One reason for this could be the lack of a ferry port. This is located in the village of Gavrio in the west of the island. You can start your city tour at the Open Andros Theater, where you can park your vehicle in the free parking lots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From here you can reach the traffic-calmed pedestrian zone in a few minutes, which leads to the central square, the Platia Kairis. The view of the Chora from the ruins of the castle is magnificent. The name Micra Anglia (&#8220;Little England&#8221;) refers to the glorious era of the Andriot shipping companies in the 19th and 20th centuries, in which the island&#8217;s shipping traffic flourished from England to America. The luxurious suites of the 5-star hotel reflect the splendour of that time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"androsstadt\">#2 What to see around Andros Town<\/h2>\n<h3>The stalactite cave Foros<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just a 15-minute drive from Andros Chora, in the hamlet of Aladino, lies the <strong>Foros Cave<\/strong>, a small stalactite cave that is the pride of the local population. Especially for cave fans and families with children, the natural wonder is worth a short detour.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From a parking bay above the stone bridge of Aladino, a paved footpath leads about 400 m to the entrance of the stalactite cave. Here you will find a very friendly local guide who will make the tour informative and vivid.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16405\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16405\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16405\" title=\"foros cave andros tropfsteinhoehle\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/foros-cave-andros-tropfsteinhoehle.jpg\" alt=\"foros cave andros tropfsteinhoehle\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bizarre formations in Foros Cave<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The compact cave with its numerous stalagmites, stalactites and colorful limestones measures about 500 square meters and contains eight rooms in which there are bizarre formations to marvel at.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Sturdy shoes and a jacket for frostbite are recommended, as the temperature inside Foros Cave is a constant 16-17 degrees. Due to the low ceilings and low lighting, hard hats and flashlights are provided free of charge.\u00a0(01.07.-15.09.: Mon.-Sat. 11 a.m.-8 p.m., Wed.+Sun. 11 a.m.-3 p.m., out of season from 16.09.-30.06. only on request, admission: 5 \u20ac)<\/p>\n<h3>Bridge hike in the Mesaria Valley<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This Andros hike takes you along two ancient stone bridges and can be started directly at Foros Cave, for example. Follow route 18a down into the valley until you reach a stream after a few kilometres, which is dominated by the picturesque <strong>Stone Bridge \u00bbGefira Aladinou\u00ab<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A small group of geese and ducks splash around here in the cool water. It goes along unspoilt nature, the paths are well marked. There are always magnificent views of Mesaria, the mountain village of Fallika and later also of Chora. On top of the mountain the mighty <strong>Panachrantou Monastery<\/strong> made of dark stone, below are a few snow-white houses and little churches.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After about 45 minutes you will reach the second <strong>stone bridge \u00bbStichiomeni\u00ab<\/strong>. The almost meditative place in the middle of the valley is embedded in lush green vegetation. A perfect place for an extended rest. In the caves along the washed-out riverbed, centuries-old small hermitages are incorporated, which probably serve as goat dwellings today.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16436\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16436\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16436\" title=\"steinbruecke stichiomeni andros wandern\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/steinbruecke-stichiomeni-andros-wandern.jpg\" alt=\"steinbruecke stichiomeni andros wandern\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16436\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Stichiomeni Bridge in the Mesaria Valley<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In summer, the stream reaches about as far as here. The huge oleander bushes below the bridge bloomed in full splendor during our visit. If you still want to continue the hike, continue along routes 1 and 17a towards Chora.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On the other side of the bridge, the trail continues along Route 1 towards Mesaria. The whole tour covers about 6 km, you should make sure you have enough water and sturdy shoes.<\/p>\n<h3>The springs of Menites<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Andros is one of the most water-rich and therefore <strong>greenest islands of the South Aegean<\/strong>. Throughout the year there are water-bearing streams, which are fed by the numerous mountain springs. According to legend, wine once flowed out here, hence the name &#8220;Springs of Dionysus&#8221;, named after the Greek god of wine. In the village itself there are two solid taverns. The unspectacular harbour town, which is located in a sheltered bay, offers a few taverns and caf\u00e9s, supermarkets and car rental companies. It is the most important ancient monument on the island and measures about 20 m in height. Especially in the low season, you will find a quiet swimming spot on this sandy beach. An old lady with her pregnant daughter was then sent to the castle under a pretext for help. During the night, the lady opened the gates to the Ottomans, who killed all the inhabitants. Out of remorse and shame, the old woman jumped into the sea and at the place of today&#8217;s rock she turned to stone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2 id=\"s\u00fcden\">#5 On the road in the south of Andros<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One of the most beautiful panoramic roads leads from Andros town along the southeast coast to Ormos Korthiou. Take a day to explore this magnificent area on Andros.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From Chora, the road first runs to the <strong>sleepy village of Sineti<\/strong>, which is impressively enthroned on the slopes of the Dipotamata Gorge. From the coastal town of Batsi, the road winds through the wild mountain landscape of Andros.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Passing Kato Katokilos, the route leads to the green valley of Remata. Afterwards in several serpentines up to Arni and along the flanks of the highest mountain Kouvara or Profitis Ilias at 997 m.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16402\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16402\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16402\" title=\"andros inseltour ausfluege\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/andros-inseltour-ausfluege.jpg\" alt=\"andros inseltour ausfluege\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16402\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Along the Kouvara mountain plateau<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Behind Arni we can make a detour to the chapel of Profitis Ilias, which is enthroned on a striking rock (see <a href=\"#wandern\">#7 Hiking in Andros<\/a>). The route leads through almost <strong>alpine landscape<\/strong> continue to Vourkoti and then cross the ridge down to Apikia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From here, especially in spring, it is worthwhile to take a short hike (Route 2a) to the <strong>Pithara Waterfalls<\/strong>, which are located in a lush valley. Once you arrive in Stenies, you can refresh yourself on one of the beautiful sandy beaches or continue towards the capital.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_16403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16403\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16403\" title=\"andros stenies dorf\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/andros-stenies-dorf.jpg\" alt=\"andros stenies dorf\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-16403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The pretty summer cottages of Stenies<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Everywhere on the island you will encounter the <strong>Xirolithies<\/strong>: curious dry stone walls into which large vertical slate slabs were incorporated between small stones stacked on top of each other. This construction is typical for Andros and since there was enough slate, the slabs were simply built into the masonry to save stones.
