With just under 300 residents, Chora is today a sleepy village with a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. As a result, Alonissos is now also known as <em>To Nissi ton Germanon<\/em>\u2014the <strong>Island of the Germans<\/strong>. From there, you can reach the maze of alleys via the <em>Panselinos<\/em> tavern (recommended!) across from the playground. Only a few walls remain, some of which have been incorporated into residential buildings. In the evenings, <strong>Chora\u2019s<\/strong> <strong>Kastro<\/strong> is a popular spot to wind down the day in one of the bars or taverns. Be sure to look to the right and left into the cobblestone side streets\u2014it\u2019s amazing how lushly green some of the house entrances are planted! For an evening drink, the Barbarossa Bar is our favorite. Parking is limited on-site, so walking is recommended. This is where every visitor first sets foot on the island. Architecturally, Patitiri isn\u2019t exactly a feast for the eyes; after the 1965 earthquake, buildings were constructed haphazardly here\u2014unfortunately without adhering to traditional island architectural styles.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42978\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42978\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42978\" title=\"Patitiri Alonissos Sporaden Inseln Urlaub\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Patitiri-Alonissos-Sporaden-Inseln-Urlaub.jpg\" alt=\"Patitiri Alonissos Sporaden Inseln Urlaub\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42978\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Patitiri Bay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The name Patitiri means \u201cgrape press,\u201d as this was once the place on Alonissos where all the winemakers brought their grapes to be crushed into wine and later shipped across the country. Fishing boats and tour boats glide along the short promenade, and a dozen taverns and caf\u00e9s (Tip: <em>Patitiri Cafe<\/em>) invite you to linger. Only shopping enthusiasts won\u2019t find much to their liking here. In a compact space, it offers plenty of information about the endangered Mediterranean monk seals. Since 1980, MOm has been working to preserve this seal species on Alonissos and throughout Greece. It is located on the western outskirts of town and houses several exhibitions that provide a comprehensive look at the island\u2019s history. The individual themed sections are also well labeled. East of the harbor lies the <strong>Rousoum Gialos<\/strong> district, where several apartment complexes and 2\u20133-star hotels have sprung up around the pebble beach.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42986\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42986\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42986\" title=\"Rousoum Gialos Alonissos Sporaden\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Rousoum-Gialos-Alonissos-Sporaden.jpg\" alt=\"Rousoum Gialos Alonissos Sporaden\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42986\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rousoum Gialos<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Paralia Rousoum Gialos<\/strong> is a pebble beach and, unfortunately, is cluttered with umbrellas. There are two taverns and a bar on site, though only the <em>Cosmos Caf\u00e9 Bar<\/em> is worth recommending. Personally, we weren\u2019t impressed by the haphazardly developed settlement, and there are far more tranquil spots for swimming on Alonnisos.<\/p>\n<h3>Votsi<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">One bay further east lies <strong>Votsi<\/strong>, which, with its concrete pier, is a popular stop for sailors. The settlement, home to some 600 people today, is quite winding. The sea can only be reached on foot or via a narrow access road. But the view of the bay from above is phenomenal!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42988\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42988\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42988\" title=\"Alonnisos Votsi Sporaden Segler Tipps\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alonnisos-Votsi-Sporaden-Segler-Tipps.jpg\" alt=\"Alonnisos Votsi Sporaden Segler Tipps\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42988\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Votsi is popular with sailors<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The narrow <strong>Votsi Beach<\/strong> is only suitable for swimming to a limited extent. Nevertheless, there are several good small hotels and guesthouses in Votsi. Since there are only a few restaurants, the evenings here are wonderfully peaceful. For a romantic dinner, we recommend the upscale restaurant <em>Dendrolimano<\/em>, where you can sit idyllically under shady pine trees.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42989\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42989\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42989\" title=\"Votsi Beach Alonissos Sporaden\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Votsi-Beach-Alonissos-Sporaden.jpg\" alt=\"Votsi Beach Alonissos Sporaden\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42989\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Votsi Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>#3 Beaches of Alonissos<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You don\u2019t come to Alonissos for a pure beach vacation. Unlike the golden sandy beaches of the Sporades island of Skiathos, the <strong>beaches of Alonissos<\/strong> are, with a few exceptions, covered in gravel or stones. However, there are some beautiful swimming coves that are virtually deserted even in summer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43009\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43009\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43009\" title=\"Alonissos Str\u00e4nde Agios Dimitrios\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alonissos-Straende-Agios-Dimitrios.jpg\" alt=\"Alonissos Str\u00e4nde Agios Dimitrios\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43009\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Swimming fun at Agios Dimitrios Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Most beaches are located on the east side of Alonissos and consist of coarse pebbles. If you follow the main road north from Patitiri, one beach follows another, and you can go beach hopping. Below, we present our favorites.<\/p>\n<h3>Paralia Spartines<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Patitiri, we advise against swimming near the ferry terminal; most people are drawn to Paralia Rousoum Gialos instead. Consequently, the small town beach gets quite crowded in the summer. In contrast, it\u2019s much quieter at <strong>Spartines Beach<\/strong>, located a few hundred meters east of Votsi.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42990\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42990\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42990\" title=\"Spartines Beach Alonissos Sporaden Inseln\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Spartines-Beach-Alonissos-Sporaden-Inseln.jpg\" alt=\"Spartines Beach Alonissos Sporaden Inseln\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42990\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Spartines Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Only a narrow forest path leads down to this unspoiled beach, which consists of coarse, beige-colored pebbles. The beach captivates with its natural beauty: sandstone cliffs rise vertically above the sea, and a pine forest stretches above them. Water shoes are recommended for entering the water. At <strong>Milia Beach,<\/strong> the sea shimmers in beautiful shades of turquoise, and the entire bay is framed by a lush pine forest. The shoreline is covered in light-colored pebbles, which can make entering the water a bit tricky.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42992\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42992\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42992\" title=\"Milia Beach Alonissos Baden Urlaub\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Milia-Beach-Alonissos-Baden-Urlaub.jpg\" alt=\"Milia Beach Alonissos Baden Urlaub\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42992\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Milia Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two simple beach bars rent out sun loungers and serve refreshments. Parking is available directly behind the beach. For people with limited mobility, a Seatrac is even available.<\/p>\n<h3>Chrisi Milia Beach<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Without a doubt, <strong>Chrisi Milia Beach<\/strong> is the most popular beach on the island. The reason: a gentle slope into the water and plenty of fine golden-brown sand, similar to that found on Skiathos. Although it\u2019s just one bay further north, you can\u2019t drive there directly from Milia Beach. You\u2019ll have to head back to the main road and take a 5-kilometer detour.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42993\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42993\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42993\" title=\"Chrisi Milia Beach Alonissos Sporaden\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Chrisi-Milia-Beach-Alonissos-Sporaden.jpg\" alt=\"Chrisi Milia Beach Alonissos Sporaden\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42993\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chrisi Milia Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">When we were there in early June, Chrisi Milia Beach was still pretty laid-back during the week. On the weekend, however, it got noticeably busier, as many Greek families with children come here. The local <em>Chrisi Milia Bar<\/em> rents out sun loungers (starting at \u20ac15) and serves cool drinks and hearty food.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42994\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42994\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42994\" title=\"Alonissos Str\u00e4nde Chrisi Milia\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alonissos-Straende-Chrisi-Milia.jpg\" alt=\"Alonissos Str\u00e4nde Chrisi Milia\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42994\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View from the Chrisi Milia Bar<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The stretch of pure sand is just under 100 m long, but a sandbar extends a good 50 m into the sea, so the water doesn\u2019t get deeper than knee-deep for quite a distance. It\u2019s a dream for kids, but as an adult, you first have to wade through the shallow water to swim a few laps. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<h3>Kokkinokastro Beach<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From Chrisi Milia, you could already see the reddish islet of Kokkinonisi, which belongs to the Kokkinokastro coastline. Parking is available at several spots located about 100 meters above the beach. A stone staircase leads down to <strong>Kokkinokastro Beach<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43084\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43084\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-43084 size-full\" title=\"Alonissos Kokkinokastro Beach Kokkoninisi\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/Alonissos-Kokkinokastro-Beach-Kokkinonisi.jpg\" alt=\"Alonissos Kokkinokastro Beach Kokkinonisi\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43084\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kokkinonisi: Red Island in the Blue Sea<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Once you reach the bottom, you\u2019ll be greeted by a bizarre landscape. Rust-colored sandstone cliffs rise out of the sea and lead to a small, unfortunately <strong>inaccessible peninsula called Kokkinokastro<\/strong>, where a few pine trees grow. Definitely one of the most impressive beaches on the island! The local beach bar rents out lounge chairs and plays music. If you prefer a quieter spot, head to the western section.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42996\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42996\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42996\" title=\"Kokkinokastro Beach Alonissos Sporaden\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Kokkinokastro-Beach-Alonissos-Sporaden.jpg\" alt=\"Kokkinokastro Beach Alonissos Sporaden\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42996\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kokkinokastro Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In ancient times, there was a settlement or a fortified castle on the peninsula, as the name Kokkinokastro (kokkino = red, kastro = castle) suggests. Only sparse remains of the walls are left, visible only from the sea. Underwater near the island of Kokkinonisi, archaeologists have also discovered ancient ruins and artifacts from a bygone era.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_42998\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42998\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42998\" title=\"Kokkinokastro Beach Alonissos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Kokkinokastro-Beach-Alonissos-Sehenswuerdigkeiten.jpg\" alt=\"Kokkinokastro Beach Alonissos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-42998\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View from the sea<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Leftos Gialos Beach<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Leftos Gialos Beach<\/strong> is located four kilometers north of Kokkinokastro and can be reached via a narrow and somewhat bumpy asphalt road. The drive takes you through a pine forest, and time and again, magnificent views of picturesque bays such as Tzortzi Gialos open up.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43064\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43064\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43064\" title=\"Alonissos Geheimtipps Tzortzi Gialos Bucht\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alonissos-Geheimtipps-Tzortzi-Gialos-Bucht.jpg\" alt=\"Alonissos Geheimtipps Tzortzi Gialos Bucht\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43064\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tzortzi Gialos Bay<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Unfortunately, the two beach restaurants at Leftos Gialos have taken over the entire beach. Only the edges of the beach remain somewhat untouched. If that doesn\u2019t bother you, you\u2019ll find a great spot here for a day at the beach.<\/p>\n<h2>#4 Fishing Village of Steni Vala<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">About eight kilometers from Leftos Gialos lies one of our personal favorite spots on Alonissos: <strong>Steni Vala<\/strong>. It\u2019s worth stopping by one of the local taverns (recommendations: <em>Tassia\u2019s Cooking<\/em> and <em>To Fanari<\/em>) for lunch or dinner. Even as you approach, your gaze is drawn to the small, charming settlement right by the sea.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43001\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43001\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43001\" title=\"Steni Vala Alonissos Sporaden\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Steni-Vala-Alonissos-Sporaden.jpg\" alt=\"Steni Vala Alonissos Sporaden\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43001\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Welcome to Steni Vala<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Barely more than a handful of families live in the hamlet year-round. The former <strong>fishing village of Alonissos<\/strong> has become a major attraction on the island. It doesn\u2019t take much: a picturesque row of houses, a fjord-like, wind-sheltered bay, and a good dose of tranquility.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43003\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43003\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43003\" title=\"Alonissos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Steni Vala\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alonissos-Sehenswuerdigkeiten-Steni-Vala.jpg\" alt=\"Alonissos Sehensw\u00fcrdigkeiten Steni Vala\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43003\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Steni Vala Waterfront<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Even if it seems a bit odd at first glance, virtually all the buildings along the pier house restaurants and caf\u00e9s. The local businesses thrive on the tourist trade, and the prices are all fair. As you stroll along the traffic-calmed waterfront promenade, you\u2019ll be spoiled for choice: along the 150-meter boulevard, there are no fewer than five taverns and two caf\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43002\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43002\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43002\" title=\"Steni Vala Tassia Cooking Restaurants Alonissos\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Steni-Vala-Tassia-Cooking-Restaurants-Alonissos.jpg\" alt=\"Steni Vala Tassia Cooking Restaurants Alonissos\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43002\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A cozy seaside tavern<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fishing boats and yachts bob merrily at the pier, and depending on the time of day, local fishermen, divers, or international sailors stop by the local spots. We especially liked the Mavrikis family\u2019s <em>Icarus Caf\u00e9<\/em>. Here, you\u2019ll quickly strike up a conversation with other vacationers and can leave your everyday life behind over a cool drink\u2014guaranteed!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43005\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43005\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43005\" title=\"Icarus Cafe Steni Vala Alonissos Tipps\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Icarus-Cafe-Steni-Vala-Alonissos-Tipps.jpg\" alt=\"Icarus Cafe Steni Vala Alonissos Tipps\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43005\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A break at the Caf\u00e9<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite the many visitors, especially on weekends, the atmosphere in town remains completely relaxed. Both Greeks and international fans of Greece appreciate this. The vibe is especially cozy in the evening: the bars and restaurants are well-attended but not overcrowded. Sailors anchor in the bay, and children play peacefully at the pier. No cars or mopeds disturb the idyll.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">We were lucky that our accommodation, <a href=\"#kalypso\">Casa Kalypso<\/a>, was located just outside Steni Vala. On our way home every evening, we were accompanied by the sound of the sea and the chirping of crickets. The nights are dead quiet, which is a rarity for Greece. Steni Vala, you are now one of our favorite places!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43007\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43007\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43007\" title=\"Alonissos Hotels am Meer Steni Vala\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Alonissos-Hotels-am-Meer-Steni-Vala.jpg\" alt=\"Alonissos Hotels am Meer Steni Vala\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43007\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Casa Kalypso near Steni Vala<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h3>Swim break at Paralia Glifa<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The pebble beach is just a five-minute walk from Steni Vala and is mainly visited by guests from the nearby apartment complexes. Just head over the hill past the village church, and you can cool off in the refreshing water. If you walk north along the shore from <strong>Paralia Glifa<\/strong>, you\u2019ll come to the <em>SUELTO Beach Bar<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43006\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43006\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43006\" title=\"Glifa Beach Alonissos Steni Vala\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Glifa-Beach-Alonissos-Steni-Vala.jpg\" alt=\"Glifa Beach Alonissos Steni Vala\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43006\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Glifa Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can relax and unwind in hammocks under shady olive trees with a view of the uninhabited <strong>neighboring island of Peristera<\/strong>. Cool drinks and snacks are available at fair prices. Fishing boats bob in the harbor, and a small chapel stands at the entrance. We thought it would be similarly traditional there\u2014we were wrong! In short: Three fishing families with no experience in the restaurant business offer simple dishes (some of them frozen) at high prices to earn some extra money in the summer.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_43008\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-43008\" style=\"width: 800px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-43008\" title=\"Kalamakia Alonissos Sporaden Tipps\" src=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Kalamakia-Alonissos-Sporaden-Tipps.jpg\" alt=\"Kalamakia Alonissos Sporaden Tipps\" width=\"800\" height=\"534\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-43008\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The only bright spot in Kalamakia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dirk Sch\u00f6nrock, author of the <strong>Sporades travel guide<\/strong> published by Michael M\u00fcller Verlag, had already described it this way in his book. Since then, the reservoir has stood idle in the landscape as a monument to mismanagement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Many songbirds, as well as ravens, seagulls, and falcons, now use the reservoir as a resting place. A magnificent mixed forest grows all around, and absolute silence reigns. You can drive or walk all the way around the reservoir. However, the drive north along the asphalted mountain road\u2014pockmarked with numerous potholes\u2014is a highlight in itself, as panoramic views of vast stretches of the Marine National Park open up time and again. Director Theodossopoulos was fanatically determined to capture this rare seal species on camera.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The conditions were extreme: Due to the inaccessibility of the coast, the filmmakers had to resort to tiny boats and sometimes camp near the beach or in sea caves for days on end. The film, originally titled <em>&#8220;The Mediterranean Monk Seal \u2013 A Monk in Trouble&#8221;<\/em>, premiered at international film festivals in the summer of 1976.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The elaborate wildlife documentary was also broadcast on television shortly thereafter on the BBC and ARD. It was a success and led to significant public awareness of the endangered species and the island of Alonissos. Activists, politicians, and scientists were thereby encouraged to establish a marine protected area.<\/p>\n<h3>Visiting the Sporades Marine National Park<\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">You can explore the Alonissos Marine National Park in various ways, such as snorkeling, kayaking, or taking boat trips. However, this is only permitted in clearly marked zones. In Zone B around Alonissos and Peristera, sailors can dock and explore the secluded bays.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Registration is required for Zone A, as it is strictly protected. No landing, free diving, or snorkeling is permitted here, with the exception of Kyra Panagia. The <strong>island of Piperi<\/strong> is considered a core zone and is completely off-limits, as it is the main breeding ground for the rare Mediterranean monk seal. You can find tour operators at the port of Patitiri. You can either approach them directly at the boat or visit one of the travel agencies right at the port.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The excursions to the Alonissos Marine National Park start around 10 a.m. and then head toward the strait between Peristera and Alonissos. Depending on the tour\u2019s itinerary, stops are made at Kokkinokastro Beach, in Kalamakia, or at Agios Dimitrios. On this wild island with its dramatic cliffs stands a monastery belonging to the Monastic Republic of <a href=\"https:\/\/greece-moments.com\/en\/athos-halkidiki\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mount Athos<\/a>. It has undergone extensive renovations in recent years and can be visited as part of the tour. There are fewer than 70 seals in the entire Alonissos Marine National Park. It is much more likely to encounter <strong>dolphins around Alonissos<\/strong>, which are abundant in the waters. This is not recommended with a toddler, as there are hardly any swimming spots with direct access to land. Maintain a minimum distance of 50 meters\u2014even in the water. Don\u2019t make loud noises and don\u2019t try to lure the monk seal. There have already been rough encounters, as the animals can bite hard when they feel threatened. Observe the Mediterranean monk seal calmly and quietly and enjoy the moment. The landscape is varied, there are plenty of trees providing shade, and you\u2019ll be treated to fantastic views of the sea time and again. We also explored the island a bit on foot. It begins shortly after the public parking lot in Chora (near the cemetery) at the turnoff to the Sunset Viewpoint.
