agia Theodora Church, you can still find the remains of an old loading ramp by the sea. Pits and holes are visible throughout the mountains, appearing like craters in the landscape.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34536\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34536\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34536\" title=\"Agia Theodora Kirche Serifos Koutalas\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Agia-Theodora-Kirche-Serifos-Koutalas.jpg\" alt=\"Agia Theodora Kirche Serifos Koutalas\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34536\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ag. Theodora Church and loading crane<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Aspros Kavos: Serifos\u2019 Mysterious Cape<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It is a well-kept secret: right by the sea lie the bizarre remains of centuries-old mines, known to the locals as \u201cWhite Cape,\u201d or <strong>Aspros Kavos<\/strong>. Ore was likely mined here as early as the Middle Ages. Particularly striking are the many different rock layers, which give the area a unique character.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34537\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34537\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34537\" title=\"Aspros Kavos Serifos Kykladen\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Aspros-Kavos-Serifos-Kykladen.jpg\" alt=\"Aspros Kavos Serifos Kykladen\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34537\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aspros Kavos from above<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">White, beige, violet, red, and brown\u2014the bizarre rocks shimmer as they drop several meters into the sea. You can explore the area from a plateau of light-colored rock. A small path leads down to the sea, where a large grotto is located. It\u2019s best to ask the locals for the exact location, if they even know it themselves.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34542\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34542\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34542\" title=\"Aspros Kavos Serifos Kykladen Mine\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Aspros-Kavos-Serifos-Kykladen-Mine.jpg\" alt=\"Aspros Kavos Serifos Kykladen Mine\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34542\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">An Adventurous Setting<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>#7 Mining Village of Megalo Livadi<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The further west you drive, the more barren the landscape becomes; no trees grow here anymore, just a few farmhouses and white little churches add splashes of color to the wasteland. Behind <strong>Malliadiko Beach<\/strong>, the road climbs up a ridge; at the turnoff into the mountains, follow the signs to Megalo Livadi and you\u2019ll reach the sea through a long valley.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34581\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34581\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34581\" title=\"Kykladen Urlaub auf Serifos Agia Triada Kirche\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Kykladen-Urlaub-auf-Serifos-Agia-Triada-Kirche.jpg\" alt=\"Kykladen Urlaub auf Serifos Agia Triada Kirche\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34581\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Endless expanses to the west<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The valley once housed 700 inhabitants, stretching from the port of Megalo Livadi to the upper <strong>village of Megalo Chorio<\/strong>. Starting in 1861, iron ore was mined here for 100 years, and many people from other islands came to Serifos to work. The island\u2019s population doubled by 1910 to over 4,000 people, half of whom were employed in mining.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34543\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34543\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34543\" title=\"Megalo Livadi Serifos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Megalo-Livadi-Serifos-Sehenswuerdigkeiten.jpg\" alt=\"Megalo Livadi Serifos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34543\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Megalo Livadi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The main operator was initially a Greek company, later the <strong>French company Serifos-Spilialeza<\/strong> under the management of the German Grohmann family. In 1916, the miners successfully rebelled against the miserable working conditions and fought a bloody battle to secure the 40-hour workweek and higher wages.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In <strong>Megalo Livadi,<\/strong> a monument now commemorates the miners\u2019 struggle against oppression. After the closure of the copper and iron ore mines in the 1950s and 1960s, many residents left the village due to a lack of job opportunities; quite a few even turned their backs on Serifos. There are numerous tunnels throughout the area, but we advise against exploring them due to the risk of collapse.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34544\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34544\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34544\" title=\"Megalo Livadi alte Mine Serifos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Megalo-Livadi-alte-Mine-Serifos.jpg\" alt=\"Megalo Livadi alte Mine Serifos\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34544\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former iron ore tunnel in<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The large cave above Megalo Livadi is not worth visiting; it has collapsed. On the other side, there is still a loading crane and rusted mine cars, which make for good photo opportunities. The cave further back, with the old <strong>Almiros hot springs<\/strong> on the shore, looked from a distance as if it had collapsed.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34546\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34546\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34546\" title=\"Serifos Megalo Livadi Bergbau\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Serifos-Megalo-Livadi-Bergbau.jpg\" alt=\"Serifos Megalo Livadi Bergbau\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34546\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Path to the old loading crane<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Today, the place seems deserted, yet two taverns serve simple meals to day-trippers at rather high prices. At the end of the beach\u2014which, unfortunately, didn\u2019t invite us to swim\u2014stand the remains of the<strong> mining company\u2019s administrative building<\/strong>, which was being diligently renovated during our visit. Plans are in place to establish a mining museum, similar to the one on <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/milos-sights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Milos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34548\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34548\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34548\" title=\"Megalo Livadi Tavernen Serifos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Megalo-Livadi-Tavernen-Serifos.jpg\" alt=\"Megalo Livadi Tavernen Serifos\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34548\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Taverns on the beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">There isn\u2019t much else to see in Megalo Livadi; above it lies the <strong>Moni Evaggelistrias convent<\/strong> (20th century), though it doesn\u2019t look very inviting from the outside. It sits on a hill above Megalo Livadi. Curiously, all the blocks that didn\u2019t fit into the puzzle lie in front of it like giant Tetris blocks. An information board provides details about <strong>Aspros Pyrgos<\/strong> and its surroundings.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34549\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34549\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34549\" title=\"Serifos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten wei\u00dfer Turm\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Serifos-Sehenswuerdigkeiten-weisser-Turm.jpg\" alt=\"Serifos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten wei\u00dfer Turm\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34549\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">White Tower in the evening<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From here, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Aegean Sea and part of the Western Cyclades. The atmosphere here is especially beautiful at sunset. Another ancient tower is located near the nunnery above Megalo Livadi. The <strong>Throne of Cyclops<\/strong> is accessible only on foot and is also a great spot for watching the sunset.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34552\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34552\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34552\" title=\"Throne of Cyclops Serifos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Throne-of-Cyclops-Serifos.jpg\" alt=\"Throne of Cyclops Serifos\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34552\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Throne of Cyclops<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>#8 Serifos Lighthouse<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just 5 km south of Livadi lies one of the most beautiful and unspoiled spots on Serifos, which is especially worth a visit at sunrise or sunset. Gleaming white, adorned with natural stone elements, and crowned by a green dome, the <strong>Serifos Lighthouse<\/strong> stands at the end of a very dilapidated gravel road.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_34555\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-34555\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-34555\" title=\"Serifos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Leuchtturm Spathi\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Serifos-Sehenswuerdigkeiten-Leuchtturm-Spathi.jpg\" alt=\"Serifos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Leuchtturm Spathi\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-34555\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lighthouse at Cape Spathi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was built in 1901 on a 65-meter-high rocky cliff at <strong>Cape Spathi<\/strong> and has since served as a guide for ships entering the harbor. The small area in front of the lighthouse is perfect for a picnic. By the time we reached the bottom, the dolphins were gone, but the lighthouse was just being freshly whitewashed by master painter Leonidas, and we had a friendly chat with him about our favorite Greek islands. Above the western bay is the island\u2019s landfill, the only downside to this beautiful spot.<\/p>\n<h3>Hike to Alevrakia Beach<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Not far from the lighthouse lies a small but exquisite dream cove with one of the island\u2019s most beautiful beaches. Surrounded by gray rocks, <strong>Alevrakia Beach<\/strong>, with its golden sand meeting the turquoise-blue sea, is a true feast for the eyes. Idyllic atmosphere and friendly owner family.<\/p>\n<h3>Rental Cars for Serifos<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Measuring 10 km wide and 13 km long, Serifos is a <strong>small Cycladic island<\/strong> that you can circle in a short time. A small car or a scooter is sufficient for a self-guided tour of the island. Routes are mostly limited to the Livadi\u2013Chora route.
